Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy I was able to offer you the opportunity to be unpleasant.

Yeah, you should be outraged! You are right that it's "utterly ridiculous."
What a relief you are so smart and cunning to detect such a fraudulent scam. How dare a program ask for a deposit to save a seat for an applicant that is accepted.
Don't all schools know that everyone who is accepted into a program will automatically attend? It's not as if applicants apply to multiple schools and many get more than one offer.
Yes, you should definitely complain to the graduate school. They need to be admonished and rebuked for their greediness and for this ridiculous and absurd request. They probably won't rescind your offer of admission and instead will reimburse you and offer you free tuition. Don't they know how lucky they are to have you attend their program? So yes, they should fully fund you and heck, compensate you for your initial application too!
Hurry before it's too late. Complain and protest immediately!

Update: I have removed myself from the alternate list at Vanderbilt, as I've been accepted to U of Toronto's direct entry Ph.D. in English... I really, really hope this helps someone out!

It's probably a good idea to start out a bit more professional, but by the end of the semester I'm in jeans, a t-shirt and a cardigan.

I just visited Princeton last weekend, they showed us dorms at the new and old grad college. The old grad college seems to have a lot more rooms that require you to walk through someone else's room to get to. They seem to be comparable in price, and neither have air conditioning.
The apartments are probably a lot cheaper than the dorms because they aren't as nice - but they are typical apartments. If you've lived in a flat near a college campus, it's probably very similar to Lawrence apartments.
I'm torn between wanting to live in the OGC and trying to get an apartment.. On the one hand, having a meal plan would be convenient for the first year course load. On the other hand, air conditioning...

GC contracts are for 10 months, you can get a summer contract or you can decide not to (e.g. if you are away for an internship). Apartment contracts are for the whole year (July to the end of June), per https://hres.princeton.edu/graduates/my-housing/your-contract

To respond to kosmo's question about the "residency requirement"-- I think there is something in the official graduate school rules about having to live in the Princeton area the whole time, but my understanding is that this is enforced on a department to department basis, if at all. In my department, living outside of the immediate area for part of the program is not unheard of, so long as you turn up when you're needed. I certainly wouldn't worry about leaving during the summer.

Hi all, I have an offer from Vanderbilt, and I will most likely decline in mid-March (or earlier). I'm saying most likely because I currently hold an offer from Princeton (Politics) and the only reason why I haven't declined Vanderbilt is because my partner has also applied there (for a different field). In the event that my partner lands an offer from there, I *might* consider going there, but even then, it is unlikely simply because the research fit is not as good as Princeton. So bottom line is, it is highly likely that I will decline Vanderbilt. I'm sorry that I can't give a more committed response at the moment but I just thought I'd let people on the waitlist know that it's not completely hopeless; and I will be sure to act as soon as my circumstances become clear in mid-March, instead of dragging this painful process on for everyone.

I will most likely decline UIUC and Queen's in early March. Still waiting to hear from Michigan, Stanford and Cornell, after which I will probably also decline Vanderbilt. The school I'm most likely to be attending is Princeton, Dept. of Politics (I do political philosophy).
