Michigan State University Class of 2017 :)
nicoleac replied to SkylerN's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Beaumont apartments are supposed to be really nice, I don't actually know anyone who lives there though! I have had 1 friend who lived in Homestead, and I think she liked it well enough? I don't remember her saying anything super negative, anyway. Homestead has a pretty good location. I think the apts themselves are pretty average from what I remember. And my cousin is moving this summer to Woodbrook! I can ask her what she thinks of it. I don't know anything about 2900 place, and I don't know anything about Timberlake...I've actually never heard of that one lol. Sorry I don't have SUPER detailed descriptions of apartments--EL is where my parents live, so I never lived in any of the apartments there, so all my information is about places people I know live/lived no first hand experience. I hope it's still helpful! -
Congratulations!!!!! I know, the cost is why I'm probably declining. A partial scholarship of a tuition that high is still probably not enough, no matter how great the school is.

Congrats on UW-Madison!! I feel like now that I have been accepted to schools I would be happy attending...now I care much less about getting accepted to the rest of the schools I applied to, but I want a decision just for the peace of mind! It's nice to cross another one off the list instead of playing the waiting game
-
Thank you so much GOOD LUCK! I imagine you will get yours really soon!!!
-
I just got my decision email. I am accepted! They said I am being considered for a merit-based scholarship, but will not let me know until April 13th. If I don't get the scholarship, I will be declining! If any of you are waitlisted, I hope this helps.

I have heard from other people who haven't received an email either. It is strange, but I think everything should be okay! I called the school back in January and confirmed they had all my application materials, and they said as long as CSDCAS was mailed to them, they have it.

Thank you! I got a weird email this morning...I never got the email about March 18th, like it seems other people did. However, this morning I got an email saying, "Your application decision will be delivered today, March 18th." Lol what? What was the point of that? Thanks for the warning...the subject line of the email got my hopes up!

funding / aid / scholarships question

But by far the most important thing was filling out your FAFSA! So you are doing good as far as funding goes! I hope I was a little helpful! -
funding / aid / scholarships question
nicoleac replied to jlgpoint169's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Don't apologize for having questions!! As a US native, I STILL find funding baffling. It's a horrible, confusing process, I don't quite understand all the details myself, and it oftentimes depends on the school to which you are applying. To be offered tuition grants and loans, all you needed to have done was fill out the FAFSA and send it (on the FAFSA website) to each school that you are applying to. The schools themselves will then send you notices saying exactly how much you get, at some later time, and there is nothing else you have to do. When people are talking about funding on this website and worrying about it, they're generally discussing any extra money the school will give you that does not come from the government. For most schools, you don't have to do anything extra to get this, either. Usually on the application to the school it will have a box marked "I would like to receive assistantships/funding/scholarships" or something like this. If you check the box you are automatically considered for extra scholarships. These are things that might include a TA position, which is a work position teaching undergraduate students or grading their papers or something. Also you may get an out-of-state tuition waver if you aren't a resident in the state in which you are going to school. Or it may just be a merit scholarship because you had a particularly good application. Sometimes, RA positions, which is work doing research for a professor, are included in this automatic category, and other times you have to email professors and ask them individually if you can work for them as an RA. This depends on the school. Usually there are also additional scholarships, like the NYC Teach one you mentioned, that you have to apply for separately. There should be a listing of such scholarships on the school's website, and links to applications for each one. These are usually very competitive. I have found it the most helpful to call the school and ask for specific information on their funding process--it is a pain in the ass, especially if you applied to many schools, but speaking to the school directly will give you the most accurate information. Unfortunately I don't really know anything about loan forgiveness! I know it is possible, but I think it depends on the employer? I am not sure, sorry! -
Fall 2015 UT Dallas Applicants?
nicoleac replied to onedayslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi Sarah, the emails you are getting are just automated messages sent by the system. This happens because all acceptances are conditional due to the fact that you are not going to be accepted if you don't receive a bachelor's degree first. Just ignore the emails--there's not a real person sending them, just a computer. -

I'd be happy to! East Lansing has a bit of a parking problem--most of the apartments within walking distance are pretty unsuitable for anyone who's not an undergrad looking to party all the time, like College Towne apts. However, if you live off campus, it's impossible to find parking. Most people take the CATA bus. Two apartments I'd recommend that have CATA stops right next to them are Chandlers Crossing and Castle Pointe. Those apartments are reasonably nice, reasonably close, and reasonably inexpensive. I have had many MSU friends live at both complexes. Chandlers Crossing is more of a "community" type of apartment complex, with community activities and a bunch of amenities. Castle Pointe is a bit more secluded. Also, many students live in actual houses on campus instead of apartments. This could be a good choice if you all group together and live together! That way you get parking, walking distance, and spacious living quarters all in one package. Also, I must warn you, MSU's campus is HUGE. Like, it takes forever to walk from one side of campus to the other. It's surrounded by fields and has an agricultural history, so even though it is walkable and you don't need to bus anywhere to get to a certain campus location, it could take you upwards of an hour depending on how fast you are and where you're trying to go. East Lansing itself is pretty small, but it's surrounded by many other cities to create one mega-city, called the Greater Lansing area. You could find housing in these surrounding cities as well, such as Haslett, Okemos, Lansing, Dewitt, the list goes on...each subsection of Greater Lansing has its own quirks and stuff to do, I'd be happy to share specifics of you guys are interested Just let me know if there's anything else you want to know! -

I didn't apply to MSU because I am an out-of-field applicant, but I am from East Lansing and they have a reputation in MI for having a great SLP program! I can't share helpful details, because I didn't bother to look up program particulars since I was ineligible to apply, but just so you out-of-state applicants know, their program is highly respected--congrats to all of you on getting accepted!!! -
Those are all great questions!! I am glad you mentioned the research recommendation...I must have somehow missed that on their website I have also done research (too much...ugh) and feel the same way as you. I really do not want to complete a thesis. That is, unless they offer research assistantships, in which case I guess I'll bite the bullet and do it if necessary. I'm wondering, if a thesis is strongly recommended but not required, what are the penalties for not doing one? I mean, we're already accepted into grad school, so what else would we want a thesis for unless we were considering pursuing a PhD? It's not like finding a job as an SLP is incredibly difficult, so I don't think it would make a significant difference on a resume for clinical work. Hi Saila, do you know what the track record for the program is? I know that it's dependable on the year but where can we find info about past years?

You're welcome!! Good luck wherever you accept

# of applicants vs. # of slots calculation question
nicoleac replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
No problem I based stats off of offers, and also average GPA/GRE etc. Thinking positive is best! It's better to not worry about it (even though that's impossible...) and just wait for results to come out. Good luck!!! -
I am from Michigan--this is just my personal opinion...DON'T go to EMU! If you got accepted anywhere else, for the love of god, don't go there. I go to the University of Michigan, which is only 10 min away from Ypsilanti. Some EMU programs are great. Their SLP program is terrible. Everyone I know who goes there has had nothing good to say...they're unorganized, don't respond to emails, and do not offer good practicum/classroom experiences whatsoever. Professors are uninterested and the whole program is in disarray. One of the interns at the clinic I volunteer at goes to EMU, and she said they're being investigated by ASHA because their program is a joke. I know this sounds like a very strong opinion, and you don't have to trust me if it's your dream school! But I want to warn you that all I've heard were negative things. It looks like you got into several other schools (congrats ) I'd recommend them over EMU!

# of applicants vs. # of slots calculation question
nicoleac replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
It depends on how you want to think about it...I would use number of admission offers--target class size is smaller than admissions offered, because people turn down admission, and admission offers include those accepted off the waitlist as well, I believe. -
How are you deciding which program to go to?
nicoleac replied to moosemoose's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I hate to say it but my decision so far is being based on funding. One school offered me an in-state tuition waver, and the other (my top choice) won't give out funding info for another week or so. When it comes down to it, though, I can't justify paying double the amount for similar educations. I've also been stalking these forums to try and find information about both schools. I found a current student from UT Dallas who has been messaging me all there is to know, which has been an invaluable source of information! If it's possible, I would recommend trying to get into contact with current grad students--they've been in our shoes before and generally have sympathy to answer all questions lol. No matter what...we got into grad school! So no matter where we choose, it's a win-win situation. Side question...The two schools I'm deciding between are UT Dallas and University of Arizona. Does anyone know anything about these programs in particular or know someone who's a student there now? -
Hi guys I'm new to this forum but I've been stalking it since September! I also just got admitted to UA, and it's my number one choice--however, I can't attend if I don't get funding...has anyone called the office to ask when we will receive funding notifications, and what kind of funding is generally available? I'm also an out-of-field applicant, and I'm not sure if that is taken into consideration when awarding assistantships, seeing as I've only taken one prereq. Also, has anyone talked to a current UA student to get their perspective on the program? Having a contact like that would be an invaluable source of information! I am also trying to go visit April 3rd! I don't know if it will be an option, but please do let us know what you think
