  1. it all counts. One of my current classmates just graduated from undergrad. We're all at different levels of experience. It depends on if you feel you're ready for grad school and you have something to offer them. I personally did most of my professional work as an assistant director and had a lot of semi and community experience. I got in.
  2. I'm a Canadian citizen who will be attending Columbia's school of arts in September. I'm excited about starting classes but all this fundraising is freaking me out. I've started the loan appliation process and I'm willing to swallow the $44k in tuition plus school fees and living expenses but I'm hunting for scholarship/grant opportunities. I received a small 10k a year fellowship from the school which is helpful but a drop in the bucket when i'm looking at the whole picture. Anyway I've come across a lot of amazing scholarship opportunities until I read the dreaded lines...for US citizens or permenant residents only....Game over! Any suggestions for a Canadian in the US who wants free money for school???
  3. I'm from Montreal and did my undergrad at McGill....forget UWO....no one outside Canada knows it and it's in a tiny city. McGill has a Better international reputation than UofT even though UofT is actually a better school but first impressions go a long way. They're almost at par but I would go where the funding is. Montreal is also MUCH cheaper than Toronto. I mean uncomparably, so. Plus Toronto is very corporate, you need a car to get anywhere while Montreal has a lot more culture and you can walk anywhere you need to around campus and the surrounding downtown area. Choose McGill....I wish the program I got accepted into offered me some funding! You're lucky. Jump at it!
  4. So the acceptance has come and the joy has been overshadowed with the dreaded "no funding" information. I am a Canadian Citizen and will be doing an MFA in theatre in New York this fall. I have been scouring the internet for scholarship information but have found very little. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated!
  5. I really don't think there's anything wrong with checking in to inquire. As long as you're not calling daily, a friendly call or email saying checking in or touching base can illicit a response sooner than you think. It worked for me. If they like your work, and are considering you...they're not going to change their minds because you're excited and anxious!
  6. the possibility of a second acceptance is becoming an almost reality and now I'm petrified that I have huge decisions to make. Why am I so neurotic?

  7. I got accepted to do an MFA in Directing at Columbia but with no funding. Anyone have suggestions for private arts scholarships and grants?
  8. The process has been exhausting. Every school wanted something else. I had 3 interviews and have one this weekend. Waiting to hear if I've made it to the final round of interviews which has been the most painful experience. I just want to know so I can plan the next few years of my life. Decisions should be soon but I keep seeing other people hearing about other programs and I wish they were me!!!!! Good luck!
  9. I have heard very little on this board about the MFA theatre applicant's experience. I thought I would start something. Is anyone else waiting like I am? I'd love to hear some stories or thoughts!!!
  10. I got an email yesterday from UCLA telling me how much they loved my application and my interview and also to clarify if I was International (which I am) and that I should know that out of state tuition costs would be higher and the extra costs would not be covered by Teaching Assistant prositions. I replied that I was aware and seeking alternate funding. Haven't heard back yet and am panicking that they might dismiss my application because of financial need even if they seemed to want me....
  11. I haven't started dreaming about schools in my sleep yet but I've certainly been thinking about nothing else. I've visualized getting big fat envelopes in the mail and tried to decide if I would let it sit there a moment so I could saver the experience or rip it open quickly. In either fantasy my heart is racing. Actually...in reality...my heart is racing. Every time my phone pings with a new email I jump. I eyeball the google application on my desktop every thirty seconds or so. I've pictured myself getting accepted everywhere and dealing with making a choice and I've pictured myself getting accepted nowhere and drowning my sorrows in vodka and cigarettes. I just wish these people would make up their minds already so that I could plan the rest of my year.
  12. I grew up in Montreal and did my undergrad at McGill. It's an amazing city. Cheap as dirt to live and play and also really beautiful. The campus is right in the middle of the city, bars, major shoping. Sometimes I wish I'd never left. Here is some info for you. Public transport is very easy as is hailing a cab but if you live near the university you most likely wont need it. You can walk everywhere. A lot of students live in the McGill Ghetto area or the plateau. The more east you go the more french the city becomes. Cell phone plans with data are expensive. Rogers and Telus are good. Bell is ok. That's the one draw back. Videotron is the biggest TV, Internet provider in Quebec. Be careful though because they charge you per kilobite after a certain amount of downloading/uploading. Good luck!
