The # of faculty has very little to do with it. The primary reason is clinical placement availability. Some programs are now outsourcing beyond the university clinic and placing students with private practices for both intern- and externships, enabling them to accept more students into their program. Universities that only place students in university clinics have limited space and can only accommodate very few students.

bindlestiff got a reaction from slpPLS in Fall 2015 Applicants!
As Chandru said, people who apply to one school have intelligent and practical reasons for doing so.   And what is the hurt in asking about funding? I think it's a great question, and I can see several reasons why someone might have information to share in response - like having discussed funding with someone who has served on an admissions committee.    In this case I don't think you have any reason to have said something about these posts. But just in general, even if you are genuinely perplexed by something someone says, that doesn't mean you aren't being rude. It all depends on how you phrase what you say. It might be helpful for you to think, "How would I react if someone said this to me?" before you say something.      (@Chandru1 sorry for the downvote, I was aiming for the green but I guess I missed! :/ )

bindlestiff reacted to tripax in best US cities without a car
I've spent a good deal of time in Ames, Iowa (Iowa State), Lincoln, Nebraska, and Syracuse, New York, and of the three, Ames is the easiest to get around without a car while Syracuse is the hardest. The reasons are: Midwest towns are flatter, so bikes work; smaller towns are easier to walk around in, its only four miles from corner to corner of town; snow removal is better where everyone has a truck and does there own neighborhood rather than wait for the city to get to it; College towns like Ames have free busing for students; and all bus routes lead to campus/are geared towards students needs. The reasons go on, and this holds for people I know in places like Lawrence, KS, Urbana-Champaign, IL, Manhattan, KS (Kansas State), etc.

On the other hand, like another poster said, bigger midwest cities like Omaha and Kansas City have large suburban populations that don't care about public transportation. But even in a town with really mediocre busses, like Omaha, you can find places near the universities, Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha, where most everything is within walking distance (but the groceries are expensive in those areas).

I agree, but I don't perceive what I had to say as "rude!" Forward maybe, yes. I'm sorry I offended, but I think some people are overreacting a bit.

That makes sense. Again, my many "whys" were simply my own anxieties over someone's choice to apply to one school. I see this as being empathetic, not rude! I want everyone to get in, and I believe everyone should! I personally think it's a shame that there is such a need for qualified SLPs, an abundance of eager students, yet there are so many rejections each year. Neuronparty, I'm done with your ability to only read me one way which is the wrong way!

I'm confused as to how you think Lippi-Green's positions agree with you more than me. This whole discussion and dehumanizing me as rude and incapable of being a good clinician because of the way I construct (AND EDIT) my sentences is a prime example of linguistic authority and language-based oppression!

I don't know if you do actually need a clinical master's first.  One of the professors at my school doesn't have her CCCs and (obviously) has never been a practicing clinician.  However, I don't really think this is a good thing.  It's important to have your CCCs if you're going to be teaching others how to be clinicians.

I do want to add that I, personally, am glad that graduate schools don't accept many applicants for two reasons:
    1. Applicants that are accepted are the cream of the crop.  If everyone could get accepted into a graduate program, you'd probably end up with a lot of mediocrity.  Example: Teaching.  I hate to bash on teachers (I was one myself, and I know about the hard work they do) but just about anyone can get accepted into a teaching program.  The result?  You end up with a lot of great teachers, but a lot of sub-par teachers too.

    2. Job availability.  Again, coming from teaching, it is SO DIFFICULT to get a teaching job because there are a ton of applicants out there!  In addition, schools don't have to pay their teachers good salaries because of supply and demand.  I've been paying a lot of attention to job websites (like Indeed) and it seems there are always SLP jobs available.  It will be so nice to be able to pick from an array of jobs once I graduate, rather than just taking whatever I can get.

I don't have a problem with post-bacc programs, because I was a post-bacc student myself and found it difficult to find a program near me.  However, I DO feel like schools need to be up front with students about the difficulty about getting into graduate school, so that students don't feel blindsided if they are unable to get in.  Just my two cents.

As I said before, nontraditional students may not have the luxury of packing up and moving. If I had kids or a full time job, I would have to apply to schools within commuting distance, and unless you're in a major metro area, there are not that many.

I hope you will not use the Nordic excuse on your clients.

I have been around people from other cultures - I am from one myself. People from L2 backgrounds must be more cognizant of how they talk and are perceived by others. Given that we are going into a career path in which we must teach effective communication, it is something that is very important. And I would not expect employers to accept your excuse (as that is what it is) for lack of tact - and research corroborates this (see Lippi-Green for some examples - the teacher in me wants you to look them up yourself!)

As your posts have been significantly edited (and among other reasons), I have begun to suspect that you are a troll. So I am out. Have a good night, and best of luck on applications, if you have actually submitted any.

I would also like to know more about funding, but unfortunately I think universities lack transparency on this issue.
My question "Why would anyone know this?" is the teacher in me encouraging people to think for themselves.
