  1. Just got another acceptance in this morning from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Funding decisions to follow, but pretty exciting to get in to a Canadian school (that tends to fully fund all students) as an American. Anyone want to claim the University of Arizona acceptance? Haven't heard anything from them and I'm hoping it's going out in waves...
  2. Fantastic! Thank you for that insight! I was trying to find anything online about job placements/ranking and couldn't find anything (probably because STS is so new a field?).
  3. Just got an email from the Chair at ASU's Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology (HSD) program! First acceptance! Anyone know a lot about STS programs or about this school? I applied on a whim.
  4. I saw IU rejections up on the board. I applied as well but haven't received anything yet. Do they usually go in waves? I always thought that most of the time acceptances go out first. This whole damn process is nerve wracking as hell.
  5. I wish I had some info too. Seeing interview requests go out for UCI, WashU, and now MIT is just depressing me.
  6. Congrats! A friend of mine at WUSTL let me know I wasn't on the list. I guess 7 people were invited for in-person interviews with several more schedule for Skype interviews. I guess they were wanting to get more medical anth and anthros focused on Islam this year—bad timing for me!
  7. No idea. I have been in email contact with my POI and had a Skype conversation with them. I haven't heard anything from Irvine yet either, though.
  8. Congrats! I wonder if they send the interview emails out all at once or if they trickle in depending on who your POI was...
  9. I'm looking at the social imaginaries of outer space and how they are shifting from exploration to exploitation as the United States shifts from a nationalist, state-based past to a venture capitalist future. I also theorize that these venture capitalists are viewing outer space as the site of primitive accumulation. I use a lot of decolonization theory and analyze how the language surrounding outer space use frontier and colonial discourse. I've talked to Valerie Olson at Irvine since she also works in outer space and she seemed excited about the kind of work I'd like to do. I'm not entirely attached to outer space (although I'd like to continue my MA work) but would definitely like to delve into futurist discourse, nostalgia, and utopianism. Your work on Twitch sounds really interesting! Online communities have always been interesting to me—I utilized them as a field site for this thesis.
  10. I feel both of your pain. I write a few sentences in my thesis, check email for Irvine invite, write a few sentences, check email for Irvine invite. Vicious cycle!
  11. My thesis draft is due to my committee on Feb 3rd. Hoping to get it done before that though because I would like to defend in early April after getting back from the SfAAs. Anyone else going?
  12. I'm in the same boat with my thesis writing. It felt like putting the cart before the horse when I had to stop writing my thesis to get PhD apps in but now I'm back into the writing groove. By the way, I lovingly ripped off your signature; I hope you don't mind!
  13. I'm sorry that's happening :/ I emailed UCI a CV, writing sample, and my unofficial transcripts on November 3rd and didn't hear anything for a few days, so I had to email again to confirm they had received everything on November 9th. They emailed me back and said it was received but this was before I formally submitted my application. I hope everything was uploaded to my application...but I haven't heard anything from UCI so I'm hoping that's a good thing if they had emailed you about an incomplete application.
  14. Same here! I'm in the odd calm before the storm. Although it helps that I'm spending 10 hours a day writing my MA thesis. I think that will help me tamper the crippling anxiety of waiting for decision letters...
  15. Just wanted to pop in and say that I just send my last application in tonight! Other than the LOR reminder emails, I begin the Long Wait.
  16. Just sent in my last December 1st deadline application! Onto the December 15th deadlines!
  17. Just finished with my GRE. 157 verbal, 147 quant. Not the greatest but better than my practice tests. Anyone have insights on these scores re: what admissions committees will think?
  18. Thanks for the support everyone! This community is great. I haven't asked about any kind of testing accommodations but I wouldn't assume the GRE would have very much. And honestly, I get testing anxiety sitting in my house taking the practice tests and that's about as accommodating and one could ever hope for. A couple faculty members I have spoken to have said that the GRE is only a factor of your entire app that they look at and does not dictate whether or not one gets accepted. However, it still has be worrying. What do you all think about adding a blurb about testing anxiety in my Statement of Purpose? I've asked one of my letter writers (my Chair and advisor) to stress my competence at research and graduate success (I'm in an MA program now, currently at a 4.0) despite my GRE scores. Do you think that's enough or should I mention it in my application?
  19. Just wanting to vent really quick... I take the GRE on the 10th and I've been really stressing about it because despite all of my studying, I'm still scoring pretty low (high 140s, low 150s on verbal; 130s on quant) on each due to testing anxiety. I have peer reviewed publications, solid research experience, working for an academic journal and TAing, and have been in conversation with most of my POIs who seem interested in what I want to do. I just don't want the GREs to screw me. I know it has a lot to do with departmental culture and whether they hold any stock in scores but I'm still feeling pretty depressed about the whole process. I know I'm probably not alone in this so I just wanted to share my frustrations. It's hard to be preparing for the GRE, writing my thesis, keeping up with coursework and working two jobs.
  20. Hey all, I was here in 2015 applying to MA programs and now I'm back for the PhD season! I recognize a few names and I'm ready to suffer again with those who were in the same MA cycle as me.
  21. Congrats on Virginia Tech! We can continue this horrible and wonderful application experience together in 2 years!
  22. Just heard that I got a tuition waiver at NAU so I'm formally accepting admission there! Pretty cool for a terminal Master's program. Here's to not having to stress anymore (until 2017 PhD season).
  23. NAU is supposed to make their funding decisions tomorrow afternoon so hopefully I will know about that soon. At this point, after my rejection from UMass, I think the MA program at NAU is my only really smart choice. I'm a resident of AZ so the tuition is lower (so I hope that's attractive for funding), especially when comparing to unfunded schools in England! My POI said that he really wanted to work on me and will be trying to get me at LEAST a tuition waiver...at best a GA, obviously. Crossing my fingers!
  24. I've got a question along these lines... I didn't take the GRE. I've accepted admission into an MA program already. When I go to apply for the PhD in 2017, will I need to take the GRE or will my graduate degree grant me a GRE waiver? I really don't want to have to worry about taking the GRE while working on my thesis...
  25. Just got a call from NAU and got accepted in their MA program! I guess they are meeting next week about funding. He said there wasn't a lot but I could minimally get a tuition waiver so that's pretty good (especially since it is a terminal MA program). If I go there I'll be back here in 2017 for the PhD applications!
