  1. Cool, you're welcome! Definitely keep UVa Politics in mind though. I think profs SM, JC, JJ and others would be a good fit (and poli-sci job market seems marginally better than history). I also overheard that UVa politics will be doing another "American Political Development" (read, political history) hire within the next few years. Best of luck in the upcoming application cycle
  2. University of Virginia is one of the few places that I am aware of (Johns Hopkins bring another, perhaps) that encourage the type of historically focused work you're interested in. They have a pretty strong placement record too (even for the qualitative folks), so consider giving them a look.
  3. I've declined my Texas - Austin, and, Stony Brook offers. Hope that this allows someone to receive a last minute offer. People might think I am a bit crazy on the SB choice, but they seriously need to improve the stipend....that'd be too stressful for me. Plus, I really liked my visit to UVA and think that it will be great fit. Regardless, it's the 15th at last! Woohoo! Congrats to everyone who got in this cycle
  4. As one brilliant GradCafe member once put it, "well, there's your decision, mate." Congratulations, man!
  5. Admitted at Stony Brook. Lots of 11th hour action for me
  6. Haha, thanks man! Excellent quote, too! I hope that you are admitted off of one of those wait lists!
  7. Stony Brook will be moving on the wait list soon.
  8. Congratulations! Any chance that you'll be able to visit on Friday?
  9. Thanks, y'all! Yes, it is now between those two....tough decision!
  10. Good conversation going on above! Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been admitted to UT-Austin as of early this a.m.
  11. Texas wait-list friends, expect some movement early next week.
  12. FWIW, my advisor (a well regarded Americanist) thinks that UC-Boulder is a program on the rise. He thinks that their faculty are good, and has told me that he is seeing more and more impressive Colorado PhDs at conferences and on the job market. Also, though this is a secondary issue, Boulder > Iowa City. I personally have known three Iowa PhDs, two of them very successful (one in IR and one in comparative) and one of them a hopelessly bad adjunct (comparative). So, while I don't think you can really go wrong here, if I were in your position, I would go with Colorado, mainly because my advisor knows his stuff and is excited about UC-Boulder. Also, on the signing bonus, I am assuming that Iowa offered you one following your disclosure to them that Colorado had done so? Am I right? If so, nice dealing!
  13. Thanks! Well, it was pretty generic, though I suspect that it probably wasn't sent to many (based on the info I have pertaining to UVA's admission process--pm me if you're curious). I hope that you hear something positive soon!
  14. In at UVA, as of early this morning!
  15. You just want to know before Georgetown's tip off today versus Utah, so that you know whether or not you should root against the Hoyas....am I right? But, seriously, you'll know soon. And if you haven't heard by Thursday or Friday, shoot 'em an email. I'm waiting on a few too.
  16. "Ruling out" academic jobs is probably a bit unwarranted. However, regardless of where you attend, I think it is smart have a non-academic career plan in the back of your mind, should you strike out on the academic job market. And, since GMU is so close to DC, a non-academic route may be easier to pursue there, relative to most other places. But, if you want to be in academia, I say do what you need to while completing the PhD (wherever you go) to put yourself in the best position to attain that goal. If it doesn't pan out, then go to your plan B. Best of luck in making your decision!
  17. They try to attain a yield of exactly 10 people per year, from my understanding. So, after the initial 10 offers, they only make additional ones as they receive notice of offers being declined.
  18. Between you, Auldreekie, and I, (at least) one of us will be admitted to UVA. In other news, Colorado-Boulder finally officially notified me that I am on their wait list, haha.
  19. Heard from them at all recently?
  20. At both that I have been to thus far, dark denim jeans, loafers, and a polo definitely suffice. So, casual, but within reason. One of the programs I went to referred to it as "smart casual," if you are familiar with that term.
  21. Anyone wanting to get a closer look into the admissions process, there is a really cool thread recently started and pinned over on the sociology board. A grad student who was a member of their admissions committee is answering questions on the process....I bet that poli Sci admissions committees function in pretty similar fashion.
  22. I assume that you meant that you "wouldn't choose Pittsburgh over Illinois." Cool that you are beginning to narrow your decision!
  23. Have you decided to commit someplace, or are you only sure that you will not be attending that program?
