2015 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
darkstar replied to InquilineKea's topic in Earth Sciences Forum
I followed up with my POI at Montana yesterday. She told me the committee met Friday and I can expect my formal acceptance letter within the week. I am pretty much guaranteed a TA position, but I have to wait until it gets approved before I will know the exact details. I am so excited! Just knowing that no matter what else happens I have a great advisor and project as an option is such a relief. -

The Jackson School actually posts their admission stats, which is really nice. If I remember correctly, the average of admitted students from a couple of years back was something like 160 Q, 158 V. I'd post a link, but I'm too lazy. -

No, that part appeared today. Before, it only said that I'd be notified when a decision was made (which it still says). Much ado about nothing. I can't help it. I'm feeding off of scraps and looking to hang onto any new information I can. -

My status page for UT-Austin has updated. It now says "Your file has been forwarded to the Graduate Committee for review." Did this happen to anyone else? And what does it mean, if anything? Thanks. -

My POI at Colorado sent me an email saying I was a strong applicant, but she is unlikely to take an Msc student this year due to funding. Although she added that nothing was final until they sent out all the letters. Yeah, good times. -

To quote Bjork -- "it's oh so quiet." Everyone must be celebrating their acceptances...or not. -

Did anyone here apply to Boulder? -
Tectonics/thermochronology.

Debating it, but I think I am done. I can't shake the feeling there is some unknown school/professor who is a perfect fit and I somehow overlooked. However, that seems impossible with the amount of time I put into this process.

What earth science programs have the latest application deadlines? Here are a few I know of: Northern Arizona (2/1) Vermont, SUNY Binghamton, UNLV, Utah State, Idaho (2/15)

Seriously. Today I started with the self examination -- why did I apply to this place and not that place? Why didn't I contact this professor over here? Why did I leave this part out of my SOP? Why didn't I sign up for Magoosh to try to improve my GRE? It is going to be a long few weeks. -

Someone posted an acceptance to the geophysics program at UT-Austin today. Hopefully, a deluge of application news is on the horizon. -

I don't know. My earliest deadlines were UT-Austin (Jan. 1) and CU-Boulder (Jan. 7). From what I've seen on the results page for these two schools, I might get an interview around the last week of January or first week of February. -

I am so anxious for any news that I would even be excited for other people's news right about now. And yes, I know it is still too early. -

Thanks for the responses. I let one PI know know that I had applied. I let the others be. -

Should you email your PI to let them know when you have officially submitted your application? Is this overkill? Thanks. -

I think UT sends interview requests for their recruitment weekend near the end of February. I applied there, but nothing yet. I am not feeling super optimistic. -

Do late recommendation letters ever disqualify your application for admission? I have one referee (not sure if that is the proper term) who is late on submitting a letter that was due today. He says he did not receive the link to upload, and I've tried emailing the graduate admission office to resend it twice, and still heard nothing from them. I hope it will not be an issue, but it is stressing me out regardless. I cannot wait for this process to be over. -

I am submitting my applications close to the deadlines. I still have four more to go. I feel like such an underachiever. -
Thank you for your response. I would certainly like to be less picky with where I apply, but I have financial restrictions which prevents me doing that. Thus, I'm trying to commit my resources to a solid group of 4 or 5 schools I'm interested in where I also have the best shot at getting accepted. I really want to get into a good program this application season, as I am a non-traditional student and would like to finish graduate school sooner than later.

I am preparing to take the GRE in 4 days. When does the test ask you to enter the schools you want to submit your scores to? Does it do this at the beginning or end of the test (after you already know your results). There are some schools I am only going to apply to if my GRE is in the higher range. I've taken two powerprep practice exams and gotten 159 Q, 151 V on the first and then 160 V, 158 Q on the second. I would like to apply to UC Boulder, but I probably wouldn't do that with my first score. However, I'd probably take a run at it with the second even though my quantitative is still a bit low. That's why it would be helpful to know my scores before decided where I am sending them. Thanks.

Undergrad Institution: Large state school Major(s): Geology Minor(s): None GPA in Major: 3.85 Overall GPA: 3.83 Position in Class: 1 Type of Student: White male GRE Scores (revised/old version): I've only taken a ETS practice test so far. Taking the real GRE in one week. Q: 159 V: 151 W: N/A Research Experience: Completed an undergraduate thesis project that included detailed mapping of a 13 km squared area in western Arizona. I am the co-author on the map which is being published by the AZGS. Presented the results of my research during a poster session at this year's GSA meeting in Vancouver. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: First student in ten plus years to complete a thesis project in our department (we are not very research oriented). Top graduating student in department. Phi Beta Kappa. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I had a summer internship at the USGS which into a part-time job as a hydrologic technician. I did a summer internship working with a marine geochemist at the Carnegie Institute. I am currently employed as a geologic technician with a state geological survey. Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Gave a 30 minute long seminar talk at my college. Special Bonus Points: I have a lot of interesting work experience, even outside of geology. Definitely applying: University of Montana - Tectonics UC Boulder - Thermochronology Possibly applying: Indiana Pittsburgh University of Florida University of Oregon University of Oklahoma University of New Mexico Utah Cincinnati Iowa Binghamton Lehigh Idaho Vermont I am looking for some advice on schools I should apply to with this profile. Assuming the practice GRE is accurate and my scores don't improve, what schools are in reach/out of reach? Ideally, I'd like to only apply to about 5 schools. Boulder is my top choice, but it's feeling like a stretch unless I can get in the 320 range. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. -

jamesy1116 - I have a good idea who your PI at Montana is because I am very interested in working with that same person.
