  1. I'm an Americanist and haven't heard...what were the subfields of the international students who claimed to have been waitlisted and accepted?
  2. I applied and also haven't heard anything up to this point. What's your subfield?
  3. Any veracity to the Cornell decisions? Has anyone claimed any of the acceptances or rejections from the results search?
  4. My Northwestern page still doesn't have a link...I'm still just assuming I'm rejected, that way I'll be falling a shorter distance. Figuratively, of course.
  5. You're in CA polecon? Going to Coachella? Do you plan to hike down the Appalachian to Tennessee for Bonnaroo?
  6. Anyone step forward with their shiny acceptances to Cornell? At this point, I'm thinking they are real, just wondering why no one has decided to come forward to be showered in congratulations.
  7. I second that suggestion.
  8. If I don't get into any of the programs I applied to (which is seeming more and more likely), or if I get accepted somewhere without funding, then I will just prepare all summer for applications next fall. Retake the GRE, revamp my SOP, read as much PoliSci literature as possible, and then try again next fall. Oh well...
  9. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Cornell and Penn are hoaxes. Cornell seems incredibly unlikely after all of Tina Slater's very specific emails. Not so sure about Penn though...
  10. Just wanted so congratulate those of you who were accepted at Berkeley today! For the rest of us who are still waiting (I haven't heard anything from any of the schools I applied to, but I'm assuming I'm rejected at Northwestern), try to relax, do some reading, go to the gym, and just get your mind off of the entire process. I know it's easier said than done, especially when you see decisions rolling in from school that you applied at, but there really is very little we can do besides wait. Best of luck to everyone--I hope that we all end up at great institutions doing excellent research for the next 5-7 years, meeting each other at conferences, publishing papers, and joining the dog-eat-dog world of academia.
  11. I doubt we'll hear from Cornell this week. Tina Slater has sent out several emails stating that all decisions (acceptances and rejections) will not be out until March. Maybe some individual professors will notify some of their potential advisees, but I doubt we will hear anything official from Cornell until March. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
  12. I'm most excited to hear from Cornell, Brandeis, and Syracuse. The prospect of being able to work with people like Martin Shefter, Richard Bensel, and Elizabeth Sanders gets me far more excited than it really should, especially since I probably won't get in. Oh well, here's to long shots!
  13. I started undergrad as a History/Sec. Ed major, then added PoliSci minor, then dropped education and became a double major in History and PoliSci If I had to do it over again I would have done History/PoliSci double major and an Econ minor. I would like to do more historical/qualitative research (hence my history background), but I wish I had taken more econ/stats classes just to have more of a background in quant methods. No use living in the past though.
  14. In terms of your question about teaching something that you can't stand--it can be helpful to teach something you don't like just to be a more marketable job candidate. One of my profs teaches methods courses and she can't stand it, but her ability to teach methods is one of the main reasons she got a job at my institution (according to her). It may not be too bad, you would prob only have to teach an intro course and maybe an upper-level every few semesters, depending on where you end up and what your teaching/research requirements are.
  15. Fair Game - I'm also interested in the role of new media in elections and also the way media and candidacy interact (i.e. how media plays a role in deciding what types of issues are most important, and how they guide/force candidates to focus on certain issues that may seem more or less important). If you don't mind sharing, what schools did you apply to?
  16. Seems like a lot of Theory folks accepted at Northwestern, maybe the Americanists are tomorrow ...C'mon Ben Page!
  17. Congrats to the Northwestern acceptances! One of my LOR writers just finished up at Northwestern about 6 years ago or so (he's also a big fan of Foucalt!), I'm sure those who go will thoroughly enjoy their experience.
  18. I think your bets are pretty good, SuddenlyParanoid. I hope we hear from Yale especially. I want to get my first rejection out of the way so I'll know how it feels when the rest of my decisions start coming in.
  19. I find the Harvard acceptance hard to believe. I think said individual would love to share that fact with others, but it seems more likely that he/she is trying to get a rise out of us PoliSci folks, since this discipline is one of the most active on the GradCafe forums. If I'm wrong, then my sincerest congrats to you, anonymous Harvard acceptance!
  20. I second the surprise about the lack of Americanists. I'm shocked to see so many theory folks. There are very few students at my undergrad institution who are really into theory.
  21. Many congrats to you! Thanks for offering some hope for those of us with bad/mediocre GRE scores (even though you're in a different field).
  22. As admissions and rejections begin to roll in, how are you going to approach the next few weeks? I've been trying hard not to think about how great it would be if I get accepted to either of my top two choices, as I really don't want to set myself up for (probable) rejection. I keep telling myself to expect only one acceptance (expecting zero would defeat the purpose of applying entirely), that way the rejections won't seem so bad. This is not to say that I don't hold out some hope, for without hope and something to strive for, what would be the purpose of living? I just try to squelch my hope with reality.
  23. Got another email this morning, seems to have just reiterated what readeatsleep said: --- All applicant decisions ---- refusals or acceptances are not made until sometime in March. February is going to be a loooonng month (ironically).
  24. According to the results page from last year, they had 350 applicants and the cohort was 12. Eek!
  25. Got the same email as cpaige this afternoon. Even though Cornell is my top choice, I do not expect to get in, but I think that Tina will make the rejection a little better. Even her mass emails are just so friendly in tone.
