  1. I did the same thing as MonicaSLP! I started the application as a back up school and I received two acceptances (1 from my number one choice) so I did not finish the application. I emailed them numerous times and they took forever to respond and their program does not seem to have  a good rep. I've tried to talk to current grad students and no one has responded yet...

  2. I'm in the same boat as you! I was offered an assistantahip and that really helps my decision out a lot! I love SLU because it is a great institution, the faculty is diverse, they focus on cultural issues, externship for a whole semester, the faculty seems to care about the students' well-being, it's a fun city, the school's motto is serving and helping others, and I also talked to a current graduate student and she had nothing but great things to say about the program!

  3. Hi all! I am so happy I found this forum! I was recently accepted to SLU for graduate school and I am looking for places to live near campus since my program starts June 1st! Does anyone who is familiar with the area have any suggestions on housing? Any advice is greatly appreciated  :)

  4. To Arcanelady27..I've always wanted to not disclose my race on applications just to see if there is a difference on how they treat or admit POC. What you just relayed to us is scary but it is very common and I cannot think of any explanation as to why that occurred! Every year the field of SLP changes and the application process varies from each cycle but that does seem odd. It is sad to say but some schools do not over look race, gender, or ethnicities. One of my professors who teaches my counseling for SLP class at my university literally said this out loud one day in class.."one year I had a few middle eastern women in my class and I felt uncomfortable when the came into class with their bodies and heads covered up, it just made me feel unsafe.." she always went on to say that "African-Americans tend to not look people in the eyes when communicating due to slavery.." Those words came from a SLP who teaches future SLPs on code of ethics....

  5. Has anyone who has gotten the open house invitation been denied?

I haven't been declined yet...but I did receive the email about open house today stating that its filling up fast  and its a great place to meet potential roomies and future classmates...so I am a tad bit confused.

  6.  Wow. That's crazy. Did she tell you what groups of people were represented in their grad program?

Also did she tell you anything about the actual program because I'm interested in knowing what it's like over there.

It was mostly caucasian women she didn't have anything bad to say but she said she was ready to leave the area. She said the DC area is a lot of fun...obviously the cost of living is expensive (but thats a given). She mentioned how the commoradity in the cohort was not as close as it could have been but that can change depending on the people you come in with. There are opportunities for students to do research! I'll look at my notes from ASHA when I get home and share more info with you!

  7. As an African American, I haven't experienced any discrimination as far as I'm concerned. At the undergrad level, my program is extremely diverse and our faculty is pretty diverse as well. Even the grad students are pretty proportionate in numbers. But my program may be the exception.

Just from my acceptances and interviews, I think that I've been given a fair chance and if it had to do with my race, I would not have even had interviews for the programs that are predominately white (which would probably be all except Howard).

But with that being said, in some cases, in may not even be what you know but who you know and I had a pretty good internship in NYC that may have opened doors for me because my GRE scores aren't competitive.

As for HBCUs not admitting POC that often, I find that hard to believe because I keep hearing that we are getting in. And even looking at Facebook pages and such, programs such as Howard's does have mostly POC in them. I mean, it's just a competitive field I guess and they can't admit EVERY POC.

I actually met with Howard at the ASHA convention this past November and one of the POC grad students admitted that POC are under-represented especially in HBCUs and she felt that if she didn't attend Howard for undergrad and make the connections with the faculty she doesn't think she would have been accepted just from her stats. It was interesting talking to her one on one because she was a POC.

  8. Thanks ChristinaG for sharing! I also have a question about financial aid. Someone posted earlier about financial aid and listed questions she received in the mail. I haven't received anything yet and was admitted last week. I don't want to miss the March 15th deadline of getting those questions in. What should i do? Thanks so much!

Maybe you should call and ask? I received the same questions in the mail as well so I would call and follow up!

  9. Who is "them?"

There is the SLP department located in Dallas at the Callier Center. Do NOT send transcripts to them.

There is also the UTD main office in Richardson. You send transcripts there.

This is the most plausible reason as to why your documents appear to be Schrodinger's transcripts - Callier may have them but Richardson may not.

If you haven't already, I would fedex the transcripts to Richardson asap.

I called the graduate department at UT-Dallas and I spoked to someone who verified that they had my transcripts and she explained to me that "final transcripts" are for after I complete undergrad...

I just checked my receipt for my transcript order and I sent them to the right place so I am still confused...

    Thanks for replying!

  10. I experience the same exact thing! People assume or judge you because of the way that you speak it blows my mind. We can't just be educated...have you seen this performance?!

Also has this happened to you...people in our program think they we as minorities have a better chance of getting into grad school just because we are people of color...I was shocked when I first heard that from a few of my classmates...

If anything we have to be 10x better just so we can be recognized or even mentioned in the same category

  11. chandru1- Oh trust me I have! Everything is there except my official final college transcript due May 1, 2015 which I'm assuming they only want when you accept their admission invitation. I submitted mine near the deadline in February. Just saw that my application fee didn't go through until February 16 (one day late) so that makes me nervous.

I am going through the same dilemma! I keep getting emails saying that my final transcripts have not been received but when I called and explained this to them they said they received my official transcripts and gave me a date and everything...I just received an email this morning saying that they are still missing my final transcripts...so confused and I sent my official transcripts in January, I guess I'm going to have to call them again later today

  12. There might be....I guess there is no way to know it is sad though...
I was talking to a few people of color at the ASHA convention in November and they had some really nice explanations as to why we are the minority and why we always be in this field...

Sidenote: I applied to one school in New York (Teacher's College) mainly because they said they promote diversity in their program and look at the holistic person and not just stats
