I haven't heard back from SSHRC yet but am curious - does anyone know how successful letters are worded at the beginning? Do they begin with a "we are pleased to inform you..." or a "congratulations..." and what does an unsuccessful letter begin with?

Haha, good, keeping the physical proof of my failure last year is good for something. So, unsuccessful (but waitlist) letter starts like:

Dear NAME: I am writing on behalf of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to advise you of the outcome of your application to the 2017 Doctoral Awards competition. I regret to inform your that your application was not among those award funding this year's competition. Although the Council is not able to offer you an award at this time, your application was deemed of high enough quality for your name to be placed on a waiting list... blah blah blah information about scoring/my score

  2. I have it too. Not to discourage anyone - but I don’t think it means anything to see the option to apply for the supplement.

I’m pretty sure I had it last year too and I was waitlisted. So, don’t take it too seriously if it’s not there.

Also: in terms of research - there is literally no way I can do my research anywhere but a very small specific area of Canada, so I don’t think that it matters if you specified regions outside of Canada either.

  3. I'm in the process of deciding what few things I have room in a suitcase to bring. It's quite the challenge.

I go between excitement and fear about moving across the country. But, it will be nice to reinvent myself.

I've been told by a current Toronto grad that leases usually start on the first of the month. If I'm hoping to have a place for September, how early should I start looking? I'll be working in Europe until the second week of August so the timing is pretty tight but I could of course keep an eye out online (though my experience of flat hunting in European cities is that you really need to visit...).

What are the best ways to find fellow grads looking to flatshare (I found both of my last two flatshares through postings on university Facebook groups)?

    Thanks!

Let me know if you figure something out for finding people. Grad house is my first choice, but I'm totally wary of likely needing a different plan.

  5. I assume no one has heard from SHHRC CGS M at UBC? I'm suprised they would not announce on the first day to remain competitive with other offers.

I received an offer and declined.

  6. I don't think you can conclude anything from it. I've only had my status updated at the schools I should not have a chance at (two that I didn't end up applying to, one that I declined an offer from).

Pretty much right after this I got an email and 3/4 of my schools are updated.

    Now the waiting.

Hoping that they make it available at midnight EST... Means I might find out at 9:00PM here on the West Coast :3

  7. Lore, I was wondering if your email was from the graduate program you applied to or from Graduate and Postdoctoral studies at UBC?

It was the program itself. I think they were just trying to recruit me by saying that I had a shot at it. (I declined them already though.)

  8. My friends and I have all gotten emails saying our status has changed at many different schools. I've gotten 3 emails so far saying my stats was updated... for 3 different schools. I seriously doubt that means we have recieved the award at all these places. I'm pretty sure it is just the committee made a decision either way. There are only so many CGS to go around, and by how many people I know who have recieved emails I do not think you can interpret it either way.

I'm SSHRC and I haven't got any of these. (Though I really just care about U of T...)

    Ugh. Good luck everyone <3

  9. Hey,

Has anyone received an offer of funding from Toronto?

I don't know how it works at Canadian universities, but my POI emailed me to say I'd been made an offer (PhD Medieval Studies) but I haven't heard anything official yet. That was two weeks ago and he said I'd receive something in the week following the conversation we had.

I should probably email someone about this, shouldn't I...

Sigh. They don't make it easy, do they?

Toronto is a little different with funding, I believe. I know that there is a guarantee of at least 15K + tuition (unless you have external funding and then you don't get as much from the university).

I would assume that if they have not told you otherwise, it's around this? They also might want to know if you have SSHRC or OGS before giving you specific numbers.

It does not hurt to ask though. Mention that you would like that information because it factors into your decision. Additionally, hol tight for the letter. I received an admission email two weeks before receiving the actual letter (though funding is not detailed in it).

  10. thanks for letting us know. My problem is I only have till March 6th to reply to York's offer or it will be rescinded and I don't think OISE admissions would have come by then. Don't know what to do!!!

You could email and explain that you have a deadline and are curious what the current timeline looks like because you wanted to hear from that school before making the decision.

I had an early deadline and did this. I got a positive "hang tight" with an acceptance the next day from one school and no reply from the other.

Definitely didn't go badly. Just email and be super polite and don't go into too many details.

  11. As for Canadian PhD programs, neither McGill nor UBC requires you to submit the GRE score.

Good to know. So, ostensibly, I could try the GRE and if I don't do well, just apply places that don't need it?

(By the way, thank you everyone for the answers and advice!)

  12. So, I'm looking at a one year MA program for Fall 2015 and therefore think that I will be applying to a PhD program for Fall 2016. I have not needed to take the GRE thus far to apply to the Canadian universities for the MA programs, but I was wondering if many schools require it in the states for Linguistics.

A quick glance at several programs shows that many linguistics departments do not require the GRE (and I have yet to decide where I would like to apply for a PhD). If I do need to do the GRE though, I would rather start now and get it out of the way before starting graduate school in Fall.

In your experience, did many of the programs you applied to need a GRE score? I'm looking at good programs, in both the US and Canada, with a focus on historical or sociolinguistics.

  13. ^ I can sort of speak to Toronto. It's extremely gay (male) friendly, and there is also a pretty active lesbian community. I only go there every few months for a lesbian or queer lady night, and it's always packed. The few times I've visited U of T, I've instantly spotted queer women. A pansexual female friend of mine went to U of T for undergrad and she quickly developed an extended queer community.

    That sounds pretty positive. Thanks!

  14. Bumping this again as I've just been offered acceptance at my first choice (U of T).

I've applied for Grad House as of today, but I'm wondering if that is too late to get a spot? (Though, I put shared room as a preference because I'm cheap.) Also, I'm curious what nightlife is like in the area and whether anyone can give me any comparisons of what Toronto is like in comparison to Vancouver?

Also, are there any good sushi places? (I'm spoiled by growing up on the westcoast.)

  15. I had the same experience! I'm also on the west coast (UVic) and applied only to European programs, so I always wake up in the morning hopeful to see something in my inbox (since their 9-5 is our midnight to 8am!). But I actually did have the experience of being buzzed awake by an email at 3am that turned out to be an acceptance letter, which totally made up for it.  :D Fingers crossed for you!

I got an acceptance at a totally normal hour (during work), so that was awesome. And congrats to you :)

  16. Did it start off saying "forwarded for review" and then move to "file forwarded to department"? Just wondering since I'm checking my UVic page constantly!

Didn't see that stage, so you may be further along than I am? I have a friend who emailed the department asking about the timeline two days ago and has not gotten a response. I am assuming that they have a generally later timeline for offers?

  17. I wouldn't say its an almost acceptance just yet! I don't want to jinx my application! LOL. Also, my UVic application says "forwarded for review." Not sure where in the process that puts my application though. I found this link that kind of explains the process... Hope it helps!

    Oh, helpful!

Yeah, my UVic one is "file forwarded to department". But, I have deadlines coming up for my acceptances and I am not holding out hope that I will hear back, given that there are basically no results since January on the Results Search page. Oh well.
