Just declined Wisconsin, Arizona, and UNC.
-
Same thing happened to me today. (I wonder if it's the same school?) congratulations
-
Off the wait list and officially accepted at UNC!
-
Thanks! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed...
-
Hey Jac, do you think you could let it be known when the two UNC officially decline?
-
Just out of curiosity, are you planning on visiting UNC before declining?

I'm here to vent about myself. I'm so irrational. I applied to these four big schools with knowledge that the odds I'd get in were slim to none. I don't have a masters, and I'm competing against people with masters. I come from a piece of shit undergrad because it's all I could afford, and I'm competing against people with amazing pedigrees. All this evidence allowed me to conclude that I should not get my hopes up about these four schools. And this worked, for the most part. I am not upset about my presumed rejection from Yale, and I won't be upset about my impending rejections from Stanford and Princeton. But for some some irrational reason, I got my hopes up for MIT. How do I know this happened? Because as the acceptances come up on the results page, I'm getting upset. And then I get more upset for getting upset. And I'm pissed at myself because I have a great offer from Duke, and there are other people who are worse off than I am because they haven't heard any good news. So I'm upset at myself for not appreciating what I have. Waiting for the phone call from MIT is like waiting for my much more popular high school crush to text me back. It's never going to happen, and I NEED to get this through my thick skull.

A funny for those still waiting for some good news...

I think there needs to be more coordination. I say we plan a group chant starting at 3:33am.

I've also been considering this scenario: What if after 5-6 years of PhD study, I no longer want to be in academia? I think I might have a shot of getting into UNC, so I'm comparing UNC to Duke. UNC is ranked higher than Duke, but the name recognition from Duke might help me in the future if I try to find a job outside of teaching philosophy.

I emailed and asked UA. They said that although they would love for me to come and visit, I would have to pay out of pocket because they do not have the funds. UNC is offering to pay for my travel expenses, and I will get to stay with a current grad student. I kind of wanted to tell UA that UNC is at least covering the cost of travel, but I think that might be inappropriate.

I'm a determinist, and this offends me.

Wait listed at UNC! I'm "very high" on the list so they're offering to pay for a visit along with those who have been accepted!!
-
Congrats! Was it a personalized email?
-
How are you all staying productive while you wait?

Graham Priest is visiting my university. Yesterday I saw him give a talk on dialetheism, and then I got to go to dinner with him and my philosophy department. For a moment I almost forgot about this website -
I've been accepted by both a PhD and a MA program. I'm choosing to go the PhD route. I've made this decision because I know I really want to get a PhD, and I'm afraid that if I did choose the MA route, there's a chance I might not get in anywhere in two years. I'm also from a small undergraduate program, so I might have to work to catch up in some areas, and I'm mentally preparing myself for that challenge.

Was it a personalized email? And congrats!!!
-
I decided I'm going to start emailing the MA programs I applied to and withdraw my applications. Thanks for all the advice everybody!
-
I'm in the same situation with my MA apps. I talked to my letter writers about it. Two of them told me to withdraw my apps and one told me not to. So I still have no idea whether I should or not.

And the stars, don't forget the stars. Two acceptances up now...
-
Well then they must have started with the middle of the alphabet because my last name starts with a letter near the beginning of the alphabet.

When I saw you quoted me I got really excited for you for a second. There is still time though, and I will continue to repeat that in my head until the end of today.

Anybody want to claim the UCSD acceptance?
