  1. To anyone whose posted something about UCLA:

I'm seeing people on the results board saying they got an email to check the website.  I haven't gotten anything from UCLA yet.  I tried checking the online application, but I can't find anything anywhere that reveals your admissions status.  What website are you guys talking about?

UCLA Graduate Division decision status page. It's the same page I've been checking for ages, and I honestly checked it about fifteen minutes before I got the email and there was still nothing there. Got the email and the decision was up, so you just have to hold tight and wait (looks like they've been rolling out decisions over the last week or so...obnoxious).

  2. Thank you for acknowledging that my anger is based on real world problems, instead of going CBT "you are doing great" on me. I really appreciate that.

Thank you for your comforting words, but there is no need to be dishonest. Nobody reasonably young who is working towards PhDs or ScDs  right now was stuck at a community college like me.

Hola! High school drop-out, 3.5 years at exceptionally shitty community college, reasonably young current Oxford graduate student here. It is possible! I used to feel really embarrassed and miserable about the community college thing, but really, people don't look down on you because of it, and they'll respect your dedication and hard work. Dreams aren't always easy, and often require huge amounts of struggle, but flexibility in how you get there and your timeline is key :)

Please though, keep your appointment for next week, and like another poster said, call 1-800-273-TALK if you need someone over the weekend.

  3. Has anyone else not heard ANYTHING from ANYWHERE? I mean...I'm assuming that Cornell and Berkeley are nos, since some people have posted acceptances for both, but other than that I'm getting 100% radio silence. I mean, perhaps it has something to do with the relatively late due dates for my schools (January 1st or later)? And I guess hearing nothing with nothing posted in the results is better than hearing nothing while other people have results....but really though? Really?

Total silence for me too. I'm assuming no acceptance at two places on account of not getting interviews, but yeah...going a little crazy having heard nothing at all from anyone else!

  4. I just got accepted to University of Washington!  Who knew they would send out an acceptance email on a Sunday morning?  Offered a 50% tuition scholarship and invited to an accepted students weekend in March - I am kinda freaking out right now!  Congrats to everyone else who got good news this week, I'm sure there's more to come!!!

PS: Is it bad that I posted on gradcafe before I even called my parents?

Did my undergrad there (absolutely loved it), and worked at the Burke for a year. Let me know if you have any questions. Congratulations!

  5. I'll try to forget about it, but I'm very, very curious :P Did you guys get other tempting offers as well when you first applied to Oxford? Was it hard to decide?

Hahahaha I was actually having too much fun goofing off on a project in Brazil during application season and I forgot to turn in my applications anywhere else on time. Had already made plans to stay on in Brazil, and needless to say was pretty shocked with the Oxford acceptance. Love it here though!

Anyway, best of luck to you all!

  6. Got an offer for an MSc, having applied in October (had an interview in January 7 and received the offer in January 22). Now waiting for the college offer and any new information while freaking out about what I'll do in case I also get an offer from Cambridge.

Head's up (from a current student in another program) that it will likely take several months to get a college placement. So now that you're in, don't stress too much about hearing back on that because it'll be ages and it's needless worry :)

  7. Ha, no you got it! UK still holds sway; all depends on funding though. What about you? Any word from Duke? (That's your top outside of ISCA correct?)

Hahaha wooo! I spent an egregiously long time this morning sitting in Brew not writing my thesis, and instead trying to decide if this was really you. You made a typo in a previous post and that was the only strike against you being you. If there's another Canadian out there who did a Masters at Ox last year and wants to work with Michael Lambek, then I figured you've got a problem with academic identity thieves :P

Wasn't on the interview shortlist for Duke, so I'm out (FML...what more do they want??). Haven't heard back from anyone else and I didn't even apply to ISCA in the end. MBanks was trying to convince me the other day, but I'm like show me the ££££ first and stop the dinos in the department from making fun of me and my project and I'll reconsider. *sigh*

Come back. Library and gym both boring without you (though we've had a whole host of LOUD typists move into the library and weights idiots into the gym so maybe you're better off...).

  8. I am quite pleased! My POI is Michael Lambek, his work is very similar to mine and he's well known so he's a good fit, not sure if I'm totally sold on Toronto though (even if I am Canadian). Ah, you have my sympathies. When I first contacted Lambek I mentioned that I had just finished a Masters at Oxford and he, thinking I was an international, flat-out warned me that there is very little funding for non-Canadians. I hope you're one of the lucky few!

If you're going to Toronto, does this mean you're not rejoining the Wolf Pack? ISCA library back room has been lonely without you here this year, man.

And apologies if you aren't who I think you are ;)

  9. To the Duke interviewee:

Did the invite come from the central department (secretary or something), or a particular prof?

Ie: is there any hope that mine might be coming along soon? Spent a good chunk of my morning sobbing in the library upon realizing there's no interview invite in my inbox.
