  1. The lack of funding is not just a short sided view. In fact, when a program is willing to fund you they are also willing to support you in your long term pursuits. That means you have greater chances of publishing and being connected to a mentor, both of which are what get you a job in the end. If you go to a school just for the brand with no support you just end up getting lost in the shuffle and forgotten. Go where you have funding!
  2. Was admitted into the PhD program at GSU today. Currently finishing my MS at GSU so was not surprised. Stipend award was 18K. Not sure if I will accept the offer, I have several offers worth considering before accepting. PM me if you have questions about the school/program.
  3. What schools will you be turning down then? Congratulations are in order though, great job on that admit!
  4. The panel went really well! I was excited to have my panel so early when people were still motivated and not hungover. I am actually heading back before Saturday, but good luck! I felt the same though about the weather thing. Although, from everything I have heard the turnout and the general attitude observed at this ACJS seems to be typical according to the people I know that have been multiple times.
  5. I think it is also important to remember that funding is not everything. Yes, funding is a big factor, but if they are funding you and are showing commitment to mentoring you then the figure is purely short-term thinking. I am NOT suggesting that it is not important, please do not mistake me, but I would sacrifice a few $$ now for a better program that is committed to shaping me into a great scholar. In the long term the ranking, and skills learned will translate into better job offers and more $$ longterm. Once again, I am not saying go unfunded or at an extreme low ball offer, but a few thousand for a better fit, a better rank, and better mentorship may be worth it in the long run...just my personal opinion though.
  6. I presented today. When do you present? So far the conference has been good. I am submitting my abstract for ASC next week when I get back to campus. You?
  7. I am just waiting on University if Minnesota now. It is killing me!! I am confident that I will not get in, but need to hear it from them before I commit to any of the other programs that accepted me. If you guys have heard back yet please keep me posted.
  8. It's cool, me too! I even went down to the school (currently live in GA) and met the faculty. Seemed to match up perfect with research and scores were right on track with what they said they look for in accepting and funding students. Kinda bumbed, but I will live. Where else have you been accepted/funded?
  9. If you find one, pass that info along. That would be a great resource. =)
  10. The criminology and criminal just program at Georgia state university is in the Andrew Young school of policy studies, they may be a good fit.
  11. I wouldn't blame you. I have started that email a few times, but end up deleting the draft cause I have already asked once. If you do email them feel free to share what you hear back in a PM or on this forum, I am VERY interested!!!
  12. I wish. I emailed them on March 13 and they said that, "congratulations on getting accepted, and we likely will be making funding decisions in the next 10 days or so. Take care"....Obviously it has been longer than 10 days!!! I can't wait to hear what they say!!! Have you been in touch with them at all?
  13. I was having this discussion with my advisor at my current institution and he said that applications in criminology tend to take longer because of their rank in the college. All programs are taking applications the same time, but applications have to be processed by specific college administrators and therefore priority is given to more well known disciplines like economics, political science, sociology, etc. first. I don't think this phenomenon accounts for all of the delay, but seems to make a great deal of sense.
  14. I think you are right that it is hard to generalize because there is such a spectrum of outcomes at so many universities. That said, I have been been put on a waitlist for funding at a specific institution and told the amount I will be funded if/when a spot opens up. In my case it would be a fully funded assistantship, but no way to say if that is common or not. What school is this for?
