  1. Good catch! I applied to Biomedical, so that was relevant to me. My application page didn't say anything different, either (the eponymous 'under review'). I will say UDub sent out their first round of rejections, and I got one of those, but didn't get one from UCSD. #keepingthedreamalive
  2. They've sent interviews and a large round of rejections. I assumed I was rejected because I didn't get an interview, but I didn't get a rejection today, either. Taking this to be a 'good, but not good enough' type of thing.
  3. NIH reporter is your friend here. You can investigate a department and specific PIs before/after interviews. Also, the program should tell you about their funding, so that's not something I'd be asking a PI. You're applying to grad school to research. Talk about research.
  4. That was an average semester at my program...we were all very sad very often.
  5. I have no idea about this, actually. Most biomedical programs still do/prefer in person. I'd do the Skype interview because you literally lose nothing if you do this.
  6. Emailed WashU concerning their pathology program, which had a Dec 1 deadline. They're finishing this week and letting students know about interviews by the end of the week. This might be similar for microbio, which also had the same deadline.
  7. Not going to Utah for an interview, but I've hiked there and it is an amazingly beautiful state! Seriously considered applying just for the possibility of going back for an interview, but there was only one lab that would've really worked for me in the program.
  8. I've never lived in a world where Orgo II wasn't mandatory. It all really depends on how you do in Orgo I. If it's a struggle for you, don't take Orgo II but do take other difficult, relevant science classes that you have the potential to excel in.
  9. Their pathology/molecular medicine program (M3D) had the same deadline, and I haven't heard from them either. It seems that UDub is good with sending acceptances/rejections concurrently, though.
  10. I literally just asked this question and then got a call from them for an interview.
  11. Has anyone heard from U Colorado (Denver) molecular biology?
  12. I'm a little stunned that so many people are applying to 10+ schools. If you apply to 10 schools and get invited for all of their interview weekends, you'll have to cancel, but then again, you got 10 interviews, so chances of getting in are a lot higher. I know my university told us to apply to 4-8 schools and to be realistic about our choice of programs.
  13. Ooooo Yale and UCLA are starting to send today. Anyone want to claim those interviews?
  14. I took time between undergrad & (hopefully next fall) grad school. I've seen mixed results from friends who went straight into grad school. Some have done fine, but there were some who would've benefitted from several years out of school. IMO, maturity seems to matter a lot in dealing with pressures and setbacks.
  15. U Arizona biomedical sciences offered me an interview!
  16. My friend who goes to Penn confirmed that this is true, btw, at least in that school.
  17. You have to send the 2nd one. It looks bad to have a section (even the BS essay section) under 50%.
  18. Undergrad Institution: Research university Major(s): Bio Minor(s): chem, english GPA in Major: 3.4 Overall GPA: 3.24 Position in Class: didn't rank it Type of Student: domestic GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q:158 V:165 W:4.0 B:nope Research Experience: 3.5 years as a tech in academic medicine, papers and posters to show for it (1 pending 1st author) Awards/Honors/Recognitions: several HHMI scholarships, a summer REU, local and school scholarships Pertinent Activities or Jobs: lab tech Special Bonus Points: Who knows, really. Got some definite strengths and one glaring weakness. Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: 1st gen college, mentioned in diversity statements when/where appropriate. Applying to Where: UDub UCSD UCSF UCLA Yale U Arizona U Colorado
  19. @jezzie05 You worked in a UCSF lab; that's probably why.
  20. I wrote mine about the unique challenges of being a first gen college student. My advice: keep it positive!
  21. I'm going to agree with pachydermatus on cost of living. This, for me, is a huge drawback of New Haven and Conneticuit in general. I came from an area that was a much larger city and the cost of living was MUCH less than New Haven. Other than that, it's a nice area. There's a little crime (my car got broken into), but I've not felt unsafe walking around downtown or running.
  22. What's the transit situation like in/out of UCLA? I've visited but my friends had a car, so we didn't need to take the bus.
  23. I figured out how to turn my GRE scores into a PDF last week, so now I'm only waiting on my letter writers.
