uc berkeley vs. UCSD for Ethnic Studies
Randomgal replied to kitzi94's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
If I were you, find the graduate students page and shoot them an email, they might give an insight on the program (e.g. funding, advisor relationships, etc.) -
What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?
Randomgal replied to Authorization's topic in Jobs
1. Professor or Researcher-this is the goal, so we'll see 2. Translator- I know Spanish and French, but Im not fluent 3. Publisher- I think it would be a cool job, and I think the literature universe needs more multicultural representation, or maybe Im just reading the wrong books 4. Television host (a la John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, or John Oliver style)- A girl can dream, right? -
Okay, I just got off the phone with housing. Im in 50/50 position, there are people ahead of me on the list, but it's not entirely impossible to get housing. They also said they call you 30-60 days before your anticipated move-in date if they have a spot for you. Hope this helps!

Prof. Olson was probably my favorite Professor that I had there, she cares a lot about what she does! The Anthro department in general is full of really nice and cool people

Hi there, I went UC Irvine for my undergrad, but I was an Anthropology major there. The Department is Medicine, Science, and Technology focused for the most part, but there are some economic and political anthropology focused faculty. Since you said you're interested in studying environmental health discourse with Michael Montoya, Mei Zhan, Kristin Peterson (I think she's on sabbatical though), and maybe Valerie Olson. I believe from what some grad students told me they get a lot of applications (about 200), for only about 7/8 spots. But, in general, it seems like they're very collaborative and cohesive as a whole. Hope this helps.

I am waiting it out, but if I don't hear anything this month, I think Im going to start searching off-campus.

Hi there, I went to UC Irvine (so I had four years to get familiar with the area). I believe the side of Anaheim that is closer to the hills is regarded as the "hit" side of town, and the side closer to Disneyland is the "miss" part of town. As for surrounding cities, theres Cypress, Westminster, Santa Ana (it's considered rough because it's next to Irvine), Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, La Mirada. All of these communities should be good places to live in, only exception is Santa Ana, it's regarded as rough because it's lower income and it's next to Irvine, which is affluent. In general (this is widely known, I think), Orange County is expensive, especially if you live closer to the coast. I have a cousin who goes to CSUF, and he loves Downtown Fullerton, it's quite nice. My piece of advice is to live somewhere where you have two freeways nearby, just so you have options in case traffic gets really horrible. Hopefully this helps!

Latin American Studies MA- Fall 2015

Interesting, but not surprised UCLA is super selective all around. -

I emailed them a long time ago, and I think the rate ranges 20-60%. Their LAS program is combined with other programs (sort of like UCLA), so their vague answer makes sense. -

Thanks! I already accepted elsewhere though (with a much better funding package) -

It's funny, I just got accepted to one of the schools I applied to today. I guess some places just work in other ways... -
MathCat, your a life saver! My gmail wasn't accepting my password when I first set it up, but it works now, yay!

^^ I set up the acms account thing, but it states that my email is a gmail. I even phoned the tech desk and they said that my gmail account won't be up for a while. UCSD is really weird with their email system.

Just came back from UC San Diego. I got to meet the office manager (Brittany), and she basically went over the logistics of the program and talked a little bit about the funding with me. Also, your first year is coursework only and your second year you are doing your research for your thesis and writing. It's really flexible. I also met a graduate student, with whom I went to a class (undergraduate) that the program director is teaching. I got to meet him. He's nice, I didn't have too many questions for him, so it was a little awkward. Overall, I really liked it and I actually like the campus ( it reminds me of my undergrad school). I think Im going to accept their offer -

Oh, well that's a bummer, but understandable. Sounds like you have a busy trip ahead of you! Are you going to drive or take the train? If you drive, it's about 2 hours (but the 405 and the 5 get lots of traffic), but otherwise not a bad drive. I heard the train route down to San Diego from Union Station is quite nice (you get a nice view of the ocean ). -

I believe it's the same for UC's. Hopefully we hear something soon, and hopefully something about a possible visitation day as well. -

No, he did not call me. I didn't even receive a follow up email. It's Spring Break at the UC's right now, so that might be it. -

I didn't make the 1st round either. It looks like we got an almost identical email. I replied to his email, but I haven't heard back yet. It would be nice to get the fellowship, but we shall see. -
