Hi. Thanks a lot for the responsible. Given your suggestions, the 1 bedroom or studio seem off the table. I will try to look for a bedroom in a shared apartment but with private bathroom. I don't know why apartments in NYC don't have private bathroom for each bedroom.

Hey. Can some one tell me if it is possible to a studio apartment/ 1 bed apartment in brooklyn for something between 1000-1200. Also is it advisable to spend 1200 on housing if my stipend is around 2700. thanks

You can get a room in a shared apartment in Queens / Brooklyn for 600-800. As you are international hence you should have a trusted friend in NYC who could go and visit the place before you rent it. Follow the proper guide to save yourself from the scams if you are an international student and will only be entering US in August.

Also what budget should I have if I plan on living in brooklyn in a studio apartment alone.

Hi I will be moving in NYC from outside US this fall. Hence I will have to find and finalize an apartment before I actually move in US. Can some one tell me how to avoid pitfalls in this situation. Also I have been looking at craigslist. Can some one explain to me about how much the broker fee is or an estimate of it. thanks

Depends alot on the housing rent ... There are shared places which you can get for ~$600 at minimum, and then you can get 1 bedrooms from 1200 and onwards... 2600 means a little over 2000 per month... So yes 26k can work. You might even be able to save a couple of hundred if you spend wisely.

I would say, go to Cornell... you already know people in Michigan, so going to Cornell will increase your social circle with the professors. This will help you when you go to industry/academia as you will have lots of people to vouch for you... moreover if you have strong ties with proff. at Michigan , you can always undertake projects with him even if you are not in his research group... also, believe me, once you are bored with one place/ city it starts effecting your work aswell... so make a fresh start at Cornell..

The thing is that when you apply, you already have this vague ranking of different universities in your mind... so just choose the university which is top of your ranking

So its been 10 days since the first round of decisions are out for my top choice university and I havent received any response. This implies that I am either waitlisted or rejected. The day before the first round of decisions were released, my homepage was visited by someone from the same university, which maybe implies that my application did reach the final stage. The question I want to ask is that is it fine to contact my POI and ask him to maybe contact my recommenders or have a short interview with me if he is still looking for a student and has any doubts about my application? please help. thanks in advance

From my experience universities assign IDs to ease their process of documents assembling. So that might be irrelevant from whether or not the decision has been made in your favour. On the other hand if they have specifically asked for official transcript, it does imply that you have passed most if not all the bars required to get admission. So either your application is in the final stage or you have been accepted. There is also this policy of some universities to send out official acceptance only when they have received your official transcript, so that also implies that you most probably would have been accepted.

I think I should have been more specific when I used the word best. Here I am not referring to being best as on paper, which I certainly am not. What I am trying to say is that there are several things which cannot be gauged based on paper proof, like motivation, life experience, goodwill (probably shouldn't have written that)... in those things I fell like I am the best candidate and I am sure many of you would feel the same (obviously not about me, but about yourselves) :-)

Just want opinion from you guys. Does anyone else here overestimate themselves or is it just me.
