  1. Look at placement.
  2. This is America. You don't need a co-signer for a federal student loan. Also, I suggest your son research the process himself, unless you're going to be paying his student loan debt.
  3. Look at placement.
  4. Political science programs love taking risks on people who struggles the first time around. Good luck.
  5. Many history departments are full of people who went to low-ranked programs. You can succeed, but you have to bust your tail while in grad school, as you can't coast on departmental prestige.
  6. You're good at trolling, especially if you think a 3.45 is a good grad school GPA. That's not good enough to keep funding at a lot of unranked programs.
  7. Keep in mind your topic will probably change down the line, which faculty expect.
  8. Just don't flunk out of grad school.
  9. What's the DGS supposed to do? Passing courses is a requirement to get a degree. If I were another student, I'd be a bit ticked someone else was allowed to graduate despite not passing muster.
  10. What type of journal are you looking at if you're posting here for advice? Not wanting to be too mean, but most master's students do not have the methodological skills to publish in any decent journal, especially if you are using qualitative methods.
  11. What's Andrei Markovits' advice on where to go?
  12. What is the attraction of going to grad school if you had trouble as an undergrad? It doesn't get easier.
  13. Depends on whether you signed anything. Also, was the program cut? You should have known about this beforehand due to union rules regarding notice.
  14. If writing worries you, then this program probably isn't for you.
  15. It's quaint kittythrones believes she'll have the income needed to homeschool or send her kids to school in France.
  16. Complete your master's first, and then focus on teaching.
  17. The discussions and pictures may be great, but does that help you land a job?
  18. You could get a job with the U.N., but don't bank on it, unless you can be an unpaid intern.
  19. It's more competitive than you think. A master's just isn't good-enough to get a full-time teaching position in the U.S. at a community college. You need several years of being an adjunct to get the minimum teaching experience. Getting into a Ph.D. program is more realistic than getting a teaching job at this point.
  20. What type of grades did you get in BC? You'll need to do better than a B average in graduate school.
  21. Ask how many students without funding get funding. It's not very common to grant funding after one year, as they can already see you're willing to pay.
  22. You just realized tenure lines are disappearing?
