  1. Results survey? As those posted on this website's result board? I haven't found searching the results very informative for the programs/schools for which I'm applying
  2. ^^ do you know if that is strictly clinical at Minnesota or for other areas as well? Also, when should I expect to start hearing back? Half my applications were due on Dec. 1st and the other half on Dec. 15th. One other consideration is that I am applying to mostly quant. programs with a few social programs as well.
  3. I was wondering what is the protocol for updating grad programs on my fall quarter grades? Although the application deadline has passed, is there a way I can go about getting the program or poi to consider grades I just received? The only reason I ask is that my classes that I took this fall are COMPLETELY relevant to the subfield I'm pursuing, and I happened to get a 4.0 in some advanced classes and a graduate class. Any advice would be appreciated.
  4. Would love to know the answer to this as well.
  5. My initial email was to purely find out if he was taking graduate students. If not, I would rather save my money and not apply. Any additional correspondence just happens to be a bonus.
  6. I was emailing a prof. to see if he was taking a grad student next fall. He sent me a very detailed reply asking for my vita etc. I returned his email and then the response back was very detailed info about the program and how it might be a good place for me to research my interests. I thought this email was above and beyond the call of an email to see if he was simply taking a student. Am I reading too much into this in terms of my chances of admittance? Was it simply being polite and trying to get applicants even though it is a very competitive program?
  7. Just an update on how emailing profs has gone for me. I have emailed 7 prospective profs at programs I'm interested in and it's been only 24 hours and I've already received 4 responses: One sent me a really detailed message on what she's working on and offered to exchange articles that she's interested in. One thanked me for my inquiry but stated that they weren't sure if they would be excepting grad students because they were the newly announced department chair One very briefly stated that they would be accepting grad students The last one said they would be accepting grad students and would be looking for my application (they know my undergraduate advisor So overall it has been fairly successful I think. One note; I did follow the introduce yourself, state your interest in working with them, ask if they were taking grad students formula described in a post earlier in this thread.
  8. I've found that a couple of PhD. programs in Canada have faculty members that are doing research very compatible with my own interests. Does anybody know how programs are seen at schools like UBC, McGill, or York University are seen in comparison to their American counterparts? Will not having a degree from a US institution be a barrier to finding work in academia within the U.S.? As always, any insight is much appreciated. -S
  9. My quant background is just okay. I've taken a semester of calc. and going to be finishing the sequence this fall, I've take all the stats classes (3) offered at my undergrad (SPSS,SAS, Minitab), taken some grad level analysis/design of applied research, a course on regression for social sciences. I've also done things like tutored for stats classes. So although I'm not a math major, I think my quantitative background and lack of research specifically within quantitative psychology will be my biggest obstacles for admission. I do have other research that involved some more advanced stats. I'm really hoping that I can get into one of the eight or so programs that I've identified as good fits. I'll also apply to masters programs but I would really prefer to enter a PhD. program right out of undergrad.
  10. Unfortunately for me, I'm not a math major and my undergraduate school has neither a grad program or any quantitative faculty. Hope I'm not at too much of a disadvantage. If you or your close friend is willing to give out any tips for a prospective quant. psych. student then please PM me. As you can tell through this post and others, I'm going through this process in the dark.
  11. I've been asked that many times. I'm interested in stats/math/research methods and in particular several different methods in quantitative psychology. Just because I haven't contributed original research in the field of hierarchical linear models doesn't mean that I don't know that I want to study quantitative psychology in graduate school. I think that the skills necessary to do research in quantitative psychology is a barrier for most if not all undergraduate students.
  12. I have pretty good stats and some research experience, but obviously, it wasn't quantitative related research experience. I can't imagine having completed quantitative research experience as an undergrad. but since there is so little information on these programs, I really have no idea.
  13. Hello all, I'm applying to Quantitative Psychology PhD programs for the fall of 2012. As I've been figuring out where I'm going to apply, I've had a hard time figuring out what my odds of admission are because unlike areas like Clinical, there is no data for admitted students for school's quantitative areas. This has been problematic because I know what I would like to study, but I have no idea what schools I should target or use as backups. In addition, completing a solid application is time consuming and expensive so I can't manage applying to too many programs. If anybody knows where to find data or can indicate how difficult it is to be admitted in quantitative programs (I can PM my info) or has any guidance in seeking admission to this small subfield of psychology, please let me know.
  14. Most definitely. Anyhow, any other metric of competitiveness beyond the aforementioned stats. would be of interest.
  15. I just checked and I can see the courses that I'm registered in. However, with the application deadline being in December, I won't even have my fall grades before I have to send in my transcripts. Therefore, it's still almost like an entire year won't be taken into consideration.
  16. How much consideration do admissions committees place on classes that you'll take during your senior year? Due to phd admissions deadlines falling in December, there is almost a year of coursework that won't even be on my transcript by the time I send off my apps. There are some classes that I am taking next year that will really bolster my relevant coursework and I was wondering how I could get those courses taken into consideration.
  17. From your knowledge, what are the most competitive fields in terms of admissions in psychology. Other than obviously clinical psychology, in areas like social, cognitive, counseling, quantitative, etc. what are the hardest to get into?
  18. I know that Montana State, WWU, EWU and CWU offer financial support, but those are smaller schools as well.
  19. When would you consider contacting POI's. I'm torn between doing it during the summer or in early fall yet both times seem less than ideal for obvious reasons: in the summer lots of faculty are on quasi-vacation, and in the fall there is always the madness of classes starting etc. Thoughts?
  20. Applying in psych. programs this fall with a very high gpa and have Math:710 Verbal: 540. I'm considering taking a course and taking the new GRE with some serious studying. Thoughts?
  21. I agree with the above post. I know the industry prospects for quant psychologists must be good, but I want to know what the academic prospects are for quant. psychologists.
  22. Like I said in an earlier post, I'm trying to distinguish between the differences in opportunities and job prospects between quant. programs in psychology and educational psychology programs. On the APA task force page they have comprehensive lists of both types of programs but don't really offer any guidance on which program is appropriate for distinct job paths. Unfortunately, the field is small enough that most of my professors have confessed that they don't have a clue about the differences in the programs. I'm trying to decide which type of program to apply to in the fall but I have the issue of not really knowing what I want to do after grad school. I can most definitely see myself in an academic job but yet would be very open to an industry job if the right topic and job came along. Again, if anyone has an idea on which program would be the best all around degree for primary academics and yet also industry, please feel free to share.
  23. I'm interesting in pursuing quantitative psychology and I know these type of programs are housed in both regular psychology programs and in educational psychology programs. What are the differences in employment opportunities from these different programs. Are quantitative psychologists in demand regardless of the department they come from?

  25. Can someone in these programs speak to the difference between masters and doctoral degrees in statistics if you have a career industry in mind. I know that some programs are more applied like NCSU and VA tech, but is the doctoral degree really worth the extra time or is there greater opportunities/compensation?
