  1. My intention is to go into industry after masters. So far I've been accepted to UMich's Applied Master's in Stats program and UTD (Univ. of Texas Dallas) master's in statistics program. (The other programs I am waiting on are UCLA Stats (assuming waitlist/reject), UMass Amherst, Cornell MPS, and Waterloo), but they will boil down to the course or thesis/project decision). I did not receive funding for UMich. I'm using this as some baseline for things I'm looking to get out of the program. I am under the impression that Michigan is "higher ranked" (but it is hard to compare due to difference in program), so in terms of networking, I think that would be better (but correct me if I am wrong). If anyone knows more about these schools, I would appreciate your input.
  2. I got an acceptance to UTD's masters program, but they didn't specify a deadline for me to confirm attendance. Anyone else know when the date is? I just want to check here before emailing the department.
  3. I would like to find some schools with a lower gpa requirement. Any that are at the top of your head? I haven't taken stats or real analysis, and I just took one semester of abstract algebra, so that is why I am trying to focus more on applied stats programs. I guess I am concerned about living in a non-diverse area (I am asian, and I thought that was not considered a minority applicant). Maybe I have not looked into schools that have a higher diversity percentage in the midwest.
  4. All right, thank you for the feedback. It makes sense. I won't report it.
  5. I originally intended to go to a physics program so I took the physics gre, but now I'm applying to statistics programs. My score was in like the 45 percentile, so it would probably hurt anyway, yet it would be a good benefit to have the test score to be of good use. Has anyone else encountered a similar situation?
  6. Manhattan: 160Q 154V Official Paper 1: 164Q 155V Official Paper 2: 164Q 157V Princeton Review: 163Q 152V 3.5AWA PowerPrep 1: 166Q 150V PowerPrep 2: 166Q 157V Actual Exam: 162Q 156V The math on the actual exam was a little more tricky in the 2nd section than I practiced, the first instance I ran out of time on a math section (I don't know nerves or just actually harder). It felt the closer to the manhattan free practice. I used barrons verbal to practice and vocab flash cards starting in July. Maybe I am not good at studying, but I'm glad to not bomb the verbal portion.
  7. I'm a US domestic student (non-minority) with a BS in math and physics and GPA's 3.11 and 3.35 respectively. I took my GRE today: 162Q/156V/Pending AWA. I think this is a sufficient score (160+ Q is fine, right?) I have some basic research skills from a physics lab working with MATLAB. Nothing published and minimal conclusions unfortunately. I got A's in multivariable calc, linear algebra, and an introductory data analysis class (matlab). I feel "unqualified" that I got a C in probability, but I believe I can do much better if I were to take it again. Do I need to explain this bad grade? I read that a lot for writing graduate school apps. My tentative list of schools (from what I recall, they're applied stats programs): Oregon State, Rutgers, Stony Brook, U Texas Dallas, U Minnesota, WashU, UCLA, UMass Amherst, WPI, U Waterloo (Canada). I looked into schools that offered some kind of aid. Are there too many reaches? Generally speaking, I don't want to apply to schools in the south or midwest (barring the exceptions I listed above, but if anyone has suggestions in adjacent states, that can be helpful too).
  8. I only recently made the decision to apply to MS statistics programs, but it is too late for starting this fall. Does spring usually not get financial aid?
  9. I took a practice test, and noticed there were a lot more questions on statistics/data analysis as compared to the SAT. How much data/analysis and statistics is usually on there? I skimmed the official gre guide. They have one equation talking about principal interest. Do I need to memorize this formula?
