  1. I'm actually just starting the program this year, and I don't have to serve as a TA until next year.
  2. And moreover, this is what I was told by the institution: "Taxes are not deducted from stipend checks, unless you're an international student; there may be fees. You will be responsible for filing the appropriate tax form at the end of the year."
  3. To clarify: I will be receiving a stipend in addition to a tuition exemption. No outside sources. However, I will be living in NYC, so for obvious reasons I would prefer to budget for taxes now rather than later.
  4. Are stipends subject to federal, state, or FICA taxes?
  5. Is it true that one generally needs to wait until about a month before (intended move-in date) to rent an apartment in New York?

what's the best place to live for Columbia students/stipends? Morningside Heights? Is it a safe neighborhood?
  7. haha yeah that was I. I guess the waiting list theory makes sense: I personally thought they were being facetious and/or passive aggressive about my emailing them. I'm also on the waiting list at Columbia and San Diego but I don't think I'm waiting for any of them. Good luck to you though.
  8. Hey mobicat, I was actually waitlisted for the Ph.D. program! I already have full funding for another school and was planning on going there...very confused now.

Umm it depends on what you're able to afford. if you can afford to not live in newark, then you may be happier living elsewhere (not so much because of safety but more in terms of quality of life). a lot of people in their 20s/30s live in Hoboken and commute to Manhattan to save money, but I'm not sure how much money they actually save because Hoboken is really up and coming. That being said, you could also find an apartment in other nearby towns in North Jersey and commute to Newark for school (with a car or without--Amtrak and NJ Transit both stop in Newark, and there are also buses I'm sure) while still having the benefits of the city (New York) for a culturally-enriching social life. Having grown up in North Jersey, I can vouch for the public transportation into the city from the suburbs as being top-notch.
  10. yay!!!! congrats, mobicat. do you know if/when they send out rejections?

it's much safer than it used to be, but some places are still safer than others. you're really fine in general, but in terms of getting a cultural social experience, i would recommend spending your free time in the city (new york) and hoboken.
  12. ditto, except re. NYU's MCC (MA) program. Do you think they will release decisions in a time frame that works with the April 15th deadline in case applicants applied to PhD programs at other schools?
  13. what's the music scene like in madison?
  14. Did anyone apply to the Columbia School of Journalism (Ph.D.) and/or hear back?
  15. Has anyone applied to Columbia's ph.d. program and/or heard back from them?
  16. How on earth are you supposed to have secured housing by February if enrollment decisions aren't technically made until April 15th? Is Willy St. the coffee shop/music area?
  17. Has anyone heard anything from Northwestern yet or know when they're planning on releasing decisions?
  18. Wow, congratulations. You must be so excited--good luck with your work in the fall!
  19. Does the Rhetoric and Composition program intersect at all with the Rhetoric PhD (within Communication Arts) at UW-Madison?
