Also claiming a Davis admit! Nice confidence booster after a few rejections. Big congrats to everybody who has received good news so far. Another thing - the congeniality and camaraderie displayed by the people in this thread makes me feel optimistic about our field. Here's to hoping that we all become friendly acquaintances, collaborators, and even coauthors in the future.

I strongly second that. This forum is one of the few places left on the internet which did not become nasty over time. I hope grad school have at least an ounce of the helpfulness displayed here by total strangers.

I claim one of the UNC acceptance (IR). I will offer up more later but for what it's worth, this is my second cycle. Two years ago I was pretty devastated watching the rejections roll in. There is no clear path but I will share that in my last rejection previously I was offered a two-year MA program. I didn't think much of it and then it followed up with full-funding. I spent that last year and half improving my quantitative background, gaining research and TA experience and developing relations with faculty members. Two years is a long time before giving up another five to six years of your life. I hope no one needs to make that decision but I can say it is a viable means to an end if this is truly what you want.

Congratulations! And I second your point. Last cycle I tried without success, but I worked to improve my profile this year and it worked really well.

Your would be advisor(s')'s track record of placing students is just about the only thing that matters if you want to be in the academy.

I may not pursue an academic career, although it is my standard course of action. I want to keep as many options open as possible right now.

     4) I have 2 cats that won't be moving with me to either place, so I'll miss them dearly, so an extra semester with them sounds great (it sounds dumb, I know).

It doesn't sound dumb at all. I also have a cat and she is going to the US with me.

I am in a similar situation: I am enrolled in three classes as a special student (enrolled only in the courses, not as grad student) beginning next month. I will attend them, but in my case I won't have to move. If I had to, I probably would not go on with these classes and would enjoy my last months of freedom in my country (which I suspect is the same of yours, as per the details you gave).

  5. You should reply, so they can know you received their offer. Say you are happy, excited, etc., that you are going to review their offer with great care and compare to others you received.

They do this every cycle. For us it is a first time experience (I tried last cycle, but didn't get admissions, so didn't need to answer anybody), and that's why it is so difficult. They will understand you want to review your offers, because they would do the same in our place (and they DID when it was their time).

So, I suspect my lower verbal score is just killing my applications. Any school or professor I talked stated that lower verbal scores are not that much of a problem for international students. My V score is 157, Q 165, AW 5, and the mentioned people I talked to stated that it would be enough in terms of GRE requirements. However, looking at the admissions page, I only see very high verbal scores. So, I can't stop thinking four rejections so far are related to my lower verbal score, even if I was ensured that it wouldn't cause so. All other materials that I've submitted have been reviewed twice by 3 professors at NYU, so I just feel like I should have had something. Now, I am quite pessimistic for the future.

    Edit: My subfield is comparative

Impossible to know for sure. I definitely would not dismiss any file solely due to GRE verbal score, unless they were really really poor (yours is not). But I am not a member of adcoms.

FWIW, there's always a level of randomness to the process. Maybe you're going to get only good news from now on. No need to get desperate now!

Got an email from UCSD telling me to check my application status on their website, but it still indicates Under Review as my status. I'm confused. Maybe I should email them?

Check the "messaging" button at the right end of the table. Mine still says "Under review", but when I go to the Messages section there is one message from them informing my rejection.

If the rest of my programs release decisions on approximately the same date as last cycle, then it's really next week that I have to worry about... Not sure if that makes me more or less anxious. That being said, my worst case scenario outcome has changed from "wait another year and spend a lot more money on applications" to "attend a good program in a beautiful city with great weather," so I think I've officially lost my complaining privileges this cycle.

    Ditto.

My anxiety shifted from "OMG what if I have to try again next cycle" to "I need all responses NOW so I can choose and definitely know where I'm going".

You see, anxiety is always a constant.

  9. Ceteris paribus, I'd go with program ranking. A program's position in a program ranking is probably a function of several factors, including its prestige among peers. People from the outside might look at Cornell more favorably than Indiana despite their programs' rankings, but scholars familiar with the field in general will recognize Cornell has a considerably weaker program, and probably place the appropriate weight to this fact when evaluating someone.

Austin is also quite well-known in Latin American politics! Congrats! :)

To cite someone, you should just write @ + name (together).

Of course. Years of Twitter and you thought I would learn something. Thank you.

And thanks about Austin. They still did not send more details about their offer, and of course I want to know what will come out of all other programs I applied; but if somebody from the future said to me at the beginning of the cycle I would get accepted by UT-Austin, I would be enormously satisfied right then.
