Hey does anybody here go to Portland state? I am thinking of applying for their masters in social work program and would love to here from somebody in the program!
  2. So I got into Columbia's MSW program last year but deffered my admission for a year due to family problems. Now it looks like my family is moving to Portland so I am looking not going to Columbia and applying to Portland State's MSW program and wondering what my chances are, since I feel they don't accept as many people as Columbia does. Here are my stat's... 3.67 GPA in Elementary Education/TESOL (K-6) graduated in dec 2010. 2 extremely challenging summers working for a outdoor camp for ADD/ADHD/Learning Disabled children from eight to 21 years old. The first summer I was a field counselor and the second I was a course director. Prior military (5 years) as a Flight Engineer on a Combat Air Crew. Vice President of my colleges Florida Reading Association Chapter 1 year volunteer time at a museum I really want to work with Veterans, most likely with at VA clinic or Hospital, so that is something I stress heavily in my Columbia essays, since I have a military background. My only doubt about getting in is that my current job that I am working this fall and spring has nothing to do with social work, its just a job that pays the bills. I will be returning as a course director again through for the summer camp. Any thoughts?
  3. Were did you noticed this? I applied to Columbia and I don't remember having to give that information. And I know when I filled out my FAFSA that it is up to you whether you want to provide your parents financial information, which I opted not to do.
  4. NO WAY man. From what you wrote you'll looking at about 90k in debt! Thats crazy, you want to be a social worker not a doctor. To help put this in perspective, it would take about 17 YEARS at 500 dollars a month just to pay off the principal of the debt at NO interest. Since of course you will have interest on your loans you are looking at 20+ something years of loan payments! Since this is a really rough estimation, it would be probably be much longer than this! You do not want this live like this your whole life, debt sucks, its depressing, and it limits your life choices greatly. You will be much happier with at little debt as possible. Unless you plan on joining the military as a social worker officer (they get paid quite good) I would be looking into trying to get through school with as little debt as possible. In my experience all that matters is that you get the degree, not what school you got it from. If the small niche you are looking to work in is what you really really really want (i assume you must really be interested in it to be considering another 40k in debt for it) I would just try to get that knowledge on my own through other sources, say as a volunteer. People might look down on volunteering since your not getting paid, but I see it as a way to get knowledge and experience at something for free. In the end I think you will be just as successful going a cheaper route and entering the work force sooner, rather than later. This is just my 2 cents through, since I'm sure there are other factors you will have to consider. I hope things work out for you! good luck
  5. I got a summer job working at a summer camp for kids in between my junior and senior year of school, kids had ADD/ADHD and other varying disorders. Had a good time, got some money, learned a bunch about kids/disorders and got a great recommendation for my application out of it. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
  6. yea its def not cheap. I got my award letter a week ago. Got 7000 in grants and about 4400 in work study. Even my GI Bill won't fill in the rest so I'll still be taking some loans out.
  7. my Columbia admission letter is back online for you guys who are waiting for columbia results.
  8. relax dude, you'll know soon, you waited this long whats a few more days? Might even know tomorrow.
  9. you know its funny, I checked yesterday at around 4pm and they had it posted online. When I logged on to the application website at the very bottom of the page it said "admission decision available beginning Feb 24. Your status is available for viewing. Upon clicking the link my acceptance letter popped up. I just logged on now through and its not there anymore, I guess somebody messed and it wasn't supposed to be available for viewing yet? lol
  10. just found out I got admitted to WUSTL through their online website, if you applied there you might want to log on and check it out!
  11. you all need to chill. go with the flow.
  12. you'll get in, msw programs are not medical school is not that hard to get in as long as your show some kind of work/volunteer experience to show you really want to be in the field and your not a academic drop out. Your stats are more that good enough i think. good luck.
  13. applied to Columbia's 2 year program a week ago, we'll see what happens. good luck
  14. Does anybody have any thoughts on good schools for counselor education? I am looking at Harvard GSE and Columbia-TC simply because I "heard" those are the best schools regarding education masters but would like more feedback or thoughts from actual students or grads. Thanks!
