  1. Same here regarding funding... My acceptance letter said that info about money would come out in the next couple weeks. I assume they'll have it to us by the first week of April, at the latest. Fingers crossed. It seems to me like there is a lot of funding available, at least, that's what the website made it sound like. I haven't talked to an UA student because I don't know any! Would love to though.
  2. I would like to know how big of a factor research is... it says on their website that students are "strongly encouraged" to complete a thesis. What does that mean? I have done research in the past and I know I am not a huge fan, so a strong emphasis would be a turn off for me. I'd also really like to know about the environment. Is it competitive? Relaxed? Are the students mega-stressed out? How accessible are faculty and advisors? Do students have to make appointments or is there an open-door policy? The last big thing is flexibility and practicum opportunities; for example, if I find a specific area that I'm really interested in, can I pursue it through electives and/or practicum placements, or are the degree plan and practicum placements more concrete for everyone?
  3. I'm currently finishing my undergrad at Emory. Parking isn't bad - there are several decks on main campus (Peavine, Fishburne, Michael Street, Oxford). Fishburne, Oxford, and Michael Street have visitor parking, and Peavine has a lot next to it for visitors. I have never had trouble finding parking. As for Atlanta -- the roads are narrow all over the city, but you get used to it. Coming from Midtown to Emory would be easiest done driving, though I do believe MARTA has a bus or two. You can get by without a car in Atlanta, but I would HIGHLY REALLY SUPER DUPER suggest you have a car. MARTA busses are slow and not that reliable, and the train system is very limited. Emory also has shuttles that a lot of students who live near campus (~2-3 miles) rely on. If you're going to Emory, there are a ton of housing options in the Decatur/North Druid Hills area... living in Midtown would be nice for the social scene, but not worth it for the commute. During rush hours it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete what should be a 15 minute drive. Feel free to PM me for any more info
  4. 4 WEEKS!? That seems so soon... I thought there was more time than that. For those of you visiting the department, would you mind posting what you think of it? I'm definitely not going to be able to visit so any info would be helpful
  5. I've also applied to Baylor! The only person who has responded to me is Kathryn Williams (kathryn_williams@baylor.edu ; (254) 710-2571). The best way for me to contact them was to call the department -- once on the phone, everyone was very nice and helpful. I hope we get responses soon! I hold my breath every time I check my email...
  6. Has anyone heard about funding yet? I'm getting nervous... waiting patiently is not a strength of mine.
  7. Got my acceptance too! I started a U of A forum to try to get info. Let me know what you find out!
  8. Hi all! I got my acceptance to U of A last night for the extended program, as an out-of-field applicant. I am so excited! I haven't visited and likely won't be able to... can anyone provide some insights for me? Congrats to all of those accepted!
  9. Accepted to University of Arizona! Couldn't be more excited!

  10. Don't get downtrodden by one rejection! I know it's hard, because it's the first one, but you have 5 more opportunities to shine! It sounds like your application is competitive, but maybe this specific school just didn't think you were a good fit with their program aims/interests/etc. From what several advisors as well as graduate school faculty and deans have told me, grad school is less about qualifications (though of course, that's a huge part), and more about you fitting the program, or ensuring that the program fits you. This just wasn't the right one. Nothing to worry about, and best of luck in this awful waiting process we are all experiencing at the moment.
  11. I keep getting emails from Amazon and every time I see the "A" I think it's Arizona... and then it's not... waiting is killing me!
  12. A quick Google search for "Mandarin SLP" gave me a ton of results, so I would say there is a need and a market for non-Spanish speakers like you. Speech disorders are not unique to English and Spanish With your language skills, you could also easily work abroad. Good luck!
  13. Visiting UT Dallas on Monday... first visit as an accepted (but not committed) applicant. What questions should I ask?

I would ask about the culture of the department in which you'll be working. Do students spend all day/night/crazy hours in the lab? Do students do anything outside of work (or is it a competitive, cut-throat environment)? Does your department/graduate department provide any professional development (seminars, workshops etc)?

And if you get to spend time with current grad students, is there anything they wished they had known before starting at UT Dallas?

Thanks, all! *adds these to my list*

  14. Oh, listen to this. So two of my schools didn't want me to send official transcripts - they just wanted unofficial ones, and said that the official would be needed if I were to be accepted. So I upload the unofficial docs, only to realize AFTER SUBMITTING MY APPLICATION that the docs open as just blank pages. So there I am, frantically emailing copies to any admissions person whose email I can find and calling over and over, only to figure out that the docs had to be opened with the latest version of Adobe Reader (which, let's be honest, who really updates that regularly? Not me!). It all worked out in the end, and everyone got the transcripts they needed, but it was a very tense few days. I only applied to 4 schools, so a problem of that magnitude with 2 of them was a nightmare.
  15. Hello everyone! I am interested in programs with a bilingual English/Spanish focus or opportunities. I am from a city that is predominantly Spanish-speaking and I double majored with Spanish, learning it academically, through study abroad and other travel, and of course by practicing all the time. My other major is Psych/Linguistics, and I've also studied the technical linguistic-y aspects of Spanish, too. Hopefully that turns out to be helpful to me as an out-of-field applicant! I've applied to NMSU ad U of Arizona for bilingual certification programs, and UT Dallas and Baylor for bilingual practicum placement opportunities (even though they don't have a certification process). Does anyone know about the requirements to practice as a bilingual SLP?
  16. If you call admissions, they will give you an email address to which you can send e-transcripts. That's what I did and it eliminates the whole lost-in-the-mail fiasco. Every time I've called, they've been very helpful... hope it all works out!
