  1. From my experience, they generally admit 4-5 people to the program depending on the year. I don't know whether they interviewed everyone they admitted, or really any other details about the admitted students. As for who I plan to work with, I have a good relationship with a number of the faculty, and given my - lets say - idiosyncratic interests, I hope to have the chance to work with many of them (and possibly some people outside the dept as well). Anyone can PM me if you'd like to know more about my work etc
  2. Just an update. I've decided to attend since I received my funding package information. Anyone else hear anything?
  3. I got into MAPSS (Deferred from the Committee on Social Thought) and was very seriously considering (1/3 tuition) it but I just was accepted to my UGrad institution PhD program with full funding and a stipend (and its a pretty renowned dept, certainly in my focus) so I'm going to be accepting that. I talked about MAPSS's reputation with some people here and they said, at least in anthro, the students do pretty well for themselves afterwards, but I'm going to go straight for the doctorate.
  4. i heard through the grapevine Columbia is having a rough year and are taking very few students relative to the large number of faculty. At a school that is already dealing with some political camps issues, sounds like there's probably some fighting over whose favorites are getting in
  5. Never heard of it, but Hopkins has been rolling out all these funky business/engineering MS programs lately - i have a bunch of friends who are in them (went straight out of UGrad from Hop to MS at Hop in most cases). Most say they like it and they have some really innovating pedagogical methods, we're just not really known for our business stuff. Nonetheless, they certainly seem interesting and most of my friends are quite happy (especially given the state of the economy)
  6. I was interviewed (I live near the University) but I don't know how many people were. Not sure whether I found out somewhat earlier because I know the profs, but hopefully I can get you all some more information by tomorrow. Best of luck!
  7. Hopkins is my UGrad institution and I just found out I've been admitted to the PhD program here! Anyone else planning on coming to Johnny Hop?
  8. just got an email from a prof (I'm internal) that I've been accepted!!! Anyone else hear yet/planning to attend?
  9. Fuzzy - Thanks for the advice and comforting words. My discipline is anthropology, for the record, and the peculiar thing about this case, is that I have a long relationship with almost the entire department and still currently work for a professor there. I was very active in the dept. as an undergrad, and have many friends among the faculty and current graduate students. I'm trying to figure out what information they might be looking for, especially since its someone with whom I don't have a pre-existing relationship. Also, its a relatively small department from which all my recommendations come, and my project pitch from my SoP is very much the product of an ongoing engagement with multiple people from the dept. Thanks again for the help!
  10. So I've never posted a question but I just got called this morning for an interview to my alma mater about my PhD application. I know nothing about how the interview factors into the decision, what they are used for (if anything), how positive (or negative) a sign it is, etc. I'm hoping its to get information about why I want to stay and whether I would attend if admitted, but who knows. Its the one professor I don't really know in the dept. Any information would be greatly helpful, thanks
  11. Hey - I'd love to be able to blog as well, both as catharsis and to share my experiences/exchange ideas and thoughts with people.
