  1. I was wondering if someone might offer me their assistance in accessing the Japan Times archive. This is a relatively new archive (found here) that only a small number of American universities have purchased access to. Please PM me if you feel generous enough to offer me your library account -- if, of course, your library is one of the few who has subscribed (Yale, Princeton, University of Iowa all seem to have). A shot in the dark, I know. Worth a short nonetheless! Thanks
  2. One thing I never really understood - that is 41 institution wide, right? Does that mean everyone is ranked within the institution on a single 'list.' I always thought that the departments themselves doled them out ... Anyone got any clues? ex: A PoliSci applicant is offered and declines. Does someone waitlisted in EngLit move up one or does a waitlisted PoliSci application move ...?
  3. How did you get this info? In the past they told me that they would not release that info - I am interested to know who I should ask.
  4. Thank you for your reply. I will be working under supervision of an historian at Kobe University and my research will bring me to Kobe more than a few times. I am looking to avoid university housing at all costs - I have lived in Japan and attending university there before. Dorms and such are not for me anymore. Might I ask what you and @matsukoDELUXE are researching? I am in the field of Canadian diplomatic history. Presently writing my MA thesis to be completed and defended before my departure for Japan in October. Congrats again to the both of you. Should there be some overlap in our fields (or continued communication between us), we could meet up somewhere for a drink in Tokyo, Osaka, etc. Have either of you lived in Japan before? Taken the JLPT? This forum has so few discussions of living, studying, applying for Japanese programmes, etc that I am resisting asking a million questions for the risk of totally derailing this thread. Sorry about that. Edit: @kyjin, I've actually read more than a few posts on that blog before! It's a good one. Cheers
  5. Hey guys, congrats on your awards and placements! Just wanted to interject here to ask about housing. I am also moving to Japan this year for research (on the MEXT scholarship offered by the JP government) and am going to be renting an apartment. Were either of your offered dorm rooms at all? At this point in our respective academic careers (and lives) dorms can be undesirable .... We aren't partying undergrads anymore, right? haha Anyway, considering our circumstances (Student visa, monthly stipend) and desires to rent apartments I thought we might be able to share some info. Cheers guys and congrats again -- to the rest who are still waiting it out, best of luck to you all. As someone else said above, even if you are rejected the experience of putting together your application makes it worthwhile either way!
  6. They usually come up for review in the last few weeks of March (the website reflects that) and then are announced early April. During that time rejections happen for their various reasons: GPA, etc. There is already a thread here about this year's award:
  7. Gregory Colon Semenza's "Graduate Study for the Twenty-First Century: How to Build an Academic Career in the Humanities" should probably be required reading for anyone applying for graduate school.
  8. I applied in history - in my second year rn so just for the institution I am enrolled at. We've still got a long wait! haha
  9. I've received the scholarship and will be going to Kobe University in October 2016!
  10. Last 24 hours - how are they coming?
  11. I think you're right about the memberships section. Thanks. We are likely to have huge sections left unfilled - but don't worry, they don't appear blank on your finalised CV. (The sections just don't appear at all!) Good luck
  12. On the Canadian Commons CV, where would my membership to my department's student union academic committee be best situated? Can't seem to find a good spot for it ... Hope everyone is getting their apps together!
  13. Glad to hear it all worked out - also, love your username!
  14. I am not planning to begin a PhD straight-away and thus will shoot for this November's deadline and one term of the award from May. Thanks so much for this info! Extremely helpful.
  15. Hey guys, congrats to everyone who got a SSHRC this time around. Quick question popped into my head today - thought I might ask here. My school (department) front loads 4 semesters of full time status and dues into their "2-year" Thesis MA. Essentially we are full-time for four consecutive semesters, including summers. I was admitted in January and will be finishing/defending a the end of August or early September 2016 (end of a fifth semester, if counting in the way described above). Does this mean I am ineligible to apply this fall for a SSHRC. My thinking would be that if awarded I would be able to receive a portion of it, until I finish the programme by submitting and defending my Thesis. I suppose I am looking for advise from someone who finished an MA somewhat early whilst recieving a SSHRC (or partial SSHRC) during that final year. Any insight into this is appreciated - I am also of course talking to admin and financial awards peoples at school but many are taking their much deserved holidays,
  16. Any updates? I have submitted for the MEXT in the hopes of getting funding for research following the Aug/Sept 2016 completion of my History MA in Canada. This would allow me both language and research training (expanding my thesis with Japanese perspectives/sources) before I apply for PhD programmes. If this doesn't work out, I would like to do the 10-month programme at IUC or something similar to both improve my Japanese in an immersive/professional classroom setting, and improve my PhD application more generally. I have experience taking Japanese classes, in Japanese, at a Japanese university for three semesters in the past and know it to be an environment I accel in. Anyway, this thread has been immeasurably helpful as I consider applying for the IUC 10month programme (either next year, as a backup, or during a PhD - which I will almost definitely do). Questions: did anyone here apply through the Nippon Foundation Fellows Program? @jetting - Please let us know about the funding, and what replies you might have received via email from IUC after voicing your concern about funding. The IUC website is reassuring, stating "Admission to the IUC is based entirely on the student's academic qualifications and professional goals and is entirely independent of financial considerations, so no student should hesitate to apply to the Center because of concern over costs." I like this, but am of course curious as to what this means for real applicants such as yourself. Goodluck on your endeavours - I am sure that living in Japan will be rewarding for you (though maybe how you expect it to be - that is part of the experience, though, isn't it? ) I know that I wouldn't trade my near-20 months living in Kyushu from 2010 for anything in the world - in fact, much of my time since returning and pursuing higher studies in history has been spent finding another way to live there for an extended period.
  17. This remains the only thread about this scholarship. I applied yesterday. Anyone have any experiences with it?
  18. Yes and she told me herself that she cannot give that information. What a drag.
  19. Wish Concordia would tell us - I'd like to know if I'm 29th or not (or: should I keep the research portal open in a tab until January 2016, haha)
