Kbui do you have any suggestions on how to find who is on the Fulbright board ? I have tried in the past for Kenya but it seemed impossible !
-
Anyone hitting a wall with their proposals ?
-
I totally agree ! Have you already submitted your application for this year ? is the time line different for scholars than research or ETA ?
-
No ugh still trying to figure out. All the advice I seem to get always seems polarizing. I am torn, calling an NGO I had hoped to work with in Mongolia today to see if my ideas are plausible
-
Also has anyone had issues getting a hold of regional advisors ? I have tried emailing Jake and haven't had any luck with a response
-
oooh ! oooh ! for anyone who obsessively mulls over the statistics ..the Fulbright Grantee Directory has been updated for 2014
-
LOL Nope unfortunately the cold weather is not a surprise ! I have been struggling to find a Mongolian tutor !
-
I'm interested in conservation research ! And I knowww haha I have Mongolia on my iphone weather and its been so cold and its not even their cold season !

Considering applying to Mongolia this year, does have any contacts in Mongolia ?!

Well from what Jermaine explained to me was that for the 2014-2015 window applicants were selected and then after the fact were told that Kenya was a no go so those selected applicants were forced to adapt their proposals to neighboring countries .. he then said that there were in fact applicants chosen for this year but thats not to say that this year wont be canceled before the grants begin as well. A Fulbright Ambassador actually suggested I not re-apply to Kenya due to the fact that if its canceled for one year it is often canceled for the following. And the recent attack on that school, and just the over all arching issue of kidnapping of foreigners now I don't see how this year is any more safe than the last. So if your university has canceled support it might be a sign that Kenya might ultimately force those selected to once again work in neighboring countries. But its unfortunate since the 2016-2017 application cycle still has Kenya open for applications. It just makes the entire process just that more complicated, trying to guess whats going on behind closed doors. I wish there was more transparency with Fulbright. I know they can't all tell us why we weren't selected, but it would be nice to know what is going on, or what type of applications were selected last year or this year even if ultimately no one gets to go. *Sigh* I had focused on mainly anti-poaching/elephant conservation in my most recent proposal, and now I am considering changing it from population increase and the impact on elephant conservation in ... Tanzania maybe it will be less of a danger factor ? But who is to say Tanzania isn't dealing with a similar safety issue as well... who knows ! Either way anyone who is mak'n their way into the 2016-2017 forum will find me there this upcoming year.

Please let us know ! I am also re-applying and I no longer have an FPA at my University, so I am scrambling for feed back on how to make changes to my proposal ! I am considering actually adjusting my proposal from Kenya to Tanzania... but not sure yet.

Hi Friends ! I heard back from Jermaine and he said that there were in fact grants awarded to Kenya for the grant year of 2015-2016, although apparently there weren't any the year before. And to think the Fulbright process is still throwing me through a loop even at this stage. SO hopefully this is good news for those who are still waiting in areas that might be dealing with conflict !
-
Bummer. I hope Jordan is announced soon !
-
Did he happen to confirm that Kenya didn't give out any grants this year by chance ?..
-
Update: For those still waiting .. I heard from a past Fulbright grantee that incase of security status changes in a country.. accepted applicants are often told to rework proposals in neighboring countries .. so maybe if you're still waiting to hear back safety concerns might not completely impact your chance ?

Posting this again .. (sorry not sorry) shock is wearing off ... This makes me feel so much better. I am still sad for everyone but man I had asked Jermaine Jones if it would have an impact before notifications came out and he said they would consider it but he didn't say it would be a no grant zone. Less sting for sure ! This makes my decision to re-apply to Kenya or else where a little bit harder
-
OH MY GOD I AM IN SO MUCH SHOCK
-
awww I hope you get moved up ! Crossing my fingers for you

This is good to know ! I agree and so far the input from many people has been that "this is already being done, or has been done before". I'm so crazy thankful for this forum. I was the only person to apply through my University last year, and this year I don't think they will even have an FPA. So I'm thankful for everyone who has offered so much advice. Bluefit .. how did you decided where what tweeks to make ?

I guess I should have made it a little more clear this is the first time I've applied to Kenya with this specific application. The other two were different But you do make a good point when you say " many people who want to save elephants. What will your project add to enhance what they have? Or what new angle can you bring?" I think this could have been the down fall. Thank you ! your feedback is helpful !

I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, I am considering re-applying this year. I just recently made it as a Finalist to Kenya but ultimately wasn't awarded the grant (3rd time applying second time finalist). My focus was on elephant conservation work. I'm not sure if I should A. re-apply to Kenya again and use the same application, or B. Apply to a neighboring country using the skeleton of my past proposal only adapting it to fit similar elephant/rhino conservation issues .. or completely start from scratch and focus on a second idea..researching and documenting mobilizing healthcare workers via motorcycles/motorcycle ambulance work. I worked so hard, and really believe in my past proposal and I don't want to drop it. But I'm scared because the Kenya U.S embassy had multiple articles on their website supporting elephant conservation, and wildlife support and they still didn't pick my proposal. ( I honestly don't even know if I could put together a better one than I did last year personally ) I feel like I had a solid proposal.. and at this point I feel like I'm navigating unseen politics or something that I can't control no matter how great of a proposal I have. So do I start from scratch and go through the hard work again building from the ground up ? do I adapt my proposal ? Either way I would be applying to an east African region again most likely. Any input would be awesome.. :/ If anyone would be interested in reading my past proposal and giving me any feed back please message me and I will send you an email !

Whelp... back in the game again..

You just made my day ! Congrats !!

I applied to Princeton in Africa once in 2012 but that is a good idea since I haven't really considered it since !

Any SSA applicants who weren't selected considering applying again ?! This was my 3rd time and I just feel like the ratio of grants being so small makes the application process so ..what feels like impossible. I studied Swahili in college as well as out side of it, and I have also lived in Uganda. So I am dedicated to east Africa with a deep burning passion especially Kenya. I would love to think I would be willing to apply again, but I am now 25 .. and I know there is a weird time frame for how long you can be out of school and still apply. And over all I'm kind of hopeless at this point (in a realistic way not so much feeling sorry for myself way). This year my proposal was aimed to focus on elephant conservation and the focus on the declining elephant population .. which they even have multiple articles supporting and highlighting on my counties embassy website. I understand there are risk/danger factors that could have played apart in their choices. Do I take this proposal and try it with neighboring countries dealing with declining elephant population and hope next year its still relevant ? Or do I start completely fresh with a country that actually awards more than 3 grants a year ... Its hard being nominated twice and just throwing in the towel but I honestly don't know what I could possibly do different after trying so many times ! During my campus evaluation this year I was laughing at the fact that it was my third time applying, and one of the committee members said " I understand I applied 4 times before getting my Fulbright" .. so do i even dare ? Any feed back on whether anyone thinks applying a 4th time is worth it or if I should just move on ? .. I feel slightly like an insane person. *sigh* But on a positive note this forum has made the waiting process and my overall Fulbright experience a million times more enjoyable this year than the times when I didn't know it existed.
