  1. When I was an applicant two years ago, I made quite a few friends during campus visits, and in the end most of us chose the highest ranked programs that admitted us, and it turned out that all programs make empty promises during recruitment. I'm not saying "fit" is less important. It's just that at this stage, there is no way you can know how that part of your grad school will work out, so pivot on indicators with less uncertainty.

This point is really important. For some programs, as has been mentioned already, it will be impossible to make a definitive judgment based on ranking systems. Your decision, therefore, should take into account other factors like recent hires, faculty in other departments whose work might converge with your interests in some way, the receptivity of your POIs to your work, etc. For all the noise out there about the dominance of a small cadre of elite institutions in faculty hiring, I am one who still believes fit is an incredibly important downpayment on your academic career. Go where you grow!

  2. New to this thread! But I thought I'd join in on the waiting game. I applied to PhD programs in Political Science (one Combined PhD program in Poli Sci and AfAm).

Interests are in political philosophy, African American political philosophy in particular, especially 19th and 20th century AfAm democratic intellectuals (Du Bois, Douglass, David Walker, Baldwin, King, etc).

Hopefully this process will be over soon. The waiting stinks.

  3. Hi!

I am am an international applicant new to this thread. So far I got rejected at Stanford, NYU, Columbia and UCSD, and waitlisted at Northwestern.

I wrote the department asking about my chances to get in/ranking on the waitlist, but  no response so far. Did anyone else get waitlisted at NW, or got accepted and is likely to end up going somewhere else?

Also applied at Yale and MIT, I heard that decisions are coming this week :)

I'm a PT applicant. Just declined my offer at Northwestern. Hope this helps.

  4. Did your portal announcement change or was it only the email? Thanks and congrats!! :)

Virginia extended offers to those up for a fellowship. That's only 5 or 6. That's all I can speak to w/ certainty. I'm guessing more will follow very soon??? Contact has been through DGS and theorists in the Dept. No status updates on the website though. My letter came via DGS.

  5. Just got curious, what is the likelihood of getting an acceptance email by mistake?

Doesn't seem very likely for PhD programs. Perhaps for Masters or for programs with larger cohorts than the PhD. But given the fact that many programs accept initially by way of a POI and then officially through DGS or an admissions committee member, I don't see it happening.

  6. Congrats! I am not sure whether you ever visited the campus or not, but it is gorgeous. Besides the academic reputation and obvious qualifications, it is just in a great spot of West Los Angeles. My brother actually works for the Law School's Williams Institute in a managerial position - do not wish to disclose his name for privacy reasons - and I have had many chances to see the campus for myself.

If my interests were more aligned with their program I would have applied there myself. But, after careful consideration, I was not a good fit. So, with that said, I am assured that you will love it here! :)

Spent the summer in LA the last two years. I am JUST about sold  :)

  7. Hey everybody! I'm a bit late to the game here, but I'm also applying this cycle for theory / history of political thought.

Ancient and early modern political philosophy is my jam; much of my undergrad work was on Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon on the ancient side, and Machiavelli, Bacon, and Descartes on the early modern side. I'm fascinated by what one might call the origins of modernity and the "modern proejct" — what it is, how it came to be, how it is related to what came before it, etc.

NMLogan — congrats on the Chicago admit! It is quite the program, so far as I can tell.

Facade19 — without pigeonholing myself too much, I'll say that I am very sympathetic to your description of political esotericism. Are you hoping to study one of your "triumphant triumvirate" in detail? Or look at themes consistent among them?

theoristo — congrats on the Northwestern admit! If I may ask: who are you hoping to work with at Yale?

    Garsten or Shapiro.

  8. Nice to meet you, theoristo, and glad the cycle is treating you well!  I hope we hear from UCLA officially over the next few days...should be sometime next week, at least.  I'm also looking for programs that take questions of race seriously; my own focus is on South African legal theory and culture.

    Good luck with it all!

Chicago is certainly one of those programs. And I hear Markell is among the best as far as mentors go. Who are you interested in working with at UCLA?

  9. New to the forum but it appears you folks are well on your way. The season has been rewarding for me, as well. I'm a Northwestern admit. And it appears that UW Seattle and UCLA are very promising, though nothing is official yet. We will see what comes of Cornell, UVA, and Yale. My broad interests are in History of Political Thought (Modern to Contemporary), with particular interest in questions of race and domination. Lately, I've been working through Dewey and Du Bois.

Hoping the good news will keep rolling in. :)
