  1. No. Not necessary. It depends on things in your application and also the professor who found your application interesting. e.g. I had two interviews (not top 20 places). Both of them were about asking me to join the university and the lab. Basically telling me that I was admitted.
  2. I meant that if I wanted to get summer internships in tech companies (since they pay a lot), would it hurt if i live in blacksburg? Anyways I am getting 1850$ per month. Do you think I could afford a single room and live comfortably in that money? Would I need a car or is public transport good enough?
  3. I am more interested in OS/Systems field. Do internships placements etc. depend on the location?
  4. Let him know what times you are free so that he can choose from them. Also there is nothing you can do to prepare for a grad school interview (other than practice answering common questions in english if you are an international student.)
  5. I am sure the POI will appreciate your honesty. And since your field is not large maybe it will help him to target someone who is actually interested. I once rejected an interview because I had better offers and was no more interested in that school. I told professor the truth, maybe it saved him some time and resources.
  6. I got into virginia tech and Utah(salt lake).PhD funded. I am leaning towards VT. Can someone tell me about pros and cons?
  7. Hi Can someone tell me how the city is for a Muslim student? My most important concern is the availability of Halal food. Also as I will be a graduate student in the CS dept what will be some good nearby places to live in and approx rent? Does VT have hostels? Can someone tell details about it?
  8. I have heard about the stipend being around 1500-2500 or even more. It depends on the location e.g. expensive city vs suburban university town. Avearages are probably around 1900-2100$ per month for 9 months. I think summer pays more. Not sure though.
  9. Regret never does any good. Just be happy that you got into great places as it is.
  10. @gughok Just email the graduate admissions office or whatever the relevant department is with the details and tell me that due to mismatch in the name you are sending the email. I have had instances where I got email replies that my scores have been received but no update on online portal still. - Your application number - The name on your GRE - Your GRE applicant number - GRE test date
  11. I think you are right, but I also think that it is necessary to gauge the spoken skills of international students especially if their TOEFL score is on the borderline. They probably wont be successful in the program in they cant speak english effectively and discuss their research idea etc. It might actually play to their advantage because they might be rejected otherwise (no funding = rejection). Still I agree that it is not okay to interview international students for this purpose, and if they do it should not have any effect on the admission decision (so that they do not any disadvantage compared to native speakers).
  12. Can you tell me about the details of interview with UCI? And also tell who took your interview and if you mentioned him in your SOP? What area are you interested in and what is your GPA/research experience?
  13. @LWT From my own experience, what I learned from my seniors' experience and read online here are some of the reasons for the interview. If you are an international student then the interview might serve the additional purpose of gauging your spoken english skills. If you are a really good candidate then the interview might be the professor convincing you to join the university and his lab. Other than that professors usually do interviews for a these reasons: First is to act as tiebreaker, in case your application is a close competitor. Second is that they want to get a feel of you as a real person. They might do it so that they can know how well you know your stuff and if you have really done what you said in your personal statement, they might ask questions about project details or "what-if" questions or questions like "why did you do this and why not this..." to understand how you think as a researcher. Or there might be some things in your SOP that need explanation. Another reason is that you have you have a certain type of experience e.g. operating some specific type of machinery or software or knowledge of some subfield that they are doing research in, or something else that makes them think that you might be helpful in their research and by doing the interview they are trying to figure out if you are indeed suitable, so that they can offer you an RA. I had an interview where the professor told me that he choose me because I had some experience in using an xyz tool(used in a subfield of Computer Science), and had taken xyz subjects which makes me suitable for an upcoming project that he wants me to work on(if offered admission). I should tell you that I had only novice level experience in the field and he did not actually test my knowledge about that specific field, but wanted to know if my foundation was good. (He asked me question about basic computer architecture and stuff like what was the most complex code I had written. Because his research area required good architecture knowledge and good programming skills.) He will probably need to train me first, before I can undertake any real work in his lab.
  14. In addition you could ask about current students, internship opportunities, placements of graduates, when will you have to choose an advisor, i.e. from the start or maybe later in your degree and about how funding relates to advisor, e.g. if you get an RA with one professor but you want your thesis advised by someone else.
  15. I got an email on Wednesday about a Skype interview. Possible days Friday and the coming Monday. (only 2 day notice)
  16. What are some colleges that provide funding to MS students? I know that many have TAships etc reserved for PhDs but some dont. Can some tell me which of them offer funding?
  17. I know a few people (my seniors) who got into top programs like UIUC, UT Austin, MIT in PhD but they did not have any publications at all. But they did have research experience and were doing research project with faculty members.
  18. My GPA is 3.3 with major GPA 3.6+ I have good recommendations but no publications, yet. I am an international student. I cannot afford masters program but I am willing to go for a funded MS program before my PhD. I am interested in the areas of operating systems, program analysis(have no experience in this field) and networks. Please suggest some institutions that fall in my range for PhD. Thanks
  19. My adviser says that he can get me a guaranteed admission into a top university (top 5 in my field) fully funded, if I make significant progress in a project I am working with him with on, with collaboration with a research group from that university. Can he possibly do that? He also says that even my GPA, personal statement and publications (or lack of) wont matter, because he knows people in that research group. Is it possible for him to do that or is it just a tactic to make me work hard?
  20. What are the requirements for getting admission in a top CS Masters program in Germany? How much GPA in undergrad is a good GPA?
  21. How do the admission requirements and difficulty vary for the combined MS/PhD for Computer Science, when compared to separate MS or PhD? Are the combined programs also fully funded like PhD?
  22. I think we should wait a few day. When I applied last year I got the email on 3rd march.
