I just looked, $9k-11k+ for one-two bedrooms. The rent budget would depend on funding. Regardless I think even if I received great funding I would be taking out some loans, so I don't really want to push the rent budget, but school housing sounds nice if we could fit in a two bedroom.
  2. Boston College has a joint program in Religious Education between the Ministry and Education departments. I don't believe an education degree is necessary for this program, I would check it out although it may deal with catechism-type education more than pastoral formation. I think it will be difficult to find an education department that wants to read your research about the education of pastors, unless it is a religious school. Teacher's College might be an option, they have had a few Christian people writing on religious topics. Similarly, Claremont Graduate University might be an option, they have a pretty loose interdisciplinary department. Biola University has a phd in Educational Studies which is within their seminary. Of course the obvious answer is if you can't study that in an education department and you are committed to that research, I would look at a theology department and approach it that way. The other option would be to study history of education, perhaps a subject related to "pastoral formation" but save that research till after you get your phd, if that is what you are looking for. I think in general people who explore this issue are not "educators" but "theologians/ministers". Not sure though. Like I said above, I am not sure they will be interested in that type of research. You really have to find someone who is interested in that topic. Yep. Good luck. I don't mean to be a downer. It just takes time to figure out. (I am in a similar situation given my interests)
  3. It depends whether he is looking for a philosophy department that works in philosophical theology or wants a degree in philosophy and theology. At Graduate Theological Union (GTU @ Berkley) you can do a double masters in philosophy and theology. Biola University has a MA in Philosophy and Religion or something like that, which is essentially a philosophy and theology degree (60+units) An article on programs for studying philosophical theology http://forsclavigera.blogspot.com/2010/09/so-you-want-to-go-to-grad-school_07.html
  4. Anyone considered the Institute of Education at UCL? The school is top five is QS (I think) and rated #1 for education.
  5. I suppose it depends on whether you are looking for professional or academic training. I am looking for academic.
  6. Has anyone considered this school an option? It's education department unranked.

Scenario: Teacher's College student, family of six (small children), willing to commute by public transportation, desiring cheap-safe location Suggestions? If this is a pipe-dream let me know. I am assuming it will be too difficult/expensive to study there for my family and I, but I don't know the area at all. Thank you.
  8. It is fair to say this is the general rule. There are about 6 philosophy of ed. programs, and from talking to professors the field is shrinking. In general I am looking for an education department appointment, but hope to be able to hold my weight in applicable areas of philosophy. My main question was whether I should look towards a well-known/"good-fit" POI over department rank. I keep forgetting that I need to take classes and not solely write a thesis/research under my adviser.
  9. To what extent should ranking be considered over fit, or POI quality? I am looking to study the philosophy of education so I am looking for schools with good education departments (where I will get my degree from) and philosophy departments (where I can take classes from). If a well-known POI with cross-appointments (education and philosophy) teaches in an unranked education department, should I consider this as an option? The school is top 30 us news and ranked on pgr.
  10. Tuition or tuition and stipend? I am looking at the Philosophy and Education program, so I am curious. Congrats!
  11. I am thinking I apply for 2017 but I may just decide to do 2016. I won't finish my masters till the end of summer 2016 so it probably would be a bit too much. I have yet to take the GRE and I will also be writing a thesis. Does everyone applying to phd programs have a research topic? Is it as necessary that you have a topic in american phd programs as it is in UK phd programs?
  12. I am looking at the following programs: Philosophy and Education Phd. at Teachers College Theology and Education Phd. at Boston College. Does anyone know of other programs that similarly deal with the foundations of education? I am interested in a program that deals with formal (private) schooling rather than informal religious education. Thank you.
  13. I am looking at the following programs: Philosophy and Education Phd. at Teachers College Theology and Education Phd. at Boston College. Does anyone know of other programs that similarly deal with the foundations of education? I would appreciate recommendations for Phil. of Education Phd. programs also. Thank you.
