Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2016 admissions
LP3 replied to MSW&MD's topic in Social Workers Forum
Has anyone applied to Laurier's part-time, Advanced Standing stream? The decisions are said to come out by June 30th at the latest. When could I expect that they would start making admissions decisions though? -

Hi everyone! I hope everyone's applications are going well. It is a much quieter thread this year. In response to the post about Laurier's Community Psychology program, I worked with someone who was in the program for part of last year. She was collecting data and participating in some major community development projects. It seemed like a fun but engaging program where you had the freedom to research different things pertaining to your community interests. Has anyone considered any other programs too? Laurier has the MA Theology and Psychotherapy program. There's also the MA Ed in Counselling... MA Cultural Studies... Social Justice and Community Engagement (Laurier Brantford). There are so many options for further education but it seems that the MSW is one of the highest regarded degrees. -

To those who have or are currently working in the field... How bad does it look to leave a position before your contract is up? How about disclosing that i want to return to school for my msw? The job I have been in really doesn't feel like a great fit and I want to get different experience before applying to my MSW. I have approximately 3 years of experience working in community development, 5ish months with immigration issues, but I want to volunteer at different agencies to get a better idea of what I want to specialize in. At this time, I am planning on u of t one year social justice stream, and u Windsor one year mental health/ clinical stream. -

Hi everyone! Laurier rejectee from last year's cycle. All is not bleak as I was offered a 1 year contract with an immigration agency after graduation this summer. I am unsure of applying to u of t for my advanced standing MSW as 1) I want to do it someday and 2) I fear hitting a glass ceiling with only my bsw. I feel a little stuck though, as my position has a high turnover rate so it is likely that the contract will be renewed in the summer. The wage is far from amazing and I lack any sort of health or dental benefits. I have lots of thinking to do... Good luck everyone! -

Thanks for your help! I've been sifting through the FSW site for a while and was unsuccessful. I knew this forum would help me out! -

Congrats to everyone who has gotten in!!! I am wondering if anyone can tell me about U of T's MSW. I found info online about the streams of study, but can't find anything about fees or program structuring. What does the part-time MSW look like, and has anyone done it here? When is the next application deadline for it? Thanks in advance!! -

So I got the small letter in the mail today from Laurier. It's official, I am rejected!!! I am interested in the social justice and diversity stream at U of T though now that I have learned about it. I'm more leaning towards immigration and settlement work, and might look into that for a future option -

Do you think they could be changing mine from rejected to accepted?! LOL this is stressful!!! Laurier is taking us on a roller coaster of an adventure. I want to call them and ask: WHAT DO YOU MEAN???? -

I'm wondering if the page has a glitch? Laurier had a lot of problems back in the very beginning with applications and their online database. I can no longer access the page that says I was rejected and I get an error message. Maybe there is still hope? I still haven't received the official rejection e-mail so who knows! Stay positive! -

Weird... Now when I try to access the "rejection" page it brings me to an error page with a bunch of coding on it. I'm still quite certain that I got rejected lol. -

For my page, I had two blue texts saying "Program, Master of Social Work.... etc." If I clicked the bottom one, it brought me to my references. If I clicked the top one, that's where it took me to the admissions decision page. There was a small blurb about how the Faculty of Social Work accepts so few candidates every year, thanks for my application, but I was unsuccessful. I'm kind of numb right now. I wasn't sure I was ready for my MSW from the very start, but I thought I might be able to have a choice to accept or defer an offer. It feels like a door has been slammed shut, and even though I have a plan for the next year to work... I feel disappointed too. -

Congrats to everyone who got into U of T! That is so exciting!!! Still awaiting Laurier... This year has been so financially tough that I am going to celebrate if I get in and if I don't! LOL. My placement agency is going to try to hire me on in September if I don't have any success with grad school. How is everyone else coping with this? I keep refreshing my e-mail account, every two seconds! -

Smpalesh: I forget about it for a few days and then I remember it's this month and want to jump up and down and climb up the walls and stuff. I don't know what I am hoping for! Just knowing, I guess! Good luck to you as well! And to everyone else! We all have a variety of experiences so I feel like we all have a good chance! -

When do Laurier's Advanced Standing results come out? Middle/end of Feb? I'm really anxious... Part of me still doesn't feel ready for Grad school but another part of me is super excited to just know. -

Ah!! I don't know what to think about it. Some days I'm convinced I won't get in, but other days I'm like, hey there's a slim chance! Part of me knows I can't be too hopeful because it's Laurier. -

Yay! It's so awesome to see everyone else applying and getting all excited. Surprisingly, the time is flying by and I feel sort of indifferent as to whether or not I get in (Laurier's advance standing is too competitive to get very excited about!) but I am planning some backup options for if I am rejected. It's Winter break for the BSW program right now (at UWaterloo) and I'm feeling exhausted and burnt out from everything Social Work. It feels like some of these programs are structured to make you question your very purpose in life before you are allowed to commit to a career path! -

Laurier friends: How do I check the online status of my application? Loris will only show me my application and reference statuses, and OUAC brings me to a summary page. Nothing really indicates the status. Am I looking in the wrong place? -

smpalesh, I'm so glad you made the deadline! I'd been procrastinating on this thread following your struggle but didn't get a chance to apply! One of my references has completed the form, but the other two have not started still. I heard that Laurier has had a glitch with their system, and so I went a couple days without any sort of confirmation from applying! Now, I've received two sets of notification e-mails, and my Loris account shows 2 MSW applications that are active, with my referees listed under only 1. I'll give it a couple more days, and then e-mail the registrar to ask what's up. Anyone else seeing a similar thing? -

Has anyone else found themselves in an awkward/stressful situation where their referees have given you their word about the application, but have stopped responding to e-mails? My application is showing up on the LORIS application site for Laurier, and I see all 3 references are "not started-pending" and expiring in 2 weeks! What happens if my referees forget or simply don't do it in time for the deadline? -

So, I was staring at my opened OUAC application this morning and decided to finish it up and submit it anyways. I know I must sound like a crazy person for being so indecisive! But it's submitted! I will drop off the hard copies of my application materials sometime this week at the School of Social Work, and then hopefully not think about it too much until admission letters start being sent out. It feels like a shot in the dirt, but at least I will have experience knowing how to apply and what the wait feels like. -

Thank you for the advice about York I had heard that they offer some great funding packages for their program. I am still going to hold off on applying. Even if I were to get a tuition compensation or scholarship, I couldn't afford to move to Toronto for the year and manage transportation and housing costs. -

Hi everyone! I have come to the decision that I won't be applying this year. I feel like I do need that year (or two) off to get a handle on my student loans. They will be approximately 32000 by the end of this year. I didn't consider how hard it is to study with this kind of debt looming over your head, especially in a professional program where I can't work as often as I need to to live comfortably. My plan is to work and volunteer and then apply for Laurier's p/t advanced standing for 2016. Does anyone have experience with keeping in touch with professors/practicum instructors from their undergrad to approach later for references? I will be contacting mine this week and letting them know about my decision. I will continue to follow this forum to cheer everyone on! I find I get connected to everyone's stories and get just as excited to see who gets in.
