  1. Congrats unræd too! My status has changed from "completed" to "in progress" and I just want to know if I'm *really* leaving New York state.
  2. Congrats Florentinoariza!
  3. Congrats Caroline on the wait list at UNC. I was there last summer and it was really beautiful and friendly. Keeping my fingers crossed that it turns into a full acceptance for you!
  4. As my adviser told me, grad school is like taking it to a higher gear, not exchanging a car for an airplane. It's more work, longer hours, etc. But it's essentially building off the skills you already have. I wouldn't worry at all about rejections. It really IS a crapshoot. Celebrate your acceptance and good fit as a sign that the people who approved your application are interested in your work, what you have to offer the program, and their confidence in your ability.
  5. Congrats Caroline and Lycidas!
  6. In my case I mentioned to the directors at both of my admitted schools that I was considering another offer without mentioning the amount. They replied that they had nominated me for additional funds and gave me an idea of what those funds could look like. I also asked outright about relocation reimbursements and travel reimbursement for the visiting week. I think I'd have a little more wiggle room if my schools were in the same tier, but I will say that if you have two acceptances that you are in a position of power and to use that to your advantage. If you're worried about money in any way, make it clear to them. If they can't offer you more money they will most likely tell you what other students have done like graderships, additional summer funding, competitive scholarships, and so forth.
  7. When you realize it's a long holiday weekend and that you won't be hearing from schools until Tuesday at the earliest.
  8. :Give me back my young brother, hard and furious, with wide shoulders and a curse for God and burning eyes that look upon all creation and say, You can have it." RIP Philip Levine

  9. I had questions about funding with UCLA too so I directed my questions to both Helen Deutsch and Mike Lambert. They were both really open to answering what I had to say. I then asked my POI some things like, "Do students seem to struggle financially" and so forth to get an advisers perspective. Everything they told me, from additional funding available through application and how other students get additional fellowship years was very helpful and comforting.
  10. I learned Latin through Latin Via Ovid by Norma Goldman which has both the textbook and a workbook. It moved at the right pace for me, but I did find that once participles and deponent verbs were introduce that I needed some outside help. To which http://apps.nationalarchives.gov.uk/latin/advanced/default.htmwas helpful. Also, you'll find that a chart will be immeasurably useful. Something that you can use as a reference over and over again without needing to crack open a book. Sorry for the Amazon link, but http://smile.amazon.com/Latin-Grammar-Quickstudy-Inc-BarCharts/dp/1572228350/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423938955&sr=8-1&keywords=latin+chartwas SO helpful for me because it was laminated and easily accessible. Wheelock is kind of useful as secondary material, but I wouldn't use it as a primary source. I'm not a medievalist though so perhaps some of the other sources will serve you better for medieval Latin.
  11. I took up knitting in the middle of the application stress phase. It was great to be able to having something to do with my hands while I thought through my SOP/WS or whatever. It's been a real mind-saver during this waiting period too.
  12. "Thou'dst shiver'd like an egg: but thou dost breathe; Hast heavy substance; bleed'st not; speak'st; art sound... Thy life's a miracle. Speak yet again."

  13. Congrats!! So great to hear! I'm hoping they'll announce their joint English and Women's studies soon
  14. I'm in the same boat.. Bloomington is just so much more affordable than LA, but I know UCLA is seen as a "better" school. I'm so conflicted!
  15. This has got to be the longest year of my life. And by year, I mean the last two weeks.
  16. YAY WT! I have been rooting for you on the sidelines and while I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a PhD acceptance I think that this is a great plan B for you
  17. hahaha! SO many congrats though!
  18. Congrats Lycidas and hreaðemus!! Big big news on all fronts!
  19. Congrats mmmscience and Hannalore!! Glad to hear the good news
  20. I hope I won't be mocked for this, but I've just started reading The Taming of the Shrew. I hadn't ever had a chance to read it in high school or in my class on Shakespeare (which focused more on the tragedies). I will say though, that I have seen Kiss Me Kate with Howard Keel (who was also fantastic in Kismet). I'm also re-reading Middlemarch for an in depth study of the book and it's very nice to read it at a leisurely 60 pages a week instead of having to finish the text in two weeks! I can actually enjoy it now.
  21. Yes! There's been a lot of Dylan for me lately, both in father and son forms. Highway 61 Revisited has been on my playlist, as well as Jakob Dylan's Seeing Things. Outside of that there's been a lot of study music on Pandora which includes Moby, Tokimonsta, Xx, Colcannon, and Miles Davis. I'm loving this thread though. It's awesome to see what kind of music people listen to!
  22. Hello all! First, I know there's a "Decisions" forum already, but to be honest... I've looked through the topics and responses and was both simultaneously annoyed at how unhelpful some of the people are and horrified at how malicious others were. I hope you all don't mind that I start this topic here because I think, as English majors, we have a lot of things that are important to consider since our stipends tend to be on the lowest end of the spectrum and so forth. I just wondered what criteria you all feel is important in deciding between schools. I didn't apply to any place I wouldn't want to live or where there weren't people I wanted to work with. So, what are you all using as a metric to help you decide? If you have a top choice, how did it get there for you? I'm trying to use placement ratings and cost of living/stipend as my main deciders, but it's proving to be difficult. Sort of like, apples and oranges, in my case. Any other suggestions about what to use in order to make the best decision?
