  1. Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard about that yet.
  2. Someone from UNC is probably more in the know than I am. But Jan Boxill was not fired (again, to the best of my knowledge) but she did step down/was removed from her place as the director of the Parr Center after the scandal. UNC then put out a job opening for someone in ethics for the purpose of having a new director of the Parr Center (so that Sayre-McCord isn't pulling double duty with both the Parr Center at the PPE minor). Shafer-Landau is fulfilling that role as director.
  3. What's the evidence that adcoms don't take the AWA seriously? I was given the advice that AWA is the most important/relevant section on the GRE (specifically for philosophy) AND that it is the least relevant/considered section.
  4. I'd honestly take the funded offer as well. That advice might change if there were more clear information (which Philosophy MA? What PhD programs? What are your areas of interest? etc) but it sounds like you're trying to keep some level of anonymity. (Also, I doubt this is relevant but: I wouldn't be surprised—and this is basically blind conjecture—if admissions committees weighed your education masters less than the GRE. They are not generally known for their rigor.)
  5. I will agree about Antichrist (probably just because I love von Trier). I think von Trier's Dogville presents a lot of philosophical(esque) problems as well, and is significantly less disturbing than Antichrist.
  6. I'll go ahead and join in too. I came from a generally unknown (though large) state school. Acceptance rate of about 70% with around 30,000 enrolled. Furthermore, the school has a reputation among some for being kind of silly given our unorthodox core requirement program (among other things). SLACs in the community refer to us as a community college. However, my philosophy department I think is quite strong though lacks prestige. That is, a lot of the professors came from good programs and have friends in PGR top 20, 10, and 5 programs, but they themselves don't have major clout with their publishing record (though some of that is changing). My GRE was also sub-par (159v, 152q, 5.0a) but I had a high (though not perfect) GPA. EDIT-I should probably add that my program does have a pretty good placement record though. We've sent multiple people to UW Milwaukee, at least one to Georgia State, at least one to University of Houston, at least one to Simon Fraser, one was at CUNY at some point (though I don't know if they went through an MA first), another got into all T7 MAs and then got accepted off the wait list at U Conn., one at Carnegie Mellon (Logic, Comp, and Methodology) and someone this year applying with me got into Boston University (their goal school).
  7. I'd definitely follow establishment's advice and go to WashU.
  8. Congrats! You leaning toward any program in particular?
  9. I wouldn't say planning on it. I'm leaning more toward UNC, but will be visiting both WashU and UNC in another week to make my final decision. Probabilistically speaking, I'll be withdrawing from WashU as long as no red flags appear at UNC.
  10. Accepted to Tufts as well. Will be withdrawing by the end of the day. And rejected from CUNY. Well, I'm all done!
  11. I haven't heard anything either. I'm assuming rejection. Maybe wait list, but most likely rejection.
  12. Can someone claim the CUNY wait lists?
  13. Agreed. Whoever made that post is being an ass.
  14. I don't remember a Columbia one. I thought it said UCLA (?) Was it the one that told "acceptance collectors" to stop stroking their ego? EDIT- I see the Columbia one now too. If it's the same person they need to give it a rest.
  15. Planning on declining my wait list offer. Won't do it immediately, probably in about a week or so. Just to not rush anything.
  16. Wait listed at Madison. Based on the email it seems they intentionally Accepted, then rejected, and are ending with the wait list notifications.
  17. I think it is incredibly odd. Georgetown, which for all intents and purposes I'm waitlisted at, has had multiple faculty emailing me offering conversations and so on. My other two acceptances have been very timely and forthcoming with information over email and offered to do phone or skype as well. (Not surprised by Wayne State though, they seem like a great group of people. Their Hume scholar Jonny Cottrell is one of the nicest people I've ever met.)
  18. Just double checked the listings. Nothing from Tufts or Brandeis this year, so I would not presume rejection. UCLA has already accepted students, though I'm not seeing wait lists, I'm guessing presuming rejection is accurate. Others may be able to say better. Congrats! (And on a Sunday, really?)
  19. I have not seen a single thing from Tufts on the results page. My guess is they have yet to sound out anything.
  20. There may need to be a conceptual analysis of what it is to be a troll. Often times being overtly non-offensive, presenting good, correct information but done so in a pedantic manner is extremely successful trolling behavior.
  21. No news here. Weird.
  22. Congrats!!
  23. Well... yeah. Rejecting applicants as they determine who is the best fit for their program/who they most like/what have you. Perhaps I should say, Notify all the people you know you're not going to accept when you know that you're not going to accept them.
  24. I talked about this with one of my profs and the procedure makes sense. Notify all the people you know you're not going to accept, so they know while you continue deliberating on who is the best.
  25. My bad. Jumped the gun there...
