I share an apt. with two other people right now and I pay a total of $290/month (not including utilities). I have a feeling I'm never, ever going to experience this kind of cheap living again. (I'm in Lawrence, KS)

FYI people, I just spoke with Leah Rosenberg from Florida and she says they're admitting 18 people total. I don't know how many of their MA students are going to stick around, but that seemed like good news to me. Also, that's not counting MFA (they're admitting 12 to that, separate from the 18) Also, thanks to everyone who responded to my certificate issue. Leah Rosenberg at least said they didn't care.

It says "expected" on my CV and I did mention in my letter of intent. ACK.

I have a question, people. I have gotten myself in over my head, like way over my head in this graduate level political science class I'm taking as the last course for a grad certificate in Women's Studies. I really want to drop it, like so so very badly. But if I did, I wouldn't get my certificate. Would PhD programs rescind their offers if I didn't have this certificate in Women's Studies to go along with my MA in lit?

I probably shouldn't have applied to so many places, waste of money, but I really had no idea whether or not I'd get in anywhere. I feel like my professors have not given me any kind of indication of whether or not they think my work is any good.

I emailed yesterday asking if all acceptances and waitlists had already gone out and they are ignoring me

Accepted to University of Florida. I think. Weird circumstances, though. I got an email referring to the voicemail she left me, but I have no voicemail. I'm a little nervous they might have made a mistake and I'm not accepted at all! But we shall see I guess.

That is high, and I'm aware I'm going to poor, but it's cheaper than my hometown so I'm going to just grin and bear it. That is if I end up there.

No. Grrrr. People, if you don't want to go to Chapel Hill, for the love of Caroline's sanity and dewy complexion, please turn down their offer. (Especially if you're C 19 American hehehe) This is giving me stress wrinkles. I need to stop complaining though because I have a bitchin' offer from Austin.

Thanks for the kind words! I actually turned Oregon down today. The program sounds great, though, and I think there's still hope. I'm also not sure she's finished notifying students. I will be hoping so hard for you to get in! I'm 19th C American, lots of Asian American stuff and place and space studies, so I think they might be accepting another. Also, allplaideverything got accepted to Oregon and might know more than I do.

I got my MA at KU and went to undergrad at U.SC. I'd be happy to answer any questions if you have them.

I think the publication issue varies widely according to student ability. Some are ready, some aren't. That said, I don't think readiness to publish at the early MA level is necessarily a precursor to success. Some people fizzle. Some have hit the peak of their abilities, and some keep excelling. But some who weren't ready when they started completely transform themselves and end up on top. All this to say, in a round about way, don't compare yourself to your buddies. Also, don't believe people who brag about how fab their writing is until you read it. Also, if you do want to publish at the MA level don't send your work out to a top journal unless your mentor has assured you it's ready. Otherwise, you might get crushed by the rejection and reader's notes. You're welcome for all the unsolicited ramblings
