Well in your situation it will look poor because you asked for the alternate, and are now switching not because you originally had a conflict, but because now you do have a conflict with a new school. They might realize this, but they might be okay with changing it up as long as all the spots in that original interview date aren't filled. Either way, trying to change it at this point won't harm you as much as it may make the admins handling the stuff a bit more busy.

An update about Stanford Biosciences: I called up to the main office and they said that most departments are finalizing their reviews this week so if you don't get anything this week from your department, it's not unlikely that they will send out invites next week, too.

I think an hour away is far enough to justify a hotel. In not needing flights, you are already saving the school money anyways. Considering that interview days can start at 8am and there might be traffic driving to the campus, I think it's in your best interest to just stay at the hotel and save yourself some stress in the morning. 
For what it's worth - I live in SF and for my upcoming UC Berkeley interview I asked to stay in the hotel, which they had no problem with.

I'd be lying if I said I'm going to stay off this forum for a full 24 hours..

For UCLA I think it depends on which home program you applied to. For me, I did the MCIP program and their program admin said that interview invites would go out in late January and the interview date would be late Feb. While I know that people who applied to the Gene Regulation home program have gotten interview invites already.

Well that's great because now all my February is booked up and I thought Rockefeller would be first week of March. So whether I get the interview now or not is a meh.
 
Feel free to ask for Skype interviews. I've had plenty that allowed that. Only a few schools said they only do interviews during the days they said they do. And ain't nobody got time for that. Programs thinking they're so special that they can't go out of their way for potential grad students. You can only imagine how far out of the way they'll go for you while you are in the program.

haha you will be.  By the end of the interview time I just wanted to be home and done with it all for a few weeks.  It isn't terrible it just becomes getting home in time to get a few things settled and go into work (or school) before bouncing off again.  Didn't get a ton of time to see friends during the time since most of my weekends were spent out of town.

Also this 'waiting for interview phone calls' process has made me immensely more annoyed at telemarketers and phone surveys....

Just got Johns Hopkins Cellular and Molecular Medicine interview invite! 

Just my first interview invite (email) from Baylor College of Medicine (Houston)!! Was a total shock!! I didn't think invites would go out on the weekend let alone in the evening! Sooo excited!!!

The interview invite I got via phone followed up with a more detailed email. I'm pretty sure all programs will send an email since you still need to coordinate flights and interview dates with them, which is harder to do over the phone. 

I wrote a fairly detailed blog post in January 2014 that might be helpful, and @fuzzylogician gave some good additions in the comments. If something is not covered there, let me know and I will add it and comment it on here.
