  1. I would go. There is no harm in meeting with people in your field. Who knows, maybe you'll love the school and bring it into consideration.
  2. So who got the email from Virginia? What is a POC?
  3. If I were a professor, there is no way I sign off on working with a student if I hadn't had at least a phone conversation. I know that UNC professors do very informal phone interviews. Other then that, I think the silence is pretty normal. At least I hope it is.
  4. I think the quant. score can only help or hurt if you're at the far end of the spectrum. If you get less than a 400 or more than 750ish, it'll probably raise some eyebrows. If you're in the middle, no worries.
  5. I'd like to know which particular segment of the 19th century you are studying, just to know whether or not I should give up hope on UNC. Thank you friend.
  6. saw on the results page that one the schools has already started contacting people :( Angry

  7. No, he said he's doing United States history. Disappointed I haven't gotten an email, but congrats to you two fellows.
  8. I found out via the "check app status" page and confirmed by emailing the DGS.
  9. I'm disappointed that nobody wants to play along. What else are we going to do until the letters/emails start coming in? Oh yeah, jobs or that undergrad thing that many of us still need to finish.
  10. Hello, I am new here but have been trolling for a whiles. I was not born in USA, but spent most of my life here and love American history, especially the Civil War. This is my proposition: we all fill out one more application, to the grad cafe university. List whatever info you want (I know privacy is super important for everybody, including me), the positives and negatives. Here are my basics: Positives: 3.92 GPA from good public university, 670 V, 800 Q GRE score, double majored with good humanities background, research experience in history, two very good LORs, excellent SOP with a good fit at all my universities. Negatives One possibly lukewarm LOR, 5 AW on GRE, no senior thesis, good/ok but not spectacular writing sample.
  11. I might end up in tuscaloosa, so I'd like to learn more about the city as well.
  12. I would retake. Spend a ton of time studying your high school maths, and learning more vocab. Good luck!
  13. I wouldn't call it lying, but one of the professors with whom I want to work has a completely different type of historiography than I have ever before experienced . I said on the SOP that I'm really interested in it, when I actually have no idea. He's a really prominent professor and I'd like to try his "system" because it sounds really neat, so I'm not lying, just bending the truth a little. Now, if you want to study medieval history and apply as an Americanist because you don't have the Latin background to get in but plan on switching later, I say shame on you.
