  1. Moved from "The Bank:" So, I've been blessed with a wonderful dilemma: one of the 4 schools (we'll call it School A) that I applied to offered me a tuition waver + stipend (I'm unsure of how much the stipend actually is, though) which is unheard of for a masters degree in my field, but the deadline for accepting it is in 12 days. The real pickle is that I haven't yet heard anything from two of my other schools and have an interview with the third in a week. These other 3 schools might actually be better fits for me, but I'm not entirely sure because I haven't really had a chance to visit School A-- I was really hoping to get to School A's admitted students' open-house in three weeks before making a decision, and don't really have a chance to visit School A before the deadline because of work and my interview. Incidentally, I think Interview School (UW) will give me a very good financial package-- perhaps even full tuition plus stipend if they accept me with the stipulation that I RA/TA etc. I'm going to speak with somebody on Monday about trying to get an extension, but it's not looking good. Any suggestions on how I should approach this? Any other general thoughts on what I should do/ advice from folks who have been in this position before? I guess I can't really go wrong with School A-- I only applied to schools that I was sure I would like to attend, and I do like how the program looks on paper. The school location is really my biggest concern. Cheers!
  2. Duct tape (duh, haha)
  3. MS programs in public health are not as competitive as one may think-- fit seems to matter more. A dentist with a 1000 GRE, in my opinion, stands a decent shot of at least one acceptance. Good luck!

  7. huh, that's interesting. Thanks for the info!
  8. Hey LittlePig, Yep, I'm starting to wish I had applied to schools with better funding options -- "top" or not. Oh well. Tis what it is. And I really, really like all of the programs I applied to, so can't go wrong. Good luck!
  9. No worries, Kohaku. I'd guess that they are probably busy with admissions crunch-time. It took me 8 days to get in touch with an admin at a school I've already been accepted to (no response via e-mail or phone call). Chin up!
  10. Any of you guys/gals applying to Environmental Health programs? If so, which, what, where? I'm applying to (in no particular order): Yale MPH (EHS) Berkeley MS (EHS) Hahvahd SM 80-credit (EER) University of Washington MS (EHS) Cheers, and bet of luck to you all!
  11. To JerryLandis, thanks for the reply. The more I hear about the AW section, the more I wish I had studied for it. I guess I figured that writing was the section I'd fair the best in without preparation... nope. haha. I may retake it if I think I can get above 5. From what you say (which reiterates a good bit of advice from previous replies as well as some of the other threads I've recently read through), the book-advice is super-helpufl, and different from what I expected. I'll be doing some more research into that as soon as I can get to a library (I may or may not have gotten rid of my Kaplan book in post-test celebration, haha). Some of these fellowships are full-rides, or pretty big chunks of change, and it may be worth it seeing as they have April review dates. On a different note, what a rough time with the standardized state stuff-- blah. Glad it worked out for you though. Thanks again!
  12. I'm certainly not looking for a pick-me-up-- I'll call my mother in New York if I need that. I'm looking for honest opinions from those who may have a better understanding of the matter than I, stated without biting sarcasm ("why are you asking anyways?" "fine" "your choice," not to mention your second post seemed to spitefully and caustically contradict your first). But if that is your honest opinion/educated advice, than I truly appreciate it. Thank you.
  13. Liszt, thank you for the reply. Seadub, thanks for your honest opinion.
  14. Thanks for the reply. Two reasons for posting: 1) Because I'm concerned with my standing with scholarships (as per the explanation in my original post), which will not be announced for at least another month. 2) Yup, I have indeed been admitted to a school. But, it's the least selective of the four that I applied to, and when I visited, I really hit it off with the adcom members of my department. Because I meshed with the adcoms, I feel that my AW score, which I know is at least on the cusp of unacceptable, could have been overlooked because of the long, convincing chat I had with them. This will not be the case at the other three schools to which I applied.
  15. To prevent your profile from appearing on search engines, like Google, is pretty simple. Just head to Account> Privacy Settings> Search, then uncheck "Public search results." Best of luck!
  16. haha, touche! Thanks for the advice, and congrats on your acceptances! Here's hoping you get that fellowship
  17. Howdy, I took the GRE back in October and was pumped with my scores (710V, 760M). That is, until I got my AW section back (4.0 AW). I don't get it-- I've always thought of myself as an above-average writer; but it's good to be humbled, I suppose... maybe I used words that were too large/awkward (sesquimillenium anyone?). Just how important is the AW section (both for admissions and scholarships) for those of us applying to Master of Science programs? Will grades (A- to A+ in college English classes) or the quality of my personal statement offset this at all? Is it worth retaking the GRE for scholarship reasons? Thank you in advance for your help! werd
