  1. No. MFA is fine. If you want to teach theory, read theory, write theory, publish it, then design a course from start to finish. It's very hard work for very little pay. If you do two masters, make sure they're both fully-funded.
  2. NO TO UNDERGRAD - she has an edge being from another discipline, believe it or not. Make work for a few months. Have a professional photographer take pictures of it. Portfolio - yes. that's all in the application requirements, the specifications are all different and quite rigorous. Those programs are prestigious and may take a few attempts applying to get into. Northwestern or Berkeley are the only on that list with prestige in art. That said, if she can get fully funded anywhere, apply to all. Critical theory - yes, you do need that in a good MFA program, but it's not everything. You need to be able to write about your work (does she have work to write about?) What does she want to do with her art? If she just wants to paint, why go to school? This is the attitude or premise to assume. There has to be a reason she wants to pursue the discipline.
  3. Art Center has a lot of contact with professors, they have to write a long thesis and have it approved before getting their diploma. Studios are large, for the most part. Reputation is great in L.A. I think you should decide if you want to make 100 contacts in New York or Los Angeles. And look at the faculty you'll be studying with!!!
  4. Hey- I wanted to drop out after the first crit at my less-than MFA program, I stuck it out like a chump and owe big. BUT - I'm teaching now - A LOT. And I still believe and I'm sure Jerry Saltz would agree - your success as an artist has to do with the work!!!
  5. Apply to all of them, you're not going to get in to them all on the first try.
  6. I know someone who did SS and THEN got an MFA in the U.S. and she's doing very well (but not teaching.)
  7. Whitney ISP accepts people who do the plastic arts. A written Masters Thesis will not disqualify you from getting into an MFA program. Just remember, 750 people apply to those programs per year and 7 get in, that's less than 1% chance. I think the previous experience elsewhere makes you a better candidate. You might want to open up your scope of schools. Hunter CUNY is legit. Also there's Bard's program only during the summers.
  8. Brand noob here... I'm interested in getting a PsyD beacuse I don't want to do research, I want to work with individuals, families, groups and businesses. I read some stuff online that said PsyD's are looked at as not being "real" degrees in Psychology. Is that baloney? Is there any benefit to having a doctorate versus a masters?(I don't know why not just MFT, a Doctorate sounds better but does it pay better too?) Are any of PsyD programs funded? Where's a good place to start looking for those programs? I don't even know where to begin. I'd like to do art therapy or individual counseling or trauma work/rape recovery but I already have an MFA, (useless and cost 120K). I can't afford to take out any more loans! Thanks~
  9. What are some "good ones" in terms of PsyD schools? Is it hard to get a job in the counseling field with that degree?
