Got my rejection from MIT today. Though I am secretly little sad, I am happy the burden of rejecting snowy MIT was taken away from me. Going to stick to bay area anyways for family reasons, so the rejection doesn't impact plans much. Congrats to those who got in!

I am an international student, and was contacted by POI over email.

Anyone else apply to CalTech's C+MS Program?
phdreally replied to pascal_barbots_wager's topic in Computer Science
@Loser777 - were you interviewed ? -
From the letter: "Because many other applicants are hoping for the place reserved for you, I urge you to respond as soon as possible (no later than April 15)." Looks like there may be some kind of a wait list after all..

I received the official acceptance mail from SEAS today. However website still says "submitted".
-
@superdominator - yeah, it can be tight for bay area expenses.

Application status changed to "Accepted" today (finally). Was notified through an automated email from the university.

MS in Computational sciences Harvard vs Stanford
phdreally replied to abhishek_93's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Stanford gives you much better opportunities being in Silicon Valley. Also, Stanford is in general better than Harvard for grad level computer sciences (primarily because of the size of the program and location, than quality of faculty.) -
There is another thread where some people who were invited to interviews has posted. If you haven't been invited thus far, chances are you are rejected.

I have only heard from POI, no official email yet. I was told official email would come this week, but looks like the week has ended with no official mail.
-
I applied to CS, and my POI emailed me last Friday, indicating that I have been recommended for admission to GSAS and that I should be receiving official email from GSAS next week (i.e, this week, which is almost over!) Not really waiting anxiously as I am very likely going to attend elsewhere.

I haven't heard anything. Some were called for interview, so I'm probably rejected. -
I am 32, applying to fall 2015

@thr0waway - can you provide some more specifics about how the department doesn't care about students? I understand the "risk" with rotation program (the risk you describe is with the rotation strategy itself, less about the department I feel). Other than the risk, any details on possible "red flags" most appreciated.

FYI - I got an email today with the details

Once you have a confirmed admit and are sure of joining grad school and quitting work, I would suggest letting your manager unofficially know of the possibility of you leaving few months down. Your official resignation can come in the last month. Quitting for higher ed is considered a lot less negative (sometimes even positive) than quitting for another job. From my experience this upfront honesty goes a long way in maintaining relationships. You never know - you may realize grad school is just not your thing soon after joining, or infeasible financially, and may want to get back.. Do your best to maintain those bridges. Good luck.

See you folks on visit day!

I haven't. Waiting as well.

Palo alto might be a bit more glitzy and expensive, but the Stanford stipend is 25% higher than berkeley as well (~2400 vs ~3000 per month). It also appears that lot more graduate families use the housing at Stanford than at Berkeley, so a bigger/better community, especially for a growing child (more friends and play mates etc). Stanford housing is in campus, Berkeley housing is a couple miles away. I am feeling Stanford is a better option. Am I missing some major point? (Schools?)

Hi, I wish to get some advice from people familiar with the areas/current students. I have admits in both Stanford and Berkeley. There are profs in both universities with who I would love to work. Given these as equal, I would like some feedback on which is a better place for a family situation. We have a newborn who would be a toddler by Fall 2015. All perspectives welcome!

@DMX - another important consideration is fellow students. You are much more likely to find better quality students (especially with a focus on machine learning) at CMU. You will be spending a lot more of your day to day time with the students, and therefore in that aspect, higher ranked universities are better.

Congrats to those who got in.. See you on visit day!
