  3. If you aren't in any debt and can fund yourself without loans, I'd say go for it If you are in debt I'd say don't do it

  6. I disagree, UC Irvine's LPS is quickly climbing the ranks and will inevitable supplant Pitt. I say down the line, UCI will look better on a CV than Pitt.
  7. the guy ^above^ me will get full funding into the top program of his choice

  8. UC Irvine has a Top 10 machine learning program.
  9. Does anyone have any success stories of getting into grad school through a "back door". I mean, not through the traditional means in some way? Let me tell you my situation: So I have a 2.8 GPA and a BS in computer science from a top 50 university that is also a public state university. This summer I'm doing research work for a professor who gave me three A's/ A+'s. She is paying me money at part time hours. The graduate students in this professor's research group hint to me that if she signs the proper paperwork, anything can happen. Is it too much to assume that I can get back into this school for my PhD with this professor as my advisor??
  10. ^the guy directly above me will get a last minute acceptance with full funding

  11. I still think dinosaurs are the most important area of study bump
  12. 2.4 GPA UG, 2.2 major Stellar GREs, double 360's 2 Good letters of rec from previous employers, 1 good one from my favorite TA I've got balls of steel.
  13. I want to be a post doc for about ten years of my life, moving from state to state every two years because postdoc positions are not permanent. Eventually I will stop trying to get a TT position at a top university and start teaching at my local community college where all my "loser" friends from high school attended. Those "loser" friends have already made more money than I ever will in my life. Oh wait maybe I'm being too realistic. I WANNA BE A PROFESSOR AT STANFORD!!
  14. No offense to your teachers but I'd rather kill myself than teach high school. But really, what else can I do with a CS PhD from a school ranked 50-100?
  15. Wait you must have made a mistake, you flipped those around" Most Useful: Anything involving dinosaurs Least Useful: History . . . I can understand why the field would be interesting, but it lacks any apparent relevance to modern life. There I fixed it for you.
  16. If you think it is competitive to get into a PhD program how hard do you think it is to get a TT job? If you want a TT job at a respectable university: Value rank If you are OK teaching at a community college: Whatever you want
  17. oh well in that case I am convinced that both of you go to rinky dink community colleges and you weren't really properly educated. GL
  18. One of the PRIMARY REASONS why one would take a subject GRE test is to show that their unknown regional college had a sufficiently traditional curriculum to allow you to get into the 90th percentile on the test!! Take the math subject test! Study for it and get into the 90th percentile! This will MAKE UP FOR your college's unknown reputation!! ..to an extent. But it will help if you are confident you can score in the 90th percentile! If you DO get into the 90th percentile, then apply for higher ranked programs as the above posters said. But without the subject GRE "prestigious" schools will be all like "well his school is not prestigious like ours so maybe he didn't really learn anything and those A's he got in upper div math mean nothing!" But with the 90th percentile on GRE subject they must say "well even though we aren't sure what the cirriculum is like at regional college X, he WAS able to beat 90 percent of the people who took this test -- the vast majority of whom came from well-known colleges! I am now more willing to accept his 4.0 upper div math GPA as a piece of evidence that he will be a good researcher in our department" TAKE THE TEST!!!!!!
  19. have a good time teaching philosophy at community college, buddy. edit: oops, this is @the last poster of page 3
  20. My GPA is 3.1 Should I bother with outside fellowships? Do they care about anything else besides GPA? BTW I am quite a good writer (especially compared to other students in my field) Major: Computer Science
