  1. We are the Math. We will add your biological and intellectual distinctiveness to our own. Your research will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
  2. Ask them about funding. If they pressure you for an immediate answer then tell them you're expecting other offers and want to consider all options. If they don't understand then I flat out wouldn't attend.
  3. I posted this over at mathematicsgre.com, but I figured I'd post it here too. I'm thinking about getting a barback job during grad school. Just a one night/wk sort of thing. I know I won't have a ton of money to go have fun so I thought working in a bar for one night/wk would be a good way to kinda sorta go out at night, make some money, and get free drinks. Also, I might be able to learn enough to pick up a shift or two as a bartender after a semester or two. Thoughts?
  4. Ha. I hear Fisher, Pearson, and Blackwell wrote that guy a letter of recommendation.
  5. I just received an email directing me to the website. I was accepted.
  6. Did they inform you via website or did you get an email?
  7. Didn't apply for the PhD, but I'm curious: what are you research interests? I'm dying to know what areas they're picking PhD students up in.
  8. Heard they're sending out letters this week. Looks like they're not doing email interviews this time around.
  9. I applied there as well. I've spoken one guy who went there is now at a top 15 program. He also got into MANY better places rankwise, but went there for fit and personal reasons.
  10. I just got rejected by phone from the MA stats program at Harvard. My base stats (which are also available at the mathematicsgre.com site): Undergrad Institution: Top 25 Private University(US News) Major(s): Finance & Accounting Minor(s): Mathematics GPA: 3.51 (3.87 Last 2 Years) Type of Student: DWM Grad Institution: Top 70 Math (US News) Concentration: MS in Pure Math GPA: 3.97 GRE General Test (Retake): Q\V\W: 167 (95%)\162 (90%)\4.0 (48%) GRE Subject Test in Mathematics (Retake and the ONLY score sent): 840 (89%)
  11. Anyone know if the Harvard stat MS admit is real?
  12. Should have been more specific. I'm curious about the math admit.
  13. Anyone know research area the CMU acceptance is for?
  14. I know one guy who had similar stats and the fact that his LOR writer was a rockstar statistician got him in everywhere he applied. I wouldn't be surprised if, for you, it ultimately depends on the quality of your recs and who writes them. I wish you the best of luck!
  15. Hi statapplicant. There were essentially two problems with my application: my GPA and my lack of stat coursework. I'd taken the undergrad mathematical statistics sequence during college, but that wasn't enough. I learned from some private research that I did have good to very good recs.
  16. Indeed. I applied for Fall 2012 and for Fall 2010 when I first finished my MS. My profile for 2012 is here: http://www.mathematicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=685 I didn't apply to that many places in Fall 2010.
  17. For what it's worth, I can tell you that my undergrad GPA (3.5) in unrelated classes from a top 25 school did negatively affect my application. I hope you have a better go of it than I did!
  18. I'm going to conditionally second DMX w.r.t to NCSU. I'm work in big data and analytics and I work with a LOT of the hiring companies for that particular MS program. Your profile says you're in India. If this is true then I can't help. If you're in the states and already working in IT then I'd say you're probably already a fit at most any company on the hiring list for 2013. Most of the people at MOST of those firms do not have MS's. If you wanted to go to any of the companies on that list then you're better off just staying in the professional world. You'll save a lot of money in tuition and make a lot of money over the time you're not in the program. Feel free to PM me if you want to know more about some of the firms on their hiring list.
  19. Are you asking us to help you steal a seat from someone who actually wants to get a PhD?
  20. On a very few schools I can and do write about 2). My problem is with 1). I know that I want to do math finance, but I don't know the current research enough to be specific without possibly sounding like a fool. Many departments do mathematical finance, but my ability to talk stops about alignment stops at about, "You guys do math finance and I want to do math finance."
  21. So what does everyone say in the school specific paragraph/section of their SoP? How much do they write?
  22. On their website they write the following: "All application materials should be received in the Department by January 15, 2013 to be assured priority consideration. If we receive applications before this date applicants will be eligible for an early interview decision." I'm confused by this. Do they interview? Can you interview and get a decision early?
