Hi All, I'm sure this might have been covered but I'm asking for your help (please!) I do not live in Missouri and I am not familiar with St.Louis at all. I currently am starting UMSL in the Fall and I'm looking for an apartment, preferably a 2 bed room or large one bedroom for $1000 or less. I have looked and found some places on Craiglist but I have no idea if these places are close to UMSL or even safe areas. Any advice would be helpful, Thank You!
  2. After being accepted to both schools for Criminal Justice I would say choose Rutgers. They have a lot of opportunities to engage in policy relevant research and a lot of connections with think tank agencies like VERA and RAND. Quite a few professors have grants right now (I'm not sure what you area of interests are), and the Dean is Shadd Maruna for crying out loud! Lol Awesome. Todd Clear is also the Provost and has alottttt of projects going on now. While the cost of living is higher than FSU, I still think it's a great school!
  3. The standard package is four years full funding and healthcare. First year you will be an RA.
  4. I'm in social sciences and mainly for writing purposes!
  5. Hi All, I was wondering if someone could help me out. I'm going to start grad school in the Fall and I'm looking to buy a laptop. I'm not an "Apple" person so I'm hoping someone could recommend a PC, something that I can walk around with will be best! Thanks guys!
  6. Okay, this definitely make sense! Thank you all for calming my jitters!
  7. Hey All, I will be starting my PhD this Fall and I need your help (please excuse my ignorance). When selecting someone outside of my school (different state) on my dissertation committee, how would they be able to assist me? Does he/she just call/email me from time to time? Do we physically meet periodically? Can I work with him/her on several projects as well? Thank You! (I'm pretty new to all of this, sorry)

  9. I thought so, thank you for the clarification!
  10. Thanks for all your input! I'm going to try making a list, I'm hoping to make a decision by the end of next week. I should add that graduates from School A fare better on the job market
  11. Hi All, I'm not sure where to post this so I decided to start a new topic. I have a sick obsession with Sudhir Venkatesh and I would love to take one of his classes! I was wondering how hard it would be to get into a class taught by him at Columbia? Thanks!
  12. Hi All, I'm currently torn between two programs and I am hoping you guys can help as I am trying to make a decision by the end of the month. School A: -Top 5 in my field - Has both qualitative and quantitative scholars - Would have to alter my research interests a bit - POI very well known in field has a lot of grants - Willing to negotiate funding offer - Faculty seem excited to have me - Great location - Majority of faculty well known in field - Cost of living expensive - Would have to move across country - Would require working in the summer School B - Top 10 - Good funding offer - Faculty a lot more laid back - Both quantitative and qualitative researchers - A lot of faculty excited about my research interests - POI would be a perfect fit - POI not as well known as School A POI - More "applied" research - Not the best location - Only female in very small cohort P.S. Looking to work in policy or at a research think tank. Thanks for your help!
  13. Hi All I'm currently decided between two schools. School A is #4 in my field (social sciences) offered more funding and the faculty seems REALLY interested in wanting me attend. On the other hand School B is #7, but seems to be a better research fit. Should I choose ranking over fit? Will it really affect me for future job prospects? Thanks
  14. I don't think it's rude to ask if you have competing offers. My problem is, that I'm torn between schools so I don't WHO to ask and I'm not sure it's okay to ask all schools for money without seeming like a douche if I don't attend their school after all
  15. Hello All, Like most of you, I am considering offers from several schools. I narrowed my choices down to three schools all of which that offered some funding. After speaking with several students and former professors, It was suggested that I ask for more money. (All of my schools of interests are out of state). I was wondering what is the proper etiquette in doing so? Who do I contact? What do I say? Sorry for all the questions, Thanks!
  16. Does anybody have any thoughts on UMSL? I'm visiting them next week- I feel like nobody ever talks about them lol
  17. I have. Not sure if they have a waitlist or not.
  18. I also was accepted to UCI and 18k is a very tight budget for California. Your looking at, at least $1,000 a month for a room (a very small room) this doesn't include utilities, groceries, laundry, pocket money, or if you have any pets etc. I think your best option would be living in grad housing which would be somewhat cheaper. I personally, refuse to live on campus because I'm used to living on my own. Cost of living is something definitely to consider. Where 18k might be pretty tight for UCI, I was also accepted to UMSL where 18k is pretty fair for a decent apartment. Unfortunately for me, funding is very important seeing that I applied to schools all out of state (NY). I don't want to be at the "best" school yet worrying about bills to pay. Feel free to PM me if you like!
  19. Hi all, I too have applied for CJ programs for the Fall 2015 cycle. I do NOT necessarily want to be a professor but would like to generate policy driven research. I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs that seemed more geared towards policy/research rather than academia? Thanks so much!
