Applying to NPSIA - MUNK - Fall 2020
IRbuff replied to Boudibou123's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
On another note, anyone interested in Munk alumni statistics can also go over here: https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/mga/alumni-page/ As I stated earlier, my most prominent gripe was the fact that tuition is too high and I absolutely detest that. All the other contentions I have with the program are not unusual for newly established institutions. Having said that however, I think the quality of the experience (even compared to just its Canadian peers) and its trajectory is on the up. Having seen what the program has achieved in less than 10 years, I can only imagine where it will be in the -
Applying to NPSIA - MUNK - Fall 2020
IRbuff replied to Boudibou123's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
Some background: I came to Canada as an international student and did my undergrad at SFU. Considering Canada’s favorable immigration processes and the fact that I had already stayed here for 4 years, I decided that it would be better to choose a Canadian school of any of my other options. From the options before me, I wanted a program that was both academic and professional in its tint. I wasn’t convinced that I wanted to spend more time in academia, but wanted to keep the option open. While deciding b/w the schools, the only real contenders for me were Munk, LSE, and UOtta -

Congratulations to all the applicants, wherever you may choose to go. I initially joined this forum in 2015 when i was applying to IR programs. Having graduated from Munk in 2017 and working in the industry, I'd be happy to answer any questions and provide advice. Feel free to post on here with any questions or send me a private message as well. (Also i came to Canada as an International Student). I'm honestly here to provide objective information regarding any doubts you may have, based on the options available to you. Profile below for those who are interested: https://www.linkedin.com/i -
Waiting it out: Munk School MGA (Toronto) Fall 2015
IRbuff replied to IRbuff's topic in Waiting it Out
Hi! Well i suppose it is based on the balance of what you have. 3.3 is on the baseline I believe. But, if you can make up for it with some good work experience, concentrated research interests, good personal statement, and good references....then the GPA will not matter all too much. If you have a look around the different forums on the site, you will see that there are students getting into really good schools for IR with baseline GPAs and the reason is because they have taken some time off in order to strengthen their work/practical experience. This doesnt mean you should take a few years to -

I just submitted by grades in January after I got my winter semester grades. I believe that the deadline is Jan 26, so you have enough time to get a transcript from after the winter sem grades are posted. -

Hey!! Awesome, I am looking forward to meeting you! Will be sending in my acceptance the moment I become not so lazy enough to sign the form, scan it, and send it (probably in another 1- 2 days). Hahaha, also, with regards to BSIA: It's not so much the rejection that I am uncomfortable with (I would not have gone even with an acceptance), its more that if people pay for an application to be reviewed, it SHOULD be reviewed regardless of the end result. -

Sorry to hear everyone, I was rejected as well. Hence, I will be going to Munk. I found it weird that "they had already released acceptances prior to processing all other applicants" especially considering that application fee was paid to at least review the application. Is that not a bit suspect? -

I was giving the NPSIA example under a different context although I see your point. I think that claim is subjective. While NPSIA is undoubtedly a good program. For me, as an international student that has not yet attained Canadian permanent residency, I would favor Munk as the better of the 2 because of its focus on public and private. Carleton, one cannot deny, does tend to largely focus itself on the govt and bureaucracy...and I have heard this from multiple NPSIA students as well. The school is excellent if this is what you want, but if you are aiming for the private consultancy sector (an -

Haha, thanks for the advice. I am not sure I agree on all the logic behind the argument but I certainly think that going to Munk is the best decision for me right now. But by all means, keep this discussion going, I think it is very important for other people as well, who are having to make choices between a list of options. Best of luck! I will be chiming in now and then. -

Right, but at the end of the day, I think individuals would also put a great deal more emphasis on the departmenal/subject/faculty based ranking the the university a whole. For example, Carleton is not a very well known university, but when it comes to NPSIA, it is very much sought after. In the professional world, employers would probably put a greater weight on the particular school/dept/faculty itself than the university as a whole. Between Harvard and Georgetown (for MA international affairs), I would certainly pick Georgetown over Harvard despite the fact that Harvard as a university (as -

Alright, while there is a healthy amount of opinions on the subject of dating going around...I might just steer my way back into the whole Munk debate. I got into LSE and Munk. LSE is a one year intensive degree. With a "minimum of 22 hours of class time a week" there is not much time left (at LSE) in terms of getting involved in research (from what I hear it is not that easy for a MA student to just get involved in research with profs), journals, students groups etc. LSE certainly does come with a name and better job prospects (due to its networks), but I also want to make something of m -
