  1. Hey, congrats OP on the ETH acceptance! I'm currently attending the RSC masters at ETH, and can say that it's really great. Would just like to write that there are no ETH Engineering students going to Germany to look for work due to lack of work in Switzerland. There are plenty of companies hiring ETH students here, and they pay very well. Friends from the RSC program are doing (well-paid) internships at Facebook, Google, Bosch, Intel, IBM, Disney Research, etc. If you're thinking of doing a phd after, ETH is a really great place to do it. Takes about 3 years after you finish the masters, and also pays very well (more than makes up for the cost of living). Edit: Can try to to answer some of your questions: Are there any chances of a Research Assistantship at ETH that could pay my cost-of-attendance? Yes. There is the ESOP program (which if you didn't apply for at admission, it's too late to apply for). I applied and didn't get it, but I asked my tutor if he would have any "research assistant"-like positions open, and they hired me. Working 15 hours a week in the semester, and I can work up to full time in the semester breaks (42 hours). It pays quite well. What are the chances of PhD in well-reputed universities/research groups and job opportunities at both places? From where would it be easier to get a PhD/research post at the lab of my choice after completing MS? You'll be able to get into PhD programs in the US with an ETH degree. It's well known and respected, and improving every year still. Will ETH be stronger on the theoretical basis standpoint and CMU on the practical standpoint respectively? ETH is much more theoretical than I expected for an engineering program. I took the Machine Learning course from Buhmann last semester and it was almost entirely theoretical and proof based. That said, there are many courses that offer projects. Will there be a balance of both or will one university offer a better balance than the other? Work-life balance at ETH is hard. Much harder than at my previous Uni. But, I'm also working and studying at the same time, which is not as common here as in the US. I personally have the impression that CMU will focus more on the engineering aspect and how to build solutions and on the other hand, ETH will be deeper into the theoretical aspects and less so into the implementation parts. What are your thoughts? See above. Will the election of Trump affect foreign students in terms of the flow of funding, etc? Or are those things entirely in the hands of the university? Assuming this is about CMU. Has anyone have had any experiences with ProdigyFinance? Good or Bad? No, sorry.
  2. Maybe too late, but I had a similar problem in Switzerland. I was mailing documents to the uni here from the US, and I just brought the diploma and transcript to my bank, the lady made a copy of both and typed a note saying that she certifies that it is a copy of the diploma I gave her. She then notarized everything. No problems from the uni. I sent them to Uni Stuttgart, and Hochschule Reutlingen as well.
  3. Got the rejection email today. Rejected for ESOP and MSP. Good luck to everyone that still hasn't heard!
  4. Same position. Except this is my second year applying to grad schools been waiting since November of last year. Didn't get funding anywhere, so I took an extended internship and reapplied for spring and fall 2016. Waiting for the GRFP, but I can't accept it even if I get it. Non-US master's program in the fall.
  5. Time to find $21,000 elsewhere for my visa application
  6. I was admitted to the Robotics, Systems and Control MSc on March 1, and I received my admissions letter and registration form today, March 7 (in N.Y., USA). I received no additional requirements, much to my surprise as I have a B.Sc. in Applied Physics from a liberal arts university. It does seem to heavily depend on who evaluates your profile. My assigned tutor is the professor who responded to my email containing the ESOP proposal, so I believe applying for the ESOP helped my application, whether I ultimately receive the award or not. (For future applicants: make sure your idea is reasonably well suited to one or more professors research. They must select you! My research proposal didn't fit exactly, but in an email response from my tutor (before acceptance), he suggested a way the project could be easily adapted to fit the equipment and projects they already have on hand). The letter instructed me to mail in the signed original enrollment form (enclosed with the acceptance letter), my original university and high-school diplomas (not copies), and a copy of my passport data page. The originals will be returned in person when I pick up documents from ETH before the fall semester. I tried to include any information that might be interesting or useful to future applicants. If you'd like to know anything else, please let me know. Some folks in the 2014 and 2015 threads posted timelines for future applicants. I'll post mine now for future reference, and update this post when I hear the results of the ESOP. Program: Robotics, Systems and Control M.Sc. Applied: November 27, 2015 ESOP Interview: None Acceptance email: March 1, 2016 Acceptance letter, by mail: March 7, 2016 ESOP Result: ???
  7. By "afford" I guess I mean pay for the first six months until I'm allowed to get a job . Even with the high cost of living in Zurich, it's still cheaper than a public university in the US... I've been waiting tables since I got home from Germany and saving all the money. It's not a lot, but it's a start Congrats @canas!
  8. That was the plan. But Zurich was the first choice. I don't think I really have enough money saved to live in Stuttgart for the summer and then pay for Zurich. Congrats to everyone accepted! Keeping my fingers crossed/ "thumbs pressed" for everyone still waiting.
  9. My last name starts with T and I heard at 5:40 a.m. EST. About an hour after you? We need a few more sample points
  10. We could compile a list of our initials with acceptance dates and times haha. But, as a note for future applicants, they do send the emails individually at different times. Not like the batch systems at other universities where they press a button to send a batch of notifications. (For people like me. I was sad reading the thread this morning thinking I wouldn't hear today)
  11. Scratch that, just got in! To astone42, yes, the button comes back and application status remains "submitted"
  12. Congrats! Didn't you have another friend that applied to RSC? I'm still waiting to hear :/
  13. Yeah, so it may be up to the department who they recommend for scholarships. They may do any combination of 1) immediately recommending applicants with outstanding profiles/ proposals 2) interview students before giving recommendations. If they're allowed 5 recommendations, maybe they pick the two best with no interview, then interview ten people for the last three recommendation spots. I guess we'll see what happens hoping for more admissions results for Robotics tomorrow (including my admission result please!)
  14. There was a person a year or two ago that posted in this thread that got the ESOP without an interview. It depends on the department it seems. Also, departments sometimes offer assistantships and scholarships in rare cases. It would definitely be better to get an interview, but there is still a small chance. EDIT: Here is the link
  15. At this point I'm starting to feel better and to think this happens when it is under review. In a thread full of ESOP applicants, 5 or 6 of us have no withdraw button (everyone from robotics systems and control, plus you in physics). I can't imagine that every person in this thread that is applying to RSC will get rejected.
