  1. I feel like I toot my own program's horn a lot, but we definitely have both at CU Boulder (I do mixed and health).
  2. Umass Boston is funded, though when I got in last year it looked like they wanted me to do some BS stuff like paying for an undergrad class.
  3. They sometimes accept in waves. I was "unofficial" waitlisted last year, meaning I didn't hear until about march when most people heard in january.
  4. You can. I don't super remember the deal with the shorter writing sample, but I can ask someone if need be. Sure! I don't know how that works, but private messages are fine.
  5. Hey grad school hopefuls! I used grad cafe last year when I was applying, and I figured I'd start this thread now that the first deadlines are about a month away. Now that I'm a first year in my PhD program, I thought it might be helpful if I answered some questions people might have (from my very limited experiences of just myself). I'm sure it would be helpful if other people who are currently in grad school could answer too! So basically, you can throw some questions at me and I'll do my best to answer. I do have, you know, school and work, but I'll do my best.
  6. I did my undergrad at stony brook. There's a lot of great stuff with gender, and an emphasis of Masculinities if you're looking for it. I did a grad class there. You can pm me if you have more questions.
  7. She's on sabbatical at Harvard because she's a rock star, but she'll be back by next fall I believe. There are a bunch of other people who could probably inform your work well. I've really liked it here in the department so far. Feel free to pm if you have more questions.
  8. Hey I'm currently a first year at CU Boulder. If you're interested in expanding your list, it sounds like your interests fit pretty well. We have concentrations in health and gender specifically. Sanyu Majola has done work with HIV/AIDs and women specifically, and she's also really badass.
  9. My undergrad gave me a REALLY hard time about it, and tried to retest me for all learning disabilities, which I declined eventually because it involved missing a lot of class time. I'm just moving to my PhD, so I may look into it.
  10. I have concerns about this as well. My situation is pretty mild. I have dyslexia so it's much better to type my notes. For some reason (I think a study saying writing is more effective) I had a couple of professors at the end of undergrad try to give me a hard time. I'm really hoping it won't be a problem.
  11. Am I the only one that cringed at the language in this article? hooker-wear?
  12. I'll be there in the fall for sociology.
  13. I work for the office. We're bound to only post what the town considers legal, which is extremely limiting. We're hoping there will be more listings soon, but definitely check out stonybrook.edu/offcampusliving for the resources you need to make sure stuff from sources other than our site is safe.
  14. You could start looking now for housing. If you're moving in August, I'd optimally start May but no later than middle of June.
  15. I was sent an email February 24th saying I was on the waitlist, and it seemed fairly long because the emphasized I shouldn't go visit unless I got in even though I'm fairly local. I decline them over a week ago. I'd call if you haven't heard.
