  1. Does anyone know if schools ever notify waitlisters before accepted students? I would imagine not. #pregamingrejection
  2. Congratulations! You know, the prediction blog suggests the wait won't be as long as I expected. The semester is flying by fast.
  3. My original faux backup plan was to become a barista in New Zealand, but evidently it's more difficult to get a N.Z. work visa than it is to get into a philosophy program. Go figure!
  4. Nathan's suggestion looks good too, since it's running in April. I haven't taken that one. Awesome!
  5. Nastasya, I recommend Mike Genesereth's logic class on Coursera. I don't know when he'll be teaching it again, but it's a great class. It also covers relational and meta-logic far more thoroughly than most philosophy logic courses do. https://www.coursera.org/courses?query=logic Or if you like, you can audit my online Intro to Logic course at Rutgers. (This isn't an open invitation...it's a full class, so I can't take on many more people.) I'm using Language, Proof, and Logic (2nd edition), which is an expensive book, but it's worth it for the great software. If you're interested, PM me.
  6. I'm auditing a grad course in epistemology with Susanna Schellenberg and one with Alvin Goldman.
  7. Good luck, reixis. I'm glad you don't do epistemology, Jared. You look like a strong candidate.
  8. I'm done with all but Oxford. Which program decides next week, Brett? I for one am busier than I'd like to be right now.
  9. How's it going, kids?
  10. http://www.theupdirectory.com The UPDirectory publicizes information about philosophers who are members of traditionally underrepresented groups in philosophy. The purpose of the directory is to provide an easy-to-use resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the work of philosophers who belong to underrepresented groups within the discipline.
  11. On the recommendation of a friend who went through the application process last year, I'd like to start a private, climate-for-women-applicants group on Facebook. The following are welcome: transgender women, CISgender women, women of all sexualities (and no sexuality), and anyone else who lives everyday life as a woman (whether publicly or in secret, and whether by choice or not). If you're interested, private message me your info and I'll add you on FB. Actually, I can't create the group until I have at least one other member. If you'd prefer to have the group on this site instead (or in addition), perhaps for the sake of anonymity, I encourage someone familiar with the forum tech to start a private thread. If you do, please add me! A more general LGBT+ group would surely also be useful. This is meant to be a confidential, supportive space. Last year there was initially some argument over the value of having such a group. If you don't see the value in it, simply don't opt in. I am told that this was a wonderful experience last year, and it will be good to exchange our climate experiences, especially after campus visits. For my part, I am currently at Rutgers, and I'm very, very pleased with the climate in our department. Cherie
  12. One of my letter writers called U Penn about the deadline, and the administrative assistant told him the deadline for letters of recommendation isn't until January 4. The December 15th deadline is just for applicants.
  13. I hacked away at my paper with an axe to get down to 19 awful pages for U Penn. My arguments. My darlings. It's so depressing.
  14. I'm not planning to say anything embarrassing. And I don't have anything to hide. My name is Cherie Braden.
  15. In the Carnegie Mellon case, the solution that maximizes EU isn't obvious, is it? I'd say don't worry about it too much. It's a tiny concern.
  16. Being honest can backfire. Dishonest strategizing can backfire. 1. If being honest backfired, I might regret my failure to be strategic, but I wouldn't regret my honesty. (1 regret) 2. If dishonest strategizing backfired, I would regret strategizing and regret being dishonest. (2 regrets) 3. If being honest benefited me, I would not regret it. (0 regrets) 4. If dishonest strategizing benefited me, I might regret being dishonest. (0-1 regret) I'll take honesty.
  17. Why, 1991? Lookin' to poison me? I prefer tea to coffee.
  18. 1 - Stanford lets me add the GRE score from one date or add nothing. I have my scores, but my highest scores divide across two tests. Am I allowed to leave this part of the application blank and just send the scores through ETS? 2 - Stanford also wants to know what fellowships I'm applying for. Is that something I'm supposed to be doing now???? 3 - Does anyone know where to send transcripts for UPenn? 4 - Does it seem to you as though each school wants several pints of your blood? That's how I'm feeling.
