  1. Haha, good, keeping the physical proof of my failure last year is good for something. So, unsuccessful (but waitlist) letter starts like: Dear NAME: I am writing on behalf of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to advise you of the outcome of your application to the 2017 Doctoral Awards competition. I regret to inform your that your application was not among those award funding this year's competition. Although the Council is not able to offer you an award at this time, your application was deemed of high enough quality for your name to be placed on a waiting list... blah blah blah information about scoring/my score
  2. I have it too. Not to discourage anyone - but I don’t think it means anything to see the option to apply for the supplement. I’m pretty sure I had it last year too and I was waitlisted. So, don’t take it too seriously if it’s not there. Also: in terms of research - there is literally no way I can do my research anywhere but a very small specific area of Canada, so I don’t think that it matters if you specified regions outside of Canada either.
  3. Have you looked into anything that might use whatever volunteer stuff you have? My understanding is that most speech-path prospective students have done some amount of work with populations that they might interact with and that could be applied to getting a job working with people in some kind of leadership/tutoring/care role.
  4. I'm in the process of deciding what few things I have room in a suitcase to bring. It's quite the challenge. I go between excitement and fear about moving across the country. But, it will be nice to reinvent myself.

Let me know if you figure something out for finding people. Grad house is my first choice, but I'm totally wary of likely needing a different plan.

    CGS-M 2015-2016

I received an offer and declined.

    CGS-M 2015-2016

AH. I can't even deal with this right now. I got offers from three schools (and no decision from the fourth) for SSHRC, even though I've already declined admissions offers from two of the schools.

    CGS-M 2015-2016

Pretty much right after this I got an email and 3/4 of my schools are updated. Now the waiting. Hoping that they make it available at midnight EST... Means I might find out at 9:00PM here on the West Coast :3

    CGS-M 2015-2016

I haven't received a single email about my status being updated. I'll assume that's a bad thing?

    CGS-M 2015-2016

It was the program itself. I think they were just trying to recruit me by saying that I had a shot at it. (I declined them already though.)

I'm SSHRC and I haven't got any of these. (Though I really just care about U of T...) Ugh. Good luck everyone <3
  12. Toronto is a little different with funding, I believe. I know that there is a guarantee of at least 15K + tuition (unless you have external funding and then you don't get as much from the university). I would assume that if they have not told you otherwise, it's around this? They also might want to know if you have SSHRC or OGS before giving you specific numbers. It does not hurt to ask though. Mention that you would like that information because it factors into your decision. Additionally, hol tight for the letter. I received an admission email two weeks before receiving the actual letter (though funding is not detailed in it).
  13. I met Hayley Williams of Paramore and she said that I had a pretty smile. That was really cool. Oh, and Margaret Atwood replied to one of my tweets. (Though, alas, I have never met her though I have heard her talk live.)

I'll be 22 in Fall when I start my MA
  15. Different programs have different timelines. You should check in the Criminology and Criminal Justice subforum, you may find more specfic information about those programs.
  16. You could email and explain that you have a deadline and are curious what the current timeline looks like because you wanted to hear from that school before making the decision. I had an early deadline and did this. I got a positive "hang tight" with an acceptance the next day from one school and no reply from the other. Definitely didn't go badly. Just email and be super polite and don't go into too many details.
  17. Good to know. So, ostensibly, I could try the GRE and if I don't do well, just apply places that don't need it? (By the way, thank you everyone for the answers and advice!)
  18. Ugh. I'll get on that then. (The Q is going to kill me.)
  19. So, I'm looking at a one year MA program for Fall 2015 and therefore think that I will be applying to a PhD program for Fall 2016. I have not needed to take the GRE thus far to apply to the Canadian universities for the MA programs, but I was wondering if many schools require it in the states for Linguistics. A quick glance at several programs shows that many linguistics departments do not require the GRE (and I have yet to decide where I would like to apply for a PhD). If I do need to do the GRE though, I would rather start now and get it out of the way before starting graduate school in Fall. In your experience, did many of the programs you applied to need a GRE score? I'm looking at good programs, in both the US and Canada, with a focus on historical or sociolinguistics.

Bumping this again as I've just been offered acceptance at my first choice (U of T). I've applied for Grad House as of today, but I'm wondering if that is too late to get a spot? (Though, I put shared room as a preference because I'm cheap.) Also, I'm curious what nightlife is like in the area and whether anyone can give me any comparisons of what Toronto is like in comparison to Vancouver? Also, are there any good sushi places? (I'm spoiled by growing up on the westcoast.)
  21. I got an acceptance at a totally normal hour (during work), so that was awesome. And congrats to you
  22. Didn't see that stage, so you may be further along than I am? I have a friend who emailed the department asking about the timeline two days ago and has not gotten a response. I am assuming that they have a generally later timeline for offers?
  23. Oh, helpful! Yeah, my UVic one is "file forwarded to department". But, I have deadlines coming up for my acceptances and I am not holding out hope that I will hear back, given that there are basically no results since January on the Results Search page. Oh well.
