  1. Someone posted an Indiana acceptance. Congrats to that person.
  2. That's a harsh rejection -- they have good stats. There was a Stanford one from yesterday though that was worse, for different reasons.
  3. Oregon was probably my most disappointing application. I got such an encouraging response from my POI in the fall that I decided immediately I was applying there. In the spring though, it was complete radio silence. I emailed the grad secretary last week, and I have one of those automated rejections coming my way. I thought I was a strong applicant. I talked to another person who applied to the same POI last year, and told me the same story. I know it is ridiculous, but it almost makes me wonder if schools encourage students to apply so they can get the application fees.
  4. Does anyone know much about spring admissions? It seems like some schools accept applications, but how many students do they admit? Are your chances significantly lower? I know it is likely dependent on the school, but just trying to get an idea. Thanks.
  5. I don't know how some of you are handling the wait. I've already heard news from a couple of schools and I am still ready to email all of my POI's today. Is it April yet?
  6. I don't know about oceanography. I got my information from the Graduate Coordinator, Sandy Thoms.
  7. Oregon sent out rejection letters today if anyone is waiting on them.
  8. Was anyone from here at the UT Austin prospective weekend in the Solid Earth & Tectonics group?
  9. Yes, I heard from my host on Monday night. She lives in a house with 3 other grad students. They are hosting 2 additional students this weekend besides me. I have no idea how is that going to work.
  10. I feel bad every time I email Phil. Can you imagine the amount of inquiries he gets this time of year? Between organizing the prospective student weekend and anxious students asking for status updates, he probably just sends emails all day long.
  11. No doubt. I've got 3 likely rejections hanging in the balance. I'd prefer to get them out of the way, but I am guessing I will have to wait until after student visits. The life of an alternate.
  12. Has anyone attending the UT student weekend been paired with their host yet or contacted by the Graduate Student Executive Committee?
  13. I was disappointed when I did not hear back from her. I had 3 UC schools on my potential list -- Davis, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara. I did not hear back from Davis or Santa Cruz. Santa Barbara was not the best research fit. I think my wife was disappointed we won't end up on/near the coast.
  14. Sorry, I'm going to go a bit off topic here. Geodude, do you know Sarah Roeske at Davis? Does she still work for the department or do research there? I met a couple of her students (former, maybe) at GSA. I was interested in working with her, but I never got a response to my inquiry. I'm curious because the UC-Davis website doesn't list her under the regular faculty.
  15. Congrats to GeoMex and IamLorde. That is excellent news. So, how many of us are going to the student weekend now? What are we thinking about it? Is it a formality to make sure we pass the eye test before an admission offer comes? Or is it more of an informal interview/competing for slots kind of thing? I think it's the former, but I'm curious to hear others opinions/experiences?
  16. Well, I emailed the graduate coordinators at Indiana and Oregon. Indiana has me listed an "alternate." Apparently, I'm a strong candidate, but my POI is not in great need of a new student. Oregon has now sent out all invites to their student weekend, in case anyone applied there. I did not receive one. I am batting 0 for 2 today. Not too disappointed in light of previous good news. By the way, I've found the graduate coordinators to be quite helpful if you are looking for news regarding your application. As long as you are apologetically polite and keep your emails to a minimum, most are glad to give you an update on where you stand.
  17. Congrats! That's awesome. I'd go to the open house and determine the best way to make up the work. Your professors will understand.
  18. I just got an email from my POI at UT Austin with an invite to the prospective student weekend (Feb. 21-24). Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Sorry about that.
  19. Good luck! When I mapped in western Arizona, we used a lot of literature and reference maps from Stephen Reynolds. He is a structure/tectonics professor there. My advisor had only positive things to say about him as well. It seems like a great department.
  20. Someone got into Arizona State, apparently. Good school. I love the Southwest. Congrats, random person!
  21. Thank you. Good luck with your applications as well. Let's hope the good news floods in this week.
