  1. I was accepted a couple of days ago after a rather rough interview. I will not be attending due to the location of the school - it's far from the subways and I do not feel comfortable traveling in the neighborhood at night. Best wishes to you all!
  2. Hi TMB! I was accepted to Columbia, Hunter, and Adelphi and I am planning to attend Adelphi due to its small program and proximity to where I'll be living. Feel free to shoot me any questions you might have! :-)
  3. Hi everyone! So as I'm sure many of you are receiving acceptances (and maybe some rejections), I am sure you're all freaking out about which program to commit to! At least that is my current experience... I was wondering if I could get some input about the programs of each of these schools. I was first accepted to Adelphi University on Long Island. Adelphi gave me 10k in scholarship, bringing the tuition to 23k a year. They also seemed very willing to place me in the field that I'm interested in - healthcare settings and with children/adolescents. They mentioned the option to specialize and possibly get placed at an Adolescent Trauma Center at a local hospital. I was then accepted to Columbia School of Social Work. They offered me 9.5k in scholarship, which is currently under review for additional funding. At the moment it would be 30k a year. They've been lenient with my concerns regarding my commute from Long Island. However, they haven't been able to guarantee me a field placement closer to my home - their policy is that it must be 90 minutes from the student's home. So, that could mean 5 days a week of commuting to Manhattan which would amount to 15 hours a week spent commuting. No time for a part time job! They have extended my deposit deadline to April 6th. I also have an interview set up at Hunter on April 8th. Now this is a dilemma because, say I commit to Columbia, I wouldn't hear back from Hunter until long after. UGH. But they are the cheapest program by far, at least 10k cheaper per year. Downside is that the commute would be even longer from my home and I'm not thrilled about the area. Some background information: I am moving back home to live in an apartment style basement with my boyfriend, who will be working full time. I did my undergrad in 3 years at NYU, getting a BA in Psychology as of May 2015. Money is a concern as is the commute, since it will eat up a LOT of time that could be spent working part time to make extra cash. However, I will be graduating with about 70k in loans from NYU. I'm hoping to do clinical social work in a hospital in a pediatric unit. I definitely don't want to settle in NYC or Long Island, but I do want to live at home during grad school to save some money. So it's important to me to go to a school where I can go possibly upstate or New England to get a job.... Sorry for the wall of text! I'm just super stressed about making the wrong decision. Feel free to share your situations as well for input!
  4. just set up my interview for april 8th!
  5. My application still reads as "submitted..."
  6. Bumping this back up! So I am still waiting on my financial aid package from Adelphi but I am hoping it will be more than Columbia has offered me...as of now I am leaning towards Adelphi for the smaller classes and location (I'll be living at home on Long Island). Anyone else thinking of attending Adelphi?
  7. I just got my financial aid...it's definitely not enough I was only offered 9500 in scholarship, which pretty much cuts the tuition to 30,000 (and I'm commuting from my parents so housing isn't even calculated in that!) How do I go about asking for more aid...??? My fafsa put me below the poverty level (I am independent but also a full time student) so I definitely qualify as having "need," but I guess that's not enough.
  8. I had to email them to update the status of my application from "incomplete" to "complete" a week or two ago because they never checked the unofficial transcript I submitted (2/5). Other schools are hassling me to know if I'm going to come and I don't know how long I can wait for Hunter to get their act together! Ughhh.
  9. As someone who has gone to NYU for undergrad, living uptown by Columbia is far better in my experience than down by NYU. The space you get in the East Village is like a closet as opposed to the nicely spaced out rooms and living areas in apartments in Manhattan Valley/West Harlem. I'm living quite close to Columbia now and commuting down to NYU because it's so much cheaper up there! Grocery stores uptown are also relatively cheaper - though trader joe's is probably your best bet either at 72nd street or union square. Brooklyn is also pretty affordable (as far as New York goes) but the subways are not as reliable or often. I personally didn't bother applying to NYU because they've made me jump through so many hoops to get my undergraduate degree, but what I've heard is that it's a great program at NYU! If you haven't lived in New York before, you're in for a treat. To everyone else still waiting, I'm keeping you all in my thoughts! Keep us posted!
  10. Hi everyone! Just wanted to know if anyone had some first hand experience in Adelphi's MSW program. I was accepted a couple of weeks ago and have heard some wonderful reviews, but when I went to visit over the summer, most of my peers were working professionals returning to the field. I am going straight from undergraduate to graduate school so I wasn't sure if this would be the right fit for me. I've also heard the program is more focused on clinical work than research. Thoughts? Best, Becky
  11. Keeping y'all in my thoughts and sending positive vibes your way as you await decisions! I'm also on the younger side - 21 as of December and graduating a year early as well. From what I understand is that Columbia's MSW students tend to be younger than other MSW applicants in the tristate area. Anyone else super concerned about the price tag on Columbia? I'm honored to have been accepted, but nervous about having additional loans on top of my NYU loans. I'm hoping to take part in a loan forgiveness program by way of public service for 10 years in a hospital or rural setting...but time will tell. Time to wait for the financial aid package!
  12. Hi all! I submitted my application on February 4th - uploaded my unofficial transcript via the "upload" button on the site. My application status still reads as "submitted" but "incomplete" for my transcript. Is this a bad sign...? Haha. The wait is killing me!
  13. Hi! Thank you - I heard back via email yesterday :-) I'm in the midst of completing my BA in Psychology at NYU. GPA is 3.8 and I've done nearly 200 hours of volunteer work at Mount Sinai's Children's Hospital. I also did some work for America Reads. I'm thrilled to be accepted!! But I'm waiting to hear back about financial aid before I get my hopes up, haha.
  14. Hi guys! I just registered here and super excited to share the grad application process with all of you I'm currently finishing up my BA in Psychology at NYU. I'm minoring in studio art and child and adolescent mental health. My overall GPA is a 3.8 and I'm graduating a year early (parents didn't give me much of a choice with that tuition haha). I've done about 150+ hours of volunteer work in Mount Sinai in NYC in the Child Life Department. I also worked for America Reads for a semester and am about to start another job at a school in a week. I'm applying to Columbia, Hunter, Adelphi, and possibly Fordham for their clinical social work/health social work programs. While it'd be a dream to go to Columbia, I know I can't afford any more private university loans I'm hoping to get into Hunter's MSW program, but I know it's super competitive. Figured I'd drop in and say hello! I'm only 20 and I've busted my ass academically my whole life. I hope my young age isn't going to deter any programs from accepting me... Good luck all!
