  1. I've also asked about a Facebook group but no one has made one yet. In terms of a thesis, I am also interested in doing one, but I've heard that it's difficult to get approval through the FSW. Not many professors want to oversee a student taking on a thesis, so try to strengthen your ideas and really show your passion. Hopefully you can do one!
  2. A professor once told me: "normal people don't go into social work. Normal people don't feel drawn to a life of so much giving." Go with your gut, you're facing this choice and challenge for a reason :).
  3. Has anyone made a Laurier MSW Advanced Standing Facebook group yet? I've seen that the 2-yr full time cohort has been made... I'm really excited to meet the rest of my future classmates!
  4. Not a part of this conversation but I finished my BSW at Waterloo this passing summer. It was one of the best things I'd done to advance my SW career. It was intense, I worked part time on top of the full time courseload and practicum. I highly recommend the Indigenous Perspectives elective. My other piece of advice is to be firm about what placement you want and what you want from your practicum experience. Practicums were competitive for Micro experiences and some students felt that they were placed in certain agencies out of convenience to the school-ie Renison has great relationships with some local agencies. Feel free to connect with me any time about the program.
  5. Any Laurier acceptances received their letters in the mail yet? Last year when i was rejected, I got the letter the same day that Loris updated. I'm being irrational and wondering if it's an email glitch and I've not been accepted at all haha.
  6. Hey! I applied in January but had been writing my statement since October. I think every 2 years they open the part time streams.
  7. For anyone who was accepted/rejected to Laurier, how did it happen? Was Loris updated, e-mail received, and then a letter? If anyone applied last year, there was a system glitch before the information was officially released, so I was able to view my rejection almost 2 weeks before the letter went out. I can't remember if I got an e-mail or anything else though.
  8. Not sure about Laurier's funding, but I don't think they have a lot. York, however, was advertised quite widely in our BSW program as "the school with a lot of funding." If I could afford to live in Toronto, I'd choose York because of the anti-oppressive framework.
  9. Someone I know is currently in that program and absolutely loving it! There's also quite a bit of funding available for students.
  10. Definitely not because you were accepted into another program! It's great that you have another plan now. I knew many people who had all the right experience who were waitlisted or rejected due to the sheer number of applicants. Sorry this is not the news we hoped for you What was the other program you were accepted in though? I'm going over my plan B as well.
  11. Breath, and try to get your mind off of it for a while :). Laurier will update the "Applicant Summary" portion of your loris account homepage first, to show whether you've been accepted or not. If they are still showing your references, it means that no decision has been made yet.
  12. Whatever people say, Windsor is a beautiful city and there's a nice bike/jogging path beside the river!
  13. If anyone else is waiting for Laurier's Part Time MSW, I just received word that the decisions will be made by the 3rd week of April!
  14. Congrats on Windsor! May I ask what your opinion of the school is? And what draws you there? Windsor was my local University growing up, but I never toured the campus and immediately went to Waterloo for my undergrad. What is the scoop on their MSW?
  15. Me too! I am going to e-mail them today about the p/t program. I ended up with around 3400 hours as well, all a mix of macro community development work, settlement, and volunteering at a homeless shelter. I've known people who get into the 2 year with extremely narrow experiences and few hours, but I know the 2 year is different than advanced standing. Anyone have plans for what happens if you aren't accepted? I'm thinking about going abroad, or looking into other humanities MA programs.
  16. I feel you! I've only applied to Laurier's Part Time Advanced Standing, and decisions aren't made until June 30. It's driving me nuts. Does anyone know about the free university tuition or grants applying to graduate programs?
  17. Anyone else here applying to a part-time MSW? Specifically Laurier? I haven't heard much around the part-time stream and would love to connect with other part-timers!
  18. I'm so sorry to hear that :(. I was right there with you last year, and while everyone was running around with their acceptances, I was waiting for that final letter in the mail to tell me that I didn't make it. You've done a smart thing by applying to other schools though, and you may have a better experience at one of the other schools instead.
  19. She texted me to say that she received an e-mail. When I was rejected last year (boo!) the online status was updated before the letter went out.
  20. A friend of mine just received her 1 year advanced standing acceptance from Laurier... it's starting!
  21. Since we are sharing experience... I'll share a bit about myself. Volunteered at a homeless community drop in centre for 1 year- roughly 500 hours. 1000 hours from my practicum at a community development agency. Currently working full time at an immigration agency, plus running programs for refugee and Immigrant high school youth. My total hours on the application are less than what Laurier recommends but I wanted to try again anyways! My plans (if not accepted) are to teach abroad for a while, or continue my current position and study Arabic to hopefully pursue more immigration careers. Good luck to everyone else currently waiting it out, and congrats to those already accepted!
