In the resource (oil) industry Most companies make an effort to reduce the financial loss due to undulating commodity prices by hedging their prices. Unfortunately when this doesn't work, I believe they solve the financial loss by releasing newly hired employees (explains why our beloved UT-Austin received "a zillion apps"). Leaving essential personnel. Could be wrong on this though... -

I spoke with their graduate coordinator on multiple occasions. She informed me that most of the first round acceptances went out last week. Further, she stated that depending on how many of those accepted students accept IU's offer there will likely be a second round of acceptances, where us wait-listed folk may have a shot. She said several rejections have already been sent out and in my case I should "expect to receive a rejection any time soon". Possibly because accepted students have until 4/15 to decide? Anyways, maybe you're in the same boat as I. You can always call Ms. Arcuri at IU, she is extremely kind and very helpful. Hope this helps. I'm extremely caffeinated so I feel as though I just rambled^^. -

I think I can safely say they are all my top choices! Which is lucky for me. I have yet to hear from UNC, which probably offers the most exciting project. So, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed! I hope things work out for you in the coming weeks! -

Hi ssynny, fortunately I have one acceptance and one wait list. The other four of the six schools I have applied to have maintained their silence. Hopefully I will hear something soon. How about you? -

Right! He was nothing short of courteous. My main point was I personally think professors do not know much more than we do about their future ability to fund and take on students.. -

I think the grad application process is extremely fluid. For instance, I had long conversations with my PoI at Texas several months before the application deadline. He told me on multiple occasions to apply, and that he looked forward to reviewing my materials. A month ago he informed me he was no longer accepting students as he is on the cusp of retirement. This may not be the best anecdote, but I'm not so sure the professors are entirely sure of a) how many students they can take or their funding situation. Others know better than I on this thread... -

^ sorry, my phone is ridiculous... I think most profs receive hundreds of emails a day... I'm not sure it means they are necessarily ignoring you though -

From what I've seen, most professors are literally some of the most busy individuals. Some may know better, -

I've pretty much done my best to forget that I've applied to graduate school. Mainly with the hopes that I'll be pleasantly surprised with any news... Fortunately for me three of the six school to which I applied do not admit students until March (or so I've been told). -back to forgetting about grad school- -

One of the programs that I applied to contacted me and said that they are sending out some acceptances and that I'm certainly, "of interest", they are just trying to figure out funding. If I dkbt hear from them in the next week or two I'm supposed to call back. Is this being wait listed? Or is this common? -

Are those spots then offered to other candidates? Or do they remain unfilled until the next application season? -

I was informed that my POI at UT-Austin is no longer accepting students as he plans to retire within the next year or two. This isn't a total shock and he was nice enough to recommend me to another faculty member. We'll see how that works out.. He also said that the department received more applications than normal and that many applicants, as suspected by many of you, were previously employed in O&G. Making the applicant pool pretty stout I would imagine. That being said, those that are already accepted congratulations! And to those that have been invited to visit, I've gotta think that's a great sign as well! -

Not sure. Indiana does evaluates candidates in a similar fashion. Applicants are seperated based on interest and then ranked. -

I actually spoke with him this morning. He told me that contrary to popular belief the faculty to which you have indicated your interest gets the first look at your application. If the hydro group or Dr. X is the petrology group wants you he/she recommends you to the Adcom, who apparently has the final say on your decision. He said offers will be made in to March. He also said if you haven't hear back yet it could be for a number of reasons; they received over 600 apps this year... -
